Get PDF
Granulomas are susceptible to infrequent finding in bone marrow biopsies and may be associated with a broad spectrum of infectious and non-infectious disorders. The incidence of bone marrow granulomas is reported in 0.3% to 3% of bone marrow biopsies with tuberculoid granulomas constituting 6% to 48% of cases. Here, we report the case of a 17-year-old boy with a history of fever (pyrexia of unknown origin). There was no organomegaly and lymphadenopathy with incidental tuberculoid granuloma on bone marrow biopsy

Presacral immature teratoma with carcinoid in a young adult male: A rare case presentation

Get PDF
Presacral region is defined as potential space delineated by the rectum anteriorly, sacrum posteriorly, peritoneal reflection superiorly, and perineal muscles inferiorly. Tumors within the presacral space are uncommon with an incidence of 1:40,000. Presacral teratomas in adults are very rare. We, herein, present a case of 39‑year‑old male who was admitted with chief complaint of per rectal bleed. A large presacral mass was present which on histopathological examination was found to be immature teratoma with neuroendocrine differentiation

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of breast - A case report

Get PDF
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is best regarded as well differentiated, primary fibrosarcoma of skin. It is an uncommon, slow growing, locally aggressive, and reoccurring but rarely metastasizing tumor of the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Clinically they present as firm solid nodules that arise most frequently on trunk and extremities. DFSP of the breast has been rarely reported. Here, we report a rare case of DFSP of the breast in 47-year-old woman

Background: Hepatitis C is an emerging infectious disease all over the world especially in the developing countries. HCV is a blood borne virus, well known risk factors include blood transfusion, injection drug abuse, chronic haemodialysis patients. HCV is a single stranded positive sense RNA virus, belongs to family flaviviridae and genus Hepacivirus. Haemodialysis patients are the high risk group due to prolonged vascular access and contaminated equipments. Methods: The present study was retrospective conducted from June 2019 to 31 July 2020 in the Department of Microbiology, Government Medical College, Amritsar. Clinical, demographic and geographical data of the renal disease patients admitted to the hospital for haemodialysis was recorded and analysed. The patients were tested for HCV by Third Generation ELISA.Results: In the present study, out of enrolled 186 patients, 12 were HCV positive (0.06%). Prevalence of Hepatitis C infection in haemodialysis patients is associated with gender distribution more in females (72%) than males (62%), preponderance of HCV infection was observed in age group 41-60 years (69%) followed by 21-40 years (23%),more rural (85%) distribution. Diabetes (19%), hypertension (25%) and chronic kidney disease (63%) were the associated comorbid conditions. Conclusions: The overall HCV sero prevalence was observed to be 0.06%, this low prevalence can be attributed to the fact that increased awareness regarding the disinfection of dialysis machines by improving the surveillance system of HCV and better education of nurses in dialysis units. HD patients should be routinely screened for HCV infection

Occult Follicular Variant of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Presenting as Scalp Metastasis: A Case Report

Get PDF
The skin metastasis of follicular variant of papillary carcinoma thyroid (FVPTC) is a rare condition and the lesions should be differentiated from primary skin tumors. The scalp is the most frequent site which is involved in skin metastasis of FVPTC. It shows the poor outcome and aggressive nature of the disease. In this report, we aim to present a case report of a 65 year –old female with scalp metastasis of FVPTC highlighting the fact that a solitary cutaneous lesion may be the first evidence of disseminated malignancy in a patient with occult papillary thyroid carcinoma

Investigation of clinical parameters associated with COVID-19 in pregnant women

Background: Pregnancy is an immune-compromised condition; encompass physiological changes that make the women more vulnerable to infections such as COVID-19. The major concern is about the intrauterine transmission resulting in fetal and neonatal outcomes; therefore, this group of population requires more attention pertaining prevention, management and treatment. Thus, the main aim of the study is to analyze clinical characteristics among pregnant women. Methods: The study was conducted on 17092 samples of pregnant adults whose nasopharyngeal and/or oropharyngeal swab samples were received from various districts of Punjab (Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran and Pathankot) from the period of March 2020 to December 2020. Confirmation of SAS-CoV-2 was done by RT-PCR.Results: Out of total samples (17092), 374 (2.19%) females exhibited positive results for SARS-CoV-2, and mean age of the pregnant females was 26.37 years. Analysis was performed on 210 (Positive) samples as cases and 210 age matched control females (SARS-CoV-2 negative). Analysis performed demonstrated that SpO2 <96% and co-morbidities such as diabetes and hypertension showed significant association and are common factors in COVID-19. None of the case showed any neonatal and maternal demise. Conclusions: In the present study, saturation level of oxygen (<96%), diabetes and hypertension was found to be significant. All the pregnant women have similar symptoms as that of non pregnant adults

Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.Social media use among students has infiltrated into dental education and offers benefits but may also cause problems. The aim of this study was to explore and compare current social media usage among dental undergraduate students from two countries—Malaysia and Finland. A self-administered structured online questionnaire was used. WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat were the services that were most familiar to the respondents from both countries. There were differences between the students from the two countries among the most preferred platforms. The most frequently used applications were WhatsApp (91.1% of students in Malaysia and 96.1% in Finland used it very frequently) and Instagram (74.3% of students in Malaysia and 70.0% in Finland used it very frequently). Students in Malaysia spent significantly more hours per week using the platforms as study tools than students in Finland. Over 80% of the Finnish dental students reported that lack of knowledge was not an issue in social media usage, while 85% of Malaysian students felt that lack of knowledge prevented them from using social media platforms frequently. The findings offer evidence that dental students used social media extensively.Peer reviewe

Background: Breast malignancies encompass various subtypes which differ in their clinical presentations, outcomes, and response to the treatment regimens. Thus, a proper histological diagnosis and a special mention of the rare histologic subtypes are required to formulate clear recommendations of their treatment protocols. Materials and Methods: This is a 1-year retrospective study highlighting the rarely encountered subtypes on the mastectomy specimens received. Results: We encountered only 11 rare cases out of the total 153 mastectomy specimens received. The rare subtypes were as follows mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (0.6%), mucinous carcinoma (0.6%), dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (0.6%), Squamous cell carcinoma (0.6%), papillary carcinoma (2.6%), medullary carcinoma (0.6%), and malignant mesenchymal tumor (1.3%). Conclusion: Our data suggest that these variants are distinct clinicopathological entities with a unique hormonal receptor status. Scant information is available on the rare breast tumor subtypes
