In this research, faculty members and technical engineers from Tokyo University of Agriculture have conducted a trial environmental education program in cooperation with the teachers of the Seijo Kindergarten utilizing vegetable and fruit cultivation related educational research. Specifically, the objectives besides holding the actual educational event was to clarify the purpose of the educational program and to select the education materials for future use. As part of the environmental education program, children learned about the uses and effects of the plants Sevia, Lemongrass and Bassia Scoparia using their five senses. In addition, children were able to learn about the different cultivation methods and varieties of everyday vegetables and fruits that they encounter on a daily basis such as grapes, blueberries and cherry tomatoes. As a result of the program children were evidently able to improve their observation skills and comprehension skills by taking notes of their new discoveries, joys and impressions of everyday vegetables, while they learned about the wide varieties of vegetables and fruits of the Isehara Farmland and their cultivation methods. Meanwhile, as for the provision of the Isehara Farmland as a sustainable venue of environmental education, the establishment of an acceptance system and the securing of human resources remain as potential issues
Development and Practice of Introductory Teaching Materials for Science "Problem- Based Learning" on the Theme of "Removal of Roadside Utility Poles"
Predictors and preventers of postoperative bedridden status in the elderly ages over 75 after emergency general surgery: a retrospective cohort study
Aim We investigated the proportion of bedridden patients after emergency surgery among the elderly ages over 75; defined as the latter‐stage elderly in Japan, the associated factors, and interventions used to prevent it. Methods Eighty‐two latter‐stage elderly patients who underwent emergency surgery for non‐traumatic illness between January 2020 and June 2021 in our hospital were included in the study. Backgrounds and various perioperative factors were compared retrospectively between the groups including patients who became bedridden from Performance Status Scale 0 to 3 before admission (Bedridden group) and those who did not (Keep group). Results Three cases of death and seven patients who were bedridden before admission were excluded. The 72 remaining patients were divided into the Bedridden group (n = 10, 13.9%) and the Keep group (n = 62, 86.1%). There were significant differences in the prevalence of dementia, pre‐ and postoperative circulatory dynamics, renal dysfunction, coagulation abnormality, length of stay in the high care unit/intensive care unit, and number of hospital days, with a relative risk of 13 (1.74–96.71), a sensitivity of 1.00, and a specificity of 0.67 for a preoperative shock index of 0.7 or higher being associated with the Bedridden group. Among patients with a preoperative shock index of 0.7 or higher, there was a significant difference in SI at 24 h postoperatively between the two groups. Conclusion Preoperative shock index may be the most sensitive predictor. Early circulatory stabilization seems to be protective against patients becoming bedridden
Whole-Genome Sequence of Fluoroquinolone-Resistant Escherichia coli HUE1, Isolated in Hokkaido, Japan
We report the complete genome sequence of Escherichia coli strain HUE1, isolated from the urinary catheter of a female patient, showing fluoroquinolone resistance without quinolone resistance-determining region mutations. To facilitate the exploration of the molecular characteristics of HUE1, the whole genome was sequenced using long- and short-read platforms
Probucol attenuates hyperoxia-induced lung injury in mice
<div><p>Hyperoxic lung injury is pathologically characterized by alveolar edema, interlobular septal edema, hyaline membrane disease, lung inflammation, and alveolar hemorrhage. Although the precise mechanism by which hyperoxia causes lung injury is not well defined, oxidative stress, epithelial cell death, and proinflammatory cytokines are thought to be involved. Probucol—a commercially available drug for treating hypercholesterolemia—has been suggested to have antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects. This study aimed to assess whether probucol could attenuate hyperoxic lung injury in mice. Mice were exposed to 95% O2 for 72 h, with or without pre-treatment with 130 μg/kg probucol intratracheally. Probucol treatment significantly decreased both the number of inflammatory cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and the degree of lung injury in hyperoxia-exposed mice. Probucol treatment reduced the number of cells positive for 8-hydroxyl-2′-deoxyguanosine or terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) and suppressed NF-κB activation, Bax expression, and caspase-9 activation in lung tissues from hyperoxia-exposed mice. These results suggest that probucol can reduce oxidative DNA damage, apoptotic cell death, and inflammation in lung tissues. Intratracheal administration of probucol may be a novel treatment for lung diseases induced by oxidative stress, such as hyperoxic lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome.</p></div
