Numerical simulation of viscous vortex rings

    Get PDF
Vortex interactions and their role in turbulent flow are examined. The objectives are twofold. First, to use the existing axisymmetric code to study the annihilation process of colliding vortex rings and determine the relevance of this problem to similar 3-D phenomena. The second objective is to extend the code to three dimensions. The code under development is unique in that it can compute flows in a truly infinite domain (i.e., without periodic boundary conditions or approximations from truncating the domain). Because of this, the far field sound can be computed, and therefore, contribute to improved models of turbulence generated noise for this class of flows. Issues which can be addressed by the code include: effects of viscosity on mode selection in azimuthal breakdown of vortex rings (i.e., the Widnall instability); reconnection, the associated production of small scales, and the time scale of the process

    Have You Met Me?

If, being human, I am supposed to know myself better than anyone else knows me, I realize that I am a stranger in my midst because I\u27ve never met me yet. Although I have heard much about me (too much) and my talents (not monetary, however) , our paths have never crossed. It is just as well, I suppose, as I find it difficult to go in one direction anyway without complicating the issue by having to meet me coming too

A comparative study of brief and time-unlimited marital therapists

    Get PDF
This was a descriptive study of 140 volunteer therapists in the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area who identified themselves as either brief or time-unlimited in their practice of marital therapy. The sample, predominantly female and highly educated, had a mean age of 46.9 years.;For the purpose of this study, brief marital therapy was defined as eight or fewer therapeutic sessions within a 3-month period, and time-unlimited marital therapy was designated as therapy lasting longer than eight sessions or over 3 months. There were 60 self-identified brief marital therapists (BMTs) and 73 self-identified time-unlimited marital therapists (TUMTs). Subjects completed four instruments, including the style questionnaire, the active-directiveness subscale, and two instruments developed by the researcher. The specific variables under consideration were active-directiveness of the therapist, therapeutic goals, and duration of treatment.;Results revealed a high degree of similarity between BMTs and TUMTs regarding theoretical orientation, style, interventions, aim of therapy, and length and scheduling of sessions. Despite their similarities, therapists endorsed items consistent with their identification as either a BMT or TUMT. Thus BMTs, compared to TUMTs, were more active-directive, employed more limited, modest goals, and utilized fewer sessions. Therefore, it was concluded from the present findings that there was a significant difference between BMTs and TUMTs on the variables under scrutiny

Teaching Comprehension by Incorporating Story Grammar into a DRTA Lesson Format

    Get PDF
This project presents a teaching procedure which should improve primarylevel reading comprehension. This procedure combines a framework of story grammar as a guide for implementing the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) lesson format. Literature is reviewed which illustrates the effectiveness of story grammar when used to teach comprehension, and describes the effectiveness of DRTA to promote active comprehension. By combining both story grammar and DRTA, a procedure is developed and ten example lessons are produced

The Influence of Habitat Variation on the Morphology and Physiology of Plethodon Wehrlei (Fowler and Dunn) in West Virginia

    Get PDF
High elevation, low elevation and cave populations of Plethodon wehrlei (Fowler and Dunn) in West Virginia were compared to determine the influence of habitat variation on morphology and physiology. Discriminant analysis of 14 external morphological characters and 11 skeletal characters revealed a similar morphology for the three populations. Comparisons of critical thermal maxima showed a positive correlation to habitat temperature. Dehydration studies revealed that the high elevation population was more resistant and tolerant to water loss than the cave and low elevation populations

The application of student development theory in multicultural programming

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to examine the application of student development theory in multicultural programming. Part I takes a look at the theoretical models of Hoopes (1979) and Katz (1984). Bridges (1980, 1988) offered insight into ideas from the corporate world which may apply directly to related issues in higher education. Part II looks at the application of theory from first an administrative and then a student affairs approach. Combined, both approaches prove valuable for the institution as a whole to utilize effective models and implement multicultural programming. Part Ill offers implications and advances the discussion of issues, theories and models
