Gauge Fluxes in F-theory and Type IIB Orientifolds
We provide a detailed correspondence between G_4 gauge fluxes in F-theory
compactifications with SU(n) and SU(n)x(1) gauge symmetry and their Type IIB
orientifold limit. Based on the resolution of the relevant F-theory Tate models
we classify the factorisable G_4-fluxes and match them with the set of
universal D5-tadpole free U(1)-fluxes in Type IIB. Where available, the global
version of the universal spectral cover flux corresponds to Type IIB gauge flux
associated with a massive diagonal U(1). In U(1)-restricted Tate models extra
massless abelian fluxes exist which are associated with specific linear
combinations of Type IIB fluxes. Key to a quantitative match between F-theory
and Type IIB is a proper treatment of the conifold singularity encountered in
the Sen limit of generic F-theory models. We also shed further light on the
brane recombination process relating generic and U(1)-restricted Tate models.Comment: 53 pages, 3 figures; v2: Refs added; v3: minor corrections to match

Effects of a Single Intra-Articular Injection of a Microsphere-Formulation of Triamcinolone Acetonide on Knee Osteoarthritis Pain: A Double-Blinded, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Multinational Study
Background: Intra-articular corticosteroids relieve osteoarthritis pain, but rapid systemic absorption limits efficacy. FX006, a novel, microsphere-based, extended-release triamcinolone acetonide (TA) formulation, prolongs TA joint residence and reduces systemic exposure compared with standard TA crystalline suspension (TAcs). We assessed symptomatic benefits and safety of FX006 compared with saline-solution placebo and TAcs.
Methods: In this Phase-3, multicenter, double-blinded, 24-week study, adults â„40 years of age with knee osteoarthritis (Kellgren-Lawrence grade 2 or 3) and average-daily-pain (ADP)-intensity scores of â„5 and â€9 (0 to 10 numeric rating scale) were centrally randomized (1:1:1) to a single intra-articular injection of FX006 (32 mg), saline-solution placebo, or TAcs (40 mg). The primary end point was change from baseline to week 12 in weekly mean ADP-intensity scores for FX006 compared with saline-solution placebo. Secondary end points were area-under-effect (AUE) curves of the change in weekly mean ADP-intensity scores from baseline to week 12 for FX006 compared with saline-solution placebo, AUE curves of the change in weekly mean ADP-intensity scores from baseline to week 12 for FX006 compared with TAcs, change in weekly mean ADP-intensity scores from baseline to week 12 for FX006 compared with TAcs, and AUE curves of the change in weekly mean ADP-intensity scores from baseline to week 24 for FX006 compared with saline-solution placebo. Exploratory end points included week-12 changes in Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Quality of Life (KOOS-QOL) subscale scores for FX006 compared with saline-solution placebo and TAcs. Adverse events were elicited at each inpatient visit.
Results: The primary end point was met. Among 484 treated patients (n = 161 for FX006, n = 162 for saline-solution placebo, and n = 161 for TAcs), FX006 provided significant week-12 improvement in ADP intensity compared with that observed for saline-solution placebo (least-squares mean change from baseline: â3.12 versus â2.14; p < 0.0001) indicating âŒ50% improvement. FX006 afforded improvements over saline-solution placebo for all secondary and exploratory end points (p < 0.05). Improvements in osteoarthritis pain were not significant for FX006 compared with TAcs using the ADP-based secondary measures. Exploratory analyses of WOMAC-A, B, and C and KOOS-QOL subscales favored FX006 (p †0.05). Adverse events were generally mild, occurring at similar frequencies across treatments.
Conclusions: FX006 provided significant, clinically meaningful pain reduction compared with saline-solution placebo at week 12 (primary end point)
Decompactifications and Massless D-Branes in Hybrid Models
A method of determining the mass spectrum of BPS D-branes in any phase limit
of a gauged linear sigma model is introduced. A ring associated to monodromy is
defined and one considers K-theory to be a module over this ring. A simple but
interesting class of hybrid models with Landau-Ginzburg fibres over CPn are
analyzed using special Kaehler geometry and D-brane probes. In some cases the
hybrid limit is an infinite distance in moduli space and corresponds to a
decompactification. In other cases the hybrid limit is at a finite distance and
acquires massless D-branes. An example studied appears to correspond to a novel
theory of supergravity with an SU(2) gauge symmetry where the gauge and
gravitational couplings are necessarily tied to each other.Comment: PDF-LaTeX, 34 pages, 2 mps figure
General Neutralino NLSPs at the Early LHC
Gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) is a theoretically
well-motivated framework with rich and varied collider phenomenology. In this
paper, we study the Tevatron limits and LHC discovery potential for a wide
class of GMSB scenarios in which the next-to-lightest superpartner (NLSP) is a
promptly-decaying neutralino. These scenarios give rise to signatures involving
hard photons, 's, 's, jets and/or higgses, plus missing energy. In order
to characterize these signatures, we define a small number of minimal spectra,
in the context of General Gauge Mediation, which are parameterized by the mass
of the NLSP and the gluino. Using these minimal spectra, we determine the most
promising discovery channels for general neutralino NLSPs. We find that the
2010 dataset can already cover new ground with strong production for all NLSP
types. With the upcoming 2011-2012 dataset, we find that the LHC will also have
sensitivity to direct electroweak production of neutralino NLSPs.Comment: 26 page
Six-dimensional (1,0) effective action of F-theory via M-theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds
The six-dimensional effective action of F-theory compactified on a singular
elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefold is determined by using an M-theory
lift. The low-energy data are derived by comparing a circle reduction of a
general six-dimensional (1,0) gauged supergravity theory with the effective
action of M-theory on the resolved Calabi-Yau threefold. The derivation
includes six-dimensional tensor multiplets for which the (anti-) self-duality
constraints are imposed on the level of the five-dimensional action. The vector
sector of the reduced theory is encoded by a non-standard potential due to the
Green-Schwarz term in six dimensions. This Green-Schwarz term also contains
higher curvature couplings which are considered to establish the full map
between anomaly coefficients and geometry. F-/M-theory duality is exploited by
moving to the five-dimensional Coulomb branch after circle reduction and
integrating out massive vector multiplets and matter hypermultiplets. The
associated fermions then generate additional Chern-Simons couplings at
one-loop. Further couplings involving the graviphoton are induced by quantum
corrections due to excited Kaluza-Klein modes. On the M-theory side integrating
out massive fields corresponds to resolving the singularities of the Calabi-Yau
threefold, and yields intriguing relations between six-dimensional anomalies
and classical topology.Comment: 55 pages, v2: typos corrected, discussion of loop corrections

Recurrence in 2D Inviscid Channel Flow
I will prove a recurrence theorem which says that any () solution
to the 2D inviscid channel flow returns repeatedly to an arbitrarily small
neighborhood. Periodic boundary condition is imposed along the
stream-wise direction. The result is an extension of an early result of the
author [Li, 09] on 2D Euler equation under periodic boundary conditions along
both directions
Massive Abelian Gauge Symmetries and Fluxes in F-theory
F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold naturally describes
non-Abelian gauge symmetries through the singularity structure of the elliptic
fibration. In contrast Abelian symmetries are more difficult to study because
of their inherently global nature. We argue that in general F-theory
compactifications there are massive Abelian symmetries, such as the uplift of
the Abelian part of the U(N) gauge group on D7-branes, that arise from
non-Kahler resolutions of the dual M-theory setup. The four-dimensional
F-theory vacuum with vanishing expectation values for the gauge fields
corresponds to the Calabi-Yau limit. We propose that fluxes that are turned on
along these U(1)s are uplifted to non-harmonic four-form fluxes. We derive the
effective four-dimensional gauged supergravity resulting from F-theory
compactifications in the presence of the Abelian gauge factors including the
effects of possible fluxes on the gauging, tadpoles and matter spectrum.Comment: 49 page
F-Theory and the Mordell-Weil Group of Elliptically-Fibered Calabi-Yau Threefolds
The Mordell-Weil group of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold X
contains information about the abelian sector of the six-dimensional theory
obtained by compactifying F-theory on X. After examining features of the
abelian anomaly coefficient matrix and U(1) charge quantization conditions of
general F-theory vacua, we study Calabi-Yau threefolds with Mordell-Weil
rank-one as a first step towards understanding the features of the Mordell-Weil
group of threefolds in more detail. In particular, we generate an interesting
class of F-theory models with U(1) gauge symmetry that have matter with both
charges 1 and 2. The anomaly equations --- which relate the Neron-Tate height
of a section to intersection numbers between the section and fibral rational
curves of the manifold --- serve as an important tool in our analysis.Comment: 29 pages + appendices, 5 figures; v2: minor correction
