Electrochemical reaction engineering of polymer electrolyte fuel cell
Although fuel cells can be considered as a type of reactor, methods of kinetic analysis and reactor modeling from the viewpoint of chemical reaction engineering have not yet been established. The rate of an electrochemical reaction is a function of concentration, temperature, and interfacial potential difference (or electromotive force). This study examined the cathode reaction in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell, in which oxygen and protons react over platinum in the catalyst layer (CL). The effects of the oxygen partial pressure and the cathode electromotive force on the reaction rate were assessed. Resistance to proton transport increases the electromotive force and reducing the reaction rate. It was established that the effectiveness factor of the cathode CL is determined by competition between the reaction and mass transport of oxygen and protons. Two dimensionless moduli that govern the cathode behavior are proposed as a means of depicting the processes in the cell
Determining North Atlantic meridional transport variability from pressure on the western boundary: a model investigation.
In this paper we investigate the possibility of determining North
Atlantic meridional transport variability using pressure on the western boundary, focusing on the 42degN latitude of the Halifax WAVE array. We start by
reviewing the theoretical foundations of this approach. Next we present results from a model analysis, both statistical and dynamic, that demonstrate
the feasibility of the approach. We consider how well we can quantify the meridional transport variability at 42degN given complete knowledge of bottom pressure across the basin, and to what degree this quantification is degraded by first ignoring the effect of intervening topography, and then by using only bottom pressure on the western boundary. We find that for periods of greater
than one year we can recover more than 90% of the variability of the main
overturning cell at 42degN using only the western boundary pressure, provided
we remove the depth-average boundary pressure signal. This signal arises from
a basin mode of bottom pressure variability, which has power at all timescales,
but that does not in truth have a meridional transport signal associated with
it, and from the geostrophic depth-independent compensation of the Ekman
transport. An additional benefit of the removal of the depth-average pressure is that this high-frequency Ekman signal, which is essentially noise as
far as monitoring the MOC for climatically important changes is concerned,
is clearly separated from other modes
Understanding Malicious Behavior in Crowdsourcing Platforms: The Case of Online Surveys.
Crowdsourcing is increasingly being used as a means to tackle problems requiring human intelligence. With the ever-growing worker base that aims to complete microtasks on crowdsourcing platforms in exchange for financial gains, there is a need for stringent mechanisms to prevent exploitation of deployed tasks. Quality control mechanisms need to accommodate a diverse pool of workers, exhibiting a wide range of behavior. A pivotal step towards fraud-proof task design is understanding the behavioral patterns of microtask workers. In this paper, we analyze the prevalent malicious activity on crowdsourcing platforms and study the behavior exhibited by trustworthy and untrustworthy workers, particularly on crowdsourced surveys. Based on our analysis of the typical malicious activity, we define and identify different types of workers in the crowd, propose a method to measure malicious activity, and finally present guidelines for the efficient design of crowdsourced surveys
Isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonance in the even-A ^{112-124}Sn isotopes and the asymmetry term in nuclear incompressibility
The strength distributions of the giant monopole resonance (GMR) have been
measured in the even-A Sn isotopes (A=112--124) with inelastic scattering of
400-MeV particles in the angular range
--. We find that the experimentally-observed GMR energies
of the Sn isotopes are lower than the values predicted by theoretical
calculations that reproduce the GMR energies in Pb and Zr very
well. From the GMR data, a value of MeV is obtained
for the asymmetry-term in the nuclear incompressibility.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters. 10 pages; 4 figure
Uncomputably noisy ergodic limits
V'yugin has shown that there are a computable shift-invariant measure on
Cantor space and a simple function f such that there is no computable bound on
the rate of convergence of the ergodic averages A_n f. Here it is shown that in
fact one can construct an example with the property that there is no computable
bound on the complexity of the limit; that is, there is no computable bound on
how complex a simple function needs to be to approximate the limit to within a
given epsilon
Bradyzoite pseudokinase 1 is crucial for efficient oral infectivity of the Toxoplasma gondii tissue cyst.
The tissue cyst formed by the bradyzoite stage of Toxoplasma gondii is essential for persistent infection of the host and oral transmission. Bradyzoite pseudokinase 1 (BPK1) is a component of the cyst wall, but nothing has previously been known about its function. Here, we show that immunoprecipitation of BPK1 from in vitro bradyzoite cultures, 4 days postinfection, identifies at least four associating proteins: MAG1, MCP4, GRA8, and GRA9. To determine the role of BPK1, a strain of Toxoplasma was generated with the bpk1 locus deleted. This BPK1 knockout strain (Δbpk1) was investigated in vitro and in vivo. No defect was found in terms of in vitro cyst formation and no difference in pathogenesis or cyst burden 4 weeks postinfection (wpi) was detected after intraperitoneal (i.p.) infection with Δbpk1 tachyzoites, although the Δbpk1 cysts were significantly smaller than parental or BPK1-complemented strains at 8 wpi. Pepsin-acid treatment of 4 wpi in vivo cysts revealed that Δbpk1 parasites are significantly more sensitive to this treatment than the parental and complemented strains. Consistent with this, 4 wpi Δbpk1 cysts showed reduced ability to cause oral infection compared to the parental and complemented strains. Together, these data reveal that BPK1 plays a crucial role in the in vivo development and infectivity of Toxoplasma cysts
On the extraction of weak transition strengths via the (3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV
Differential cross sections for transitions of known weak strength were
measured with the (3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV on targets of 12C, 13C, 18O,
26Mg, 58Ni, 60Ni, 90Zr, 118Sn, 120Sn and 208Pb. Using this data, it is shown
the proportionalities between strengths and cross sections for this probe
follow simple trends as a function of mass number. These trends can be used to
confidently determine Gamow-Teller strength distributions in nuclei for which
the proportionality cannot be calibrated via beta-decay strengths. Although
theoretical calculations in distorted-wave Born approximation overestimate the
data, they allow one to understand the main experimental features and to
predict deviations from the simple trends observed in some of the transitions.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Highly-Sensitive Thin Film THz Detector Based on Edge Metal-Semiconductor-Metal Junction
Terahertz (THz) detectors have been extensively studied for various applications such as security, wireless communication, and medical imaging. In case of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) tunnel junction THz detector, a small junction area is desirable because the detector response time can be shortened by reducing it. An edge metal-semiconductor-metal (EMSM) junction has been developed with a small junction area controlled precisely by the thicknesses of metal and semiconductor films. The voltage response of the EMSM THz detector shows the clear dependence on the polarization angle of incident THz wave and the responsivity is found to be very high (similar to 2,169 V/W) at 0.4 THz without any antenna and signal amplifier. The EMSM junction structure can be a new and efficient way of fabricating the nonlinear device THz detector with high cut-off frequency relying on extremely small junction area
