    The authors of this paper consider recent developments involving terrorist use of the internet and cyberspace for a range of purposes, as well as renewed concerns relating to potential terrorist attacks against critical infrastructure and their control systems. Following from an overview of recent trends, they discuss public and private efforts to respond to existing and emerging threats. The authors anchor these within the context of current efforts to manage a range of interrelated cyber security challenges, focusing predominantly on the international and regional response, as well as efforts by industry actors to deal with terrorist use of their products and services

    Examining memory for ritualized gesture in complex causal sequences

    Abstract: Humans have created and maintained an exponentially large and sophisticated behavioral corpus over evolutionary time. In no small part this was achieved due to our tendency to imitate behaviours rather than to emulate outcomes. This tendency, however, can lead to inefficiency and redundancy in our behavioral repertoires. Drawing on evidence from multiple fields of psychology, we propose two novel competing hypotheses. The ‘catalyst hypothesis’ suggests that low (but not high) proportions of ritualized gesture in instrumental action sequences will improve subsequent recall of the entire action sequence (without itself enhancing the instrumental utility of the sequence). Conversely, the ‘cost hypothesis’ suggests that increasing proportions of ritualized gesture will impair recall, due to the introduction of cognitive load. The null hypothesis states that ritualized gestures are neither beneficial nor costly. In a pre‐registered experiment, we presented participants with multiple versions of two complicated 2‐minute action sequences in which we varied the proportion of ritualized gesture. We then quantified the influence ritualized gesture had on recall for individuals gestures, overall outcomes, and described detail. We found clear evidence that high proportions of ritualized gestures impair recall for individual gestures and overall success, and weak evidence that low proportions increase overall success. At present, we may reject the null, but cannot rule out either of our competing hypotheses. We discuss potential implications for cultural evolution, and generate competing predictions that allow for adjudication between Ritual Modes theory (Whitehouse, 2004) and the ‘Cognitive Resource Depletion’ account of Religious Interaction (Schjoedt et al., 2013).     Relationship of hypoxia to metastatic ability in rodent tumours

    The relationship between tumour oxygenation in vivo and metastatic potential was investigated in 2 rodent tumour models, KHT-C fibrosarcoma and SCC-VII squamous cell carcinoma. The oxygen status in these rodent tumours transplanted intramuscularly in syngeneic mice was measured using the Eppendorf pO 2 Histograph. The results indicate a considerable heterogeneity in oxygenation between individual tumours within each tumour cell line. At different tumour sizes, animals were killed and lung lobes were examined for macroscopic and microscopic lung metastases. In the KHT-C tumours, a significant increase in early pulmonary metastasis formation was observed in mice with hypoxic primary tumours. Hypoxic SCC-VII tumours did not give rise to enhanced lung metastasis formation despite oxygenation in a range similar to the KHT-C tumours. However, the overall metastasis incidence in the SCC-VII model was very low. The results obtained in the KHT-C model, which show that hypoxic tumours are more likely to metastasize, are in agreement with recent clinical data suggesting that a hypoxic environment might be implicated in metastatic ability of human tumours. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

    Gravitational Spin-Orbit Coupling through Third-Subleading Post-Newtonian Order: From First-Order Self-Force to Arbitrary Mass Ratios

    Exploiting simple yet remarkable properties of relativistic gravitational scattering, we use first-order self-force (linear-in-mass-ratio) results to obtain arbitrary-mass-ratio results for the complete third-subleading post-Newtonian (4.5PN) corrections to the spin-orbit sector of spinning-binary conservative dynamics, for generic (bound or unbound) orbits and spin orientations. We thereby improve important ingredients of models of gravitational waves from spinning binaries, and we demonstrate the improvement in accuracy by comparing against aligned-spin numerical simulations of binary black holes

    National counter-terrorism (C-T) policies and challenges to human rights and civil liberties: Case study of United Kingdom

    In the UK the rise post-2005 in “home-grown” terrorism, relying to a significant extent on strikes on soft targets by “self-starters,” means that the search for effective preventive measures remains a continuing concern. Below a number of the preventive counter-terror measures adopted post-9/11, and incrementally strengthened in response to the current threat, are found to fall into three categories and represent interventions at the stages in the path toward attacks. This chapter focuses on selected examples of these preventive measures. In terms of three key stages, firstly, there is the attempt to prevent radicalization, under the “Prevent” strategy. A second strategy relies on taking certain measures to control the activities of those considered likely – on the balance of probabilities – to engage in terrorist-related activity. A third preventive strategy relies on the special terrorism offences under the Terrorism Acts 2000 and 2006, as amended, intended to allow for intervention at a very early stage in terrorist plots and in preparing or instigating terrorist acts (“precursor” offences)

    Defections from European social-democratic parties and a resurgence of union militancy have prompted some to diagnose a new left-wing trade unionism across Europe. This comment on the article by Connolly and Darlington scrutinizes trends in France and Germany but primarily analyses recent developments in Britain. While there are some instances of disaffiliation from the Labour Party, support for electoral alternatives, growth in political militancy and emphasis on new forms of internationalism, these have been limited. There is insufficient evidence to suggest that we are witnessing the making of a new radical collectivism

    Inspecting spectra with sound: proof-of-concept & extension to datacubes

    We present a novel approach to inspecting galaxy spectra using sound, via their direct audio representation ('spectral audification'). We discuss the potential of this as a complement to (or stand-in for) visual approaches. We surveyed 58 respondents who use the audio representation alone to rate 30 optical galaxy spectra with strong emission lines. Across three tests, each focusing on different quantities measured from the spectra (signal-to-noise ratio, emission-line width, & flux ratios), we find that user ratings are well correlated with measured quantities. This demonstrates that physical information can be independently gleaned from listening to spectral audifications. We note the importance of context when rating these sonifications, where the order examples are heard can influence responses. Finally, we adapt the method used in this promising pilot study to spectral datacubes. We suggest that audification allows efficient exploration of complex, spatially-resolved spectral data.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in RASTI.     Reduction of low- and high-grade cervical abnormalities associated with high uptake of the HPV bivalent vaccine in Scotland

    In Scotland, a national HPV immunisation programme began in 2008 for 12-13 year olds, with a catch-up campaign from 2008-2011 for those under the age of 18. To monitor the impact of HPV immunisation on cervical disease at the population level, a programme of national surveillance was established.  We analysed colposcopy data from a cohort of women born between 1988-1992 who entered the Scottish Cervical Screening Programme (SCSP) and were aged 20-21 in 2008-2012.  By linking datasets from the SCSP and colposcopy services, we observed a significant reduction in diagnoses of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 1 (CIN 1) (RR 0.71, 95% CI 0.58 to 0.87, p=0.0008), CIN 2 (RR 0.5, 95% CI 0.4, 0.63, p<0.0001) and CIN 3 (RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.58, p< 0.0001) for women who received 3 doses of vaccine compared with unvaccinated women.  To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies to show a reduction of low and high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia associated with high uptake of the HPV bivalent vaccine at the population level. These data are very encouraging for countries that have achieved high HPV vaccine uptake
