This thesis examines the impact of the security and privacy challenges of mobile applications on software engineering paradigms. As mobile apps become central to daily activities, they increase the potential for data breaches and privacy concerns, especially with the rise of services offered through these apps and the use of REST APIs. This work identifies key issues in mobile application ecosystems, such as securing communication channels, protecting data from unauthorized access, and ensuring proper governance over sensitive information shared with third parties. To address these challenges, the thesis proposes leveraging privacy-enhancing technologies, including Trusted Execution Environments (TEE) and Blockchain technology, to secure data transactions and processing. It presents novel methods for analyzing user behavior and detecting anomalies without compromising personal identity, aiming to enhance security and privacy in mobile applications. Key contributions include developing a secure communication channel between mobile apps and TEEs, detecting interests and anomalies in app usage, and conceptualizing a privacy-preserving decentralized super app to improve data governance and privacy. The research underscores the importance of maintaining high security standards in the face of increasing app complexity and user reliance on digital services, offering innovative solutions to enhance privacy and security in the mobile app ecosystem

The appearance of mobile technologies created opportunities for remote applications running in devices such as smartphones. In some of these applications it is essential that authentication have to be performed in a secure and e!cient way. In this sense the use of NFC (Near Field Communication) technology came to provide safety to transactions executed through mobile applications. This kind of application is rather attractive to perform electronic commerce, as well as access control for sensitive data, such as banking accounts. In this work it is presented two protocols for user authentication through NFC tags, using asymmetric cryptography by elliptic curves. Throughout the text we present the main concepts about NFC, cryptography and the web services REST (Representational State Transfer), which is used as the building framework for the prototypes of the Protecting Touch protocols presented here. Details about the protocols implementation are also presented, as well as results from the evaluation experiments of these protocols

Towards Privacy Preserving Data Centric Super App

    No full text
The number of smartphone users recently surpassed the numbers of desktop users on Internet, and opened up countless development challenges and business opportunities. Not only the fact that the majority of users are connected using their smartphones, but the number of Internet users in general has popularized the massive use of data-driven applications. In this context, the concept of super apps seems to be the next game-changer for the mobile apps industry, and the challenges related to security and privacy are key aspects for keeping user data safe. Thus, by combining different components for provisioning, authentication, membership and others, we propose a novel framework that enables the creation of a super app using privacy by design principles

The current challenge for several applications is to guarantee the user’s privacy when using personal data. The broader problem is to transfer and process the data without exposing the sensitive content to anyone, including the service provider(s). In this paper, we address this challenge by proposing a protocol to combine secure frameworks in order to exchange and process sensitive data, i.e. respecting user’s privacy. Our contribution is a protocol to perform a secure exchange of data between a mobile application and a trusted execution environment. In our experiments we show independent implementations of our protocol using three different encryption modes (i.e., CBC, ECB, GCM encryption). Our results support the feasibility and importance of an end-to-end secure channel protocol

Mobile applications became the main interaction channel in several domains, such as banking. Consequently, understanding user behaviour on those apps has drawn attention in order to extract business-oriented outcomes. By combining Markov Chain and graph theory techniques, we successfully developed a process to model the app, to extract the click high utility events, to score the interest on those events and cluster the groups of interest. We tested our approach on an European bank dataset with over 3.5 millions of user's session. By implementing our approach, analysts can gain knowledge of user behaviour in terms of events that are important to the domain

Introduction and aimsThe intensive cropping system and imbalance use of chemical fertilizers to pursue high grain production and feed the fast-growing global population has disturbed agricultural sustainability and nutritional security. Understanding micronutrient fertilizer management especially zinc (Zn) through foliar application is a crucial agronomic approach that could improve agronomic biofortification of staple grain crops. The use of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPBs) is considered as one of the sustainable and safe strategies that could improve nutrient acquisition and uptake in edible tissues of wheat to combat Zn malnutrition and hidden hunger in humans. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the best-performing PGPB inoculants in combination with nano-Zn foliar application on the growth, grain yield, and concentration of Zn in shoots and grains, Zn use efficiencies, and estimated Zn intake under wheat cultivation in the tropical savannah of Brazil.MethodsThe treatments consisted of four PGPB inoculations (without inoculation, Azospirillum brasilense, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas fluorescens, applied by seeds) and five Zn doses (0, 0.75, 1.5, 3, and 6 kg ha−1, applied from nano ZnO in two splits by leaf).ResultsInoculation of B. subtilis and P. fluorescens in combination with 1.5 kg ha−1 foliar nano-Zn fertilization increased the concentration of Zn, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the shoot and grain of wheat in the 2019 and 2020 cropping seasons. Shoot dry matter was increased by 5.3% and 5.4% with the inoculation of P. fluorescens, which was statistically not different from the treatments with inoculation of B. subtilis as compared to control. The grain yield of wheat was increased with increasing nano-Zn foliar application up to 5 kg Zn ha−1 with the inoculation of A. brasilense in 2019, and foliar nano-Zn up to a dose of 1.5 kg ha−1 along with the inoculation of P. fluorescens in the 2020 cropping season. The zinc partitioning index was increased with increasing nano Zn application up to 3 kg ha−1 along with the inoculation of P. fluorescens. Zinc use efficiency and applied Zn recovery were improved at low doses of nano-Zn application in combination with the inoculation of A. brasilense, B. subtilis, and P. fluorescens, respectively, as compared to control.DiscussionTherefore, inoculation with B. subtilis and P. fluorescens along with foliar nano-Zn application is considered a sustainable and environmentally safe strategy to increase nutrition, growth, productivity, and Zn biofortification of wheat in tropical savannah
