Orientation of particle attachment and local isotropy in diffusion limited aggregation (DLA)
We simulate 50 off-lattice DLA clusters, one million particles each. The
probability distribution of the angle of attachment of arriving particles with
respect to the local radial direction is obtained numerically. For increasing
cluster size, , the distribution crosses over extremely accurately to a
cosine, whose amplitude decreases towards zero as a power-law in . From this
viewpoint, asymptotically large DLA clusters are locally . This
contradicts previous conclusions drawn from density-density correlation
measurements [P. Meakin, and T. Viscek, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 32}, 685 (1985)]. We
present an intuitive phenomenological model random process for our numerical

Potts-Percolation-Gauss Model of a Solid
We study a statistical mechanics model of a solid. Neighboring atoms are
connected by Hookian springs. If the energy is larger than a threshold the
"spring" is more likely to fail, while if the energy is lower than the
threshold the spring is more likely to be alive. The phase diagram and
thermodynamic quantities, such as free energy, numbers of bonds and clusters,
and their fluctuations, are determined using renormalization-group and

Performance optimization for rotors in hover and axial flight
Performance optimization for rotors in hover and axial flight is a topic of continuing importance to rotorcraft designers. The aim of this Phase 1 effort has been to demonstrate that a linear optimization algorithm could be coupled to an existing influence coefficient hover performance code. This code, dubbed EHPIC (Evaluation of Hover Performance using Influence Coefficients), uses a quasi-linear wake relaxation to solve for the rotor performance. The coupling was accomplished by expanding of the matrix of linearized influence coefficients in EHPIC to accommodate design variables and deriving new coefficients for linearized equations governing perturbations in power and thrust. These coefficients formed the input to a linear optimization analysis, which used the flow tangency conditions on the blade and in the wake to impose equality constraints on the expanded system of equations; user-specified inequality contraints were also employed to bound the changes in the design. It was found that this locally linearized analysis could be invoked to predict a design change that would produce a reduction in the power required by the rotor at constant thrust. Thus, an efficient search for improved versions of the baseline design can be carried out while retaining the accuracy inherent in a free wake/lifting surface performance analysis
Develop and test fuel cell powered on site integrated total energy sysems: Phase 3: Full-scale power plant development
A 25-cell stack of the 13 inch x 23 inch cell size (about 4kW) remains on test after 8300 hours, using simulated reformate fuel. A similar stack was previously shut down after 7000 hours on load. These tests have been carried out for the purpose of assessing the durability of fuel cell stack components developed through the end of 1983. A 25kW stack containing 175 cells of the same size and utilizing a technology base representative of the 25-cell stacks has been constructed and is undergoing initial testing. A third 4kW stack is being prepared, and this stack will incorporate several new technology features
Regulation of Growth in Avena Stem Segments by Gibberellic Acid and Kinetin
Kinetin at physiological concentrations causes significant reduction of GA 3 -promoted growth in excised Avena stem segments. Kinetin is therefore considered to be a gibberellin-antagonist in this system. A Lineweaver-Burke plot reveals that kinetin acts non-competitively with GA 3 . The kinetin inhibition of GA 3 -promoted growth can be seen within 6 hours. It was found that soluble protein is markedly increased by kinetin in the tissue during the first 3 hours, thus preceding the inhibition of GA 3 -promoted growth by several hours. At the cellular level, kinetin negated the blocking effect of GA 3 on cell division in the intercalary meristem portions of these segments. Laser Doppler dust devil measurements
A scanning laser doppler velocimeter (SLDV) system was used to detect, track, and measure the velocity flow field of naturally occurring tornado-like flows (dust devils) in the atmosphere. A general description of the dust devil phenomenon is given along with a description of the test program, measurement system, and data processing techniques used to collect information on the dust devil flow field. The general meteorological conditions occurring during the test program are also described, and the information collected on two selected dust devils are discussed in detail to show the type of information which can be obtained with a SLDV system. The results from these measurements agree well with those of other investigators and illustrate the potential for the SLDV in future endeavors

Random field Ising systems on a general hierarchical lattice: Rigorous inequalities
Random Ising systems on a general hierarchical lattice with both, random
fields and random bonds, are considered. Rigorous inequalities between
eigenvalues of the Jacobian renormalization matrix at the pure fixed point are
obtained. These inequalities lead to upper bounds on the crossover exponents
