The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich temperature of the intracluster medium
The relativistic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect offers a method, independent
of X-ray, for measuring the temperature of the intracluster medium (ICM) in the
hottest systems. Here, using N-body/hydrodynamic simulations of three galaxy
clusters, we compare the two quantities for a non-radiative ICM, and for one
that is subject both to radiative cooling and strong energy feedback from
galaxies. Our study has yielded two interesting results. Firstly, in all cases,
the SZ temperature is hotter than the X-ray temperature and is within ten per
cent of the virial temperature of the cluster. Secondly, the mean SZ
temperature is less affected by cooling and feedback than the X-ray
temperature. Both these results can be explained by the SZ temperature being
less sensitive to the distribution of cool gas associated with cluster
substructure. A comparison of the SZ and X-ray temperatures (measured for a
sample of hot clusters) would therefore yield interesting constraints on the
thermodynamic structure of the intracluster gas.Comment: This version accepted for publication in MNRAS following minor

Quantum state transfer in spin chains with q-deformed interaction terms
We study the time evolution of a single spin excitation state in certain
linear spin chains, as a model for quantum communication. Some years ago it was
discovered that when the spin chain data (the nearest neighbour interaction
strengths and the magnetic field strengths) are related to the Jacobi matrix
entries of Krawtchouk polynomials or dual Hahn polynomials, so-called perfect
state transfer takes place. The extension of these ideas to other types of
discrete orthogonal polynomials did not lead to new models with perfect state
transfer, but did allow more insight in the general computation of the
correlation function. In the present paper, we extend the study to discrete
orthogonal polynomials of q-hypergeometric type. A remarkable result is a new
analytic model where perfect state transfer is achieved: this is when the spin
chain data are related to the Jacobi matrix of q-Krawtchouk polynomials. The
other cases studied here (affine q-Krawtchouk polynomials, quantum q-Krawtchouk
polynomials, dual q-Krawtchouk polynomials, q-Hahn polynomials, dual q-Hahn
polynomials and q-Racah polynomials) do not give rise to models with perfect
state transfer. However, the computation of the correlation function itself is
quite interesting, leading to advanced q-series manipulations
The N-Terminus of Apolipoprotein A-V Adopts a Helix-Bundle Molecular Architecture
Previous studies of recombinant full-length human apolipoprotein A-V (apoA-V) provided evidence of the presence of two independently folded structural domains. Computer-assisted sequence analysis and limited proteolysis studies identified an N-terminal fragment as a candidate for one of the domains. C-Terminal truncation variants in this size range, apoA-V(1-146) and apoA-V(1-169), were expressed in Escherichia coli and isolated. Unlike full-length apoA-V or apoA-V(1-169), apoA-V(1-146) was soluble in neutral-pH buffer in the absence of lipid. Sedimentation equilibrium analysis yielded a weight-average molecular weight of 18811, indicating apoA-V(1-146) exists as a monomer in solution. Guanidine HCl denaturation experiments at pH 3.0 yielded a one-step native to unfolded transition that corresponds directly with the more stable component of the two-stage denaturation profile exhibited by full-length apoA-V. On the other hand, denaturation experiments conducted at pH 7.0 revealed a less stable structure. In a manner similar to that of known helix bundle apolipoproteins, apoA-V(1-146) induced a relatively small enhancement in 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid fluorescence intensity. Quenching studies with single-Trp apoA-V(1-146) variants revealed that a unique site predicted to reside on the nonpolar face of an amphipathic R-helix was protected from quenching by KI. Taken together, the data suggest the 146 N-terminal residues of human apoA-V adopt a helix bundle molecular architecture in the absence of lipid and, thus, likely exist as an independently folded structural domain within the context of the intact protein
A Magnetic Resonance Realization of Decoherence-Free Quantum Computation
We report the realization, using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, of
the first quantum computer that reliably executes an algorithm in the presence
of strong decoherence. The computer is based on a quantum error avoidance code
that protects against a class of multiple-qubit errors. The code stores two
decoherence-free logical qubits in four noisy physical qubits. The computer
successfully executes Grover's search algorithm in the presence of arbitrarily
strong engineered decoherence. A control computer with no decoherence

Pilot scale pyrolysis - determination of critical moisture content for sustainable organic waste pyrolysis
Economic feasibility of large scale organic waste pyrolysis was investigated for Inghams Enterprise (Waitoa) chicken dissolved air flotation sludge (DAF) and activated sludge (biosolids) from the Hamilton municipal waste water treatment plant. Processing data was obtained from pilot plant trials using the Lakeland Steel (Rotorua) continuous auger pyrolysis plant using feedstock at 15, 30, 45 and ~80% moisture contents. Economics were calculated based on estimated capital and operating costs of a large scale facility, revenue from selling char, savings from landfill diversion (including transportation and gate costs), energy savings by recycling syngas product and using waste heat for drying feedstock.
For DAF, 15% moisture content gave yields of 21% syngas, 27% char, and 52% oil (dry weight basis). 15% moisture content gave the best processing conditions based on handling properties and degree of autogenesis. The DAF case does not give a payback period due to low scale of operations.
For biosolids, 15% moisture content feedstock gave yields of 46% syngas, 31% char, and 21% oil (wet weight). Difficulties were found with plant blockages at 45% and 80% moisture contents. 15% moisture content gave the best processing conditions and the best economic performance with a payback time of 4.6 years for a facility that could process 11,000 tonnes per year
'She's like a daughter to me': insights into care, work and kinship from rural Russia
This article draws on ethnographic research into a state-funded homecare service in rural Russia. The article discusses intersections between care, work and kinship in the relationships between homecare workers and their elderly wards and explores the ways in which references to kinship, as a means of authenticating paid care and explaining its emotional content, reinforce public and private oppositions while doing little to relieve the tensions and conflicts of care work. The discussion brings together detailed empirical insights into local ideologies and practices as a way of generating new theoretical perspectives, which will be of relevance beyond the particular context of study

The time evolution of a single spin state is determined, and this time evolution is illustrated by means of an animation. These special spin chain data can be linked to the Jacobi matrix entries of Krawtchouk polynomials or dual Hahn polynomials. We discuss here the case related to Krawtchouk polynomials, and illustrate the possibility of perfect state transfer by an animation showing the time evolution of the spin chain from an initial single spin state. Very recently, these ideas were extended to discrete orthogonal polynomials of q-hypergeometric type. Here, a remarkable result is a new analytic model where perfect state transfer is achieved: this is when the spin chain data are related to the Jacobi matrix of q-Krawtchouk polynomials. UV Imaging Polarimetry of the Seyfert 2 Galaxy Mrk 3
We present UV imaging polarimetry data of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 taken by
the Hubble Space Telescope. The polarized flux is found to be extended to ~1
kpc from the nucleus, and the position angles of polarization are
centrosymmetric, confirming that the polarization is caused by scattering. We
determine the location of the hidden nucleus as the center of this
centrosymmetric pattern. From the polarization images taken in two broad bands,
we have obtained the color distribution of the polarized flux. Some regions
have blue polarized flux, consistent with optically-thin dust scattering, but
some bright knots have a color similar to that of Seyfert 1 nucleus. Also, the
recent Chandra X-ray observation suggests that the ratio of scattered UV flux
to scattered X-ray flux is rather similar to the intrinsic UV/X-ray ratio in a
Seyfert 1 nucleus, if the observed extended X-ray continuum is scattered light.
While the scattered X-ray would be essentially from electron scattering, the UV
slope and UV/X-ray ratio both being similar to Seyfert 1's would lead to two
possibilities as to the nature of the UV scatterers. One is that the UV may
also be scattered by electrons, in which case the scattering gas is somehow
dust-free. The other is that the UV is scattered by dust grains, but the
wavelength-independent UV scattering with low efficiency indicated by the UV
slope and UV/X-ray ratio would suggest that the grains reside in UV-opaque
clouds, or the dust might be mainly composed of large grains and lacks
