    Digging by Debating: Linking massive datasets to specific arguments

    We will develop and implement a multi-scale workbench, called "InterDebates", with the goal of digging into data provided by hundreds of thousands, eventually millions, of digitized books, bibliographic databases of journal articles, and comprehensive reference works written by experts. Our hypotheses are: that detailed and identifiable arguments drive many aspects of research in the sciences and the humanities; that argumentative structures can be extracted from large datasets using a mixture of automated and social computing techniques; and, that the availability of such analyses will enable innovative interdisciplinary research, and may also play a role in supporting better-informed critical debates among students and the general public. A key challenge tackled by this project is thus to uncover and represent the argumentative structure of digitized documents, allowing users to find and interpret detailed arguments in the broad semantic landscape of books and articles

    The Subjective Experience Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In Pediatric Patients

    Mild Traumatic Brain Injury is a neurologic insult that impacts a child’s functioning across domains. Risk factors include previous concussion history, force of impact, and gender. Current research regarding return to school following a brain injury suggests the need for accommodations in a number of areas of learning including changes in schedule, reduced exposure to screens and text, limitations to classroom expectations for tasks such as reading and note-taking, and modified testing. A one-size-fits-all approach to accommodations is problematic as recovery rates vary widely. Studies have also suggested that mood symptoms are comorbid with concussion recovery. Further, pediatric concussion patients who suffer from anxiety and depression symptoms while recovering may have extended recovery periods with more debilitating symptoms. Students must balance their recovery, school demands, and changes in their activities. School professionals are often uncomfortable managing students with brain injuries leading to further stress for the recovering student. This study sought to explore patient perspectives regarding returning to learning and functional activity. Participants included 124 patients, ages 10-21, seeking treatment at a regional concussion clinic. A patient recovery profile was compiled including perspectives on the level of disruption the brain injury has caused to learning, social interactions, and activities. The patients completed a survey with a 6 point Likert scale at their medical visit. The amount to which the concussion was impairing, concerns with post injury recovery, support from school, and the impact of the concussion on mood was analyzed. The impact of gender, age, and time post injury on recovery profile were also explored

    Developing environmental flow targets for benthic macroinvertebrates in large rivers using hydraulic habitat associations and taxa thresholds

    Holistic environmental flows frameworks are built on our understanding of key flow-ecology relationships that support sensitive taxa and critical ecosystem functions under different flow and water level scenarios. Most research on flow-ecology relationships has typically focused on small systems, with less known about flow as-sociations, indicator taxa, and environmental thresholds of assemblage change along hydraulic gradients of large non-wadeable rivers. We assessed benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage structure and applied Taxa Indicator Threshold ANalysis (TITAN) on biomonitoring data collected during a six-year period in the Wolastoq | Saint John River in Atlantic Canada. Flow velocity was strongly associated with the distribution and relative abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates in the river, and taxon associations reflected functional adaptations to flow. We identified 33 genus-level indicator taxa that were either positively or negatively associated with flow velocity. Weaker taxa responses were shown for the gradient in median substrate particle size where 22 negatively and positively responding taxa were identified. We predicted changes in indicator taxon abundance under different flow scenarios using a hydrodynamic model, and characterised the distribution and availability of suitable hydraulic habitat patches within a 20 km reach downstream of a large hydropower generating station. These observations set the stage for the development of ecologically-based flow targets to support holistic environmental flow management in large rivers

    Large-scale assessment of 7-11-year-olds’ cognitive and sensorimotor function within the Born in Bradford longitudinal birth cohort study

    Background: Cognitive ability and sensorimotor function are crucial aspects of children’s development, and are associated with physical and mental health outcomes and educational attainment. This paper describes cross-sectional sensorimotor and cognitive function data collected on over 15,000 children aged 7-10 years, collected as part of the Born in Bradford (BiB) longitudinal birth-cohort study. Methodological details of the large-scale data collection process are described, along with initial analyses of the data involving the relationship between cognition/sensorimotor ability and age and task difficulty, and associations between tasks. Method: Data collection was completed in 86 schools between May 2016 and July 2019. Children were tested at school, individually, using a tablet computer with a digital stylus or finger touch for input. Assessments comprised a battery of three sensorimotor tasks (Tracking, Aiming, &amp; Steering) and five cognitive tasks (three Working Memory tasks, Inhibition, and Processing Speed), which took approximately 40 minutes. Results: Performance improved with increasing age and decreasing task difficulty, for each task. Performance on all three sensorimotor tasks was correlated, as was performance on the three working memory tasks. In addition, performance on a composite working memory score correlated with performance on both inhibition and processing speed. Interestingly, within age-group variation was much larger than between age-group variation. Conclusions: The current project collected computerised measures of a range of cognitive and sensorimotor functions at 7-10 years of age in over 15,000 children. Performance varied as expected by age and task difficulty, and showed the predicted correlations between related tasks. Large within-age group variation highlights the need to consider the profile of individual children in studying cognitive and sensorimotor development. These data can be linked to the wider BiB dataset including measures of physical and mental health, biomarkers and genome-wide data, socio-demographic information, and routine data from local health and education services.</p

    Incidence of lymphogranuloma venereum increased in England during 2018-2019, after a period of decline. Our retrospective analysis of national surveillance data identified a rapid increase in diagnoses among HIV-negative men who have sex with men. These findings indicate a need for sustained surveillance and targeted public health action

    From Big Data to Argument Analysis and Automated Extraction: A Selective Study of Argument in the Philosophy of Animal Psychology from the Volumes of the Hathi Trust Collection

    The Digging by Debating (DbyD) project aimed to identify, extract, model, map and visualise philosophical arguments in very large text repositories such as the Hathi Trust. The project has: 1) developed a method for visualizing points of contact between philosophy and the sciencesÍŸ 2) used topic modeling to identify the volumes, and pages within those volumes, which are ‘rich’ in a chosen topicÍŸ 3) used a semiformal discourse analysis technique to manually identify key arguments in the selected pagesÍŸ 4) used the OVA argument mapping tool to represent and map the key identified arguments and provide a framework for comparative analysisÍŸ 5) devised and used a novel analysis framework applied to the mapped arguments covering role, content and source of propositions, and the importance, context and meaning of argumentsÍŸ 6) created a prototype tool for identifying propositions, using naive Bayes classifiers, and for identifying argument structure in chosen texts, using propositional similarityÍŸ 7) created tools to apply topic modeling to tasks of rating similarity of papers in the PhilPapers repository. The methods from 1 to 5 above, have enabled us to locate and extract the key arguments from each text. It is significant that, in applying the methods, a nonexpert with limited or no domain knowledge of philosophy has both identified the volumes of interest from a key ‘Big Data Set’ (Hathi Trust) AND identified key arguments within these texts. This provided several key insights about the nature and form of arguments in historical texts, and is a proofofconcept design for a tool that will be usable by scholars. We have further created a dataset with which to train and test prototype tools for both proposition and argument extraction. Though at an early stage, these preliminary results are promising given the complexity of the task. Specifically, we have prototyped a set of tools and methods that allow scholars to move between macroscale, global views of the distributions of philosophical themes in such repositories, and microscale analyses of the arguments appearing on specific pages in texts belonging to the repository. Our approach spans bibliographic analysis, science mapping, and LDA topic modeling conducted at Indiana University and machineassisted argument markup into Argument Interchange Format (AIF) using the OVA (Online Visualization of Argument) tool from the University of Dundee, where the latter has been used to analyse and represent arguments by the team based at the University of East London, who also performed a detailed empirical analysis of arguments in selected texts. This work has been articulated as a proof of concept tool – linked to the repository PhilPapers – designed by members linked to the University of London. This project is showing for the first time how big data text processing techniques can be combined with deep structural analysis to provide researchers and students with navigation and interaction tools for engaging with the large and rich resources provided by datasets such as the Hathi Trust and PhilPapers. Ultimately our efforts show how the computational humanities can bridge the gulf between the “big data” perspective of firstgeneration digital humanities and the close readings of text that are the “bread and butter” of more traditional scholarship in the humanities

    Cosmological parameter estimation using Very Small Array data out to l=1500

    We estimate cosmological parameters using data obtained by the Very Small Array (VSA) in its extended configuration, in conjunction with a variety of other CMB data and external priors. Within the flat Λ\LambdaCDM model, we find that the inclusion of high resolution data from the VSA modifies the limits on the cosmological parameters as compared to those suggested by WMAP alone, while still remaining compatible with their estimates. We find that Ωbh2=0.0234−0.0014+0.0012\Omega_{\rm b}h^2=0.0234^{+0.0012}_{-0.0014}, Ωdmh2=0.111−0.016+0.014\Omega_{\rm dm}h^2=0.111^{+0.014}_{-0.016}, h=0.73−0.05+0.09h=0.73^{+0.09}_{-0.05}, nS=0.97−0.03+0.06n_{\rm S}=0.97^{+0.06}_{-0.03}, 1010AS=23−3+710^{10}A_{\rm S}=23^{+7}_{-3} and τ=0.14−0.07+0.14\tau=0.14^{+0.14}_{-0.07} for WMAP and VSA when no external prior is included.On extending the model to include a running spectral index of density fluctuations, we find that the inclusion of VSA data leads to a negative running at a level of more than 95% confidence (nrun=−0.069±0.032n_{\rm run}=-0.069\pm 0.032), something which is not significantly changed by the inclusion of a stringent prior on the Hubble constant. Inclusion of prior information from the 2dF galaxy redshift survey reduces the significance of the result by constraining the value of Ωm\Omega_{\rm m}. We discuss the veracity of this result in the context of various systematic effects and also a broken spectral index model. We also constrain the fraction of neutrinos and find that fÎœ<0.087f_{\nu}< 0.087 at 95% confidence which corresponds to mÎœ<0.32eVm_\nu<0.32{\rm eV} when all neutrino masses are the equal. Finally, we consider the global best fit within a general cosmological model with 12 parameters and find consistency with other analyses available in the literature. The evidence for nrun<0n_{\rm run}<0 is only marginal within this model

    Mediators of change in cognitive behavior therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy for eating disorders: A secondary analysis of a transdiagnostic randomized controlled trial.

    OBJECTIVE: Understanding the mechanisms of action of psychological treatments is a key first step in refining and developing more effective treatments. The present study examined hypothesized mediators of change of enhanced cognitive behavior therapy (CBT-E) and interpersonal psychotherapy for eating disorders (IPT-ED). METHOD: A series of mediation studies were embedded in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing 20 weeks of CBT-E and IPT-ED in a transdiagnostic, non-underweight sample of patients with eating disorders (N = 130) consecutively referred to the service. Three hypothesized mediators of change in CBT-E (regular eating, weighing frequency, and shape checking) and the key hypothesized mediator of IPT-ED (interpersonal problem severity) were studied. RESULTS: The data supported regular eating as being a mediator of the effect of CBT-E on binge-eating frequency. The findings were inconclusive regarding the role of the other putative mediators of the effects of CBT-E; and were similarly inconclusive for interpersonal problem severity as a mediator of the effect of IPT-ED. DISCUSSION: This research highlights the potential benefits of embedding mediation studies within RCTs to better understand how treatments work. The findings supported the role of regular eating in reducing patients' binge-eating frequency. Other key hypothesized mediators of CBT-E and IPT-ED were not supported, although the data were not inconsistent with them. Key methodological issues to address in future work include the need to capture both behavioral and cognitive processes of change in CBT-E, and identifying key time points for change in IPT-ED

    Is there an association between previous infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae and gonococcal AMR? A cross-sectional analysis of national and sentinel surveillance data in England, 2015-2019.

    OBJECTIVES: Quarterly STI screening is recommended for high-risk gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in the UK, but frequent antibiotic exposure could potentially increase the risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) developing in Neisseria gonorrhoeae. We investigated whether repeat diagnosis of gonorrhoea in those attending sexual health services (SHS) was associated with reduced antimicrobial susceptibility. METHODS: Antimicrobial susceptibility data relating to the most recent gonorrhoea diagnosis for each individual included in the Gonococcal Resistance to Antimicrobials Surveillance Programme (2015-2019) were matched to their historical records in the national GUMCAD STI surveillance data set (2012-2019). The number of gonorrhoea diagnoses in the previous 3 years was calculated for each SHS attendee. Logistic regression was used to examine the associations between the number of diagnoses and reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) >0.03 mg/L), cefixime (MIC >0.06 mg/L) and azithromycin (MIC >0.25 mg/L) at the time of the latest diagnosis. RESULTS: Of 6161 individuals included in the analysis, 3913 (63.5%) were MSM, 1220 (19.8%) were heterosexual men and 814 (13.2%) were women. Among MSM, 2476 (63.3%) had 1 past gonorrhoea diagnosis, 1295 (33.1%) had 2-4, 140 (3.6%) 5-9, and 2 (0.1%) ≄10. Most women and heterosexual men (91.7%) had one past gonorrhoea diagnosis; none had more than four. Reduced ceftriaxone and cefixime susceptibility was more common among MSM with two to four gonorrhoea diagnoses (3.8% and 5.8%, respectively) compared with those with one (2.2% and 3.9%, respectively). After adjusting for potential confounding, this association remained (adjusted OR: 1.59, 95% CI 1.07 to 2.37, p=0.02; adjusted OR: 1.54, 95% CI 1.11 to 2.14, p=0.01). No evidence was found for any other associations. CONCLUSIONS: Among MSM, repeat diagnosis of gonorrhoea may be associated with reduced ceftriaxone and cefixime susceptibility. As these are last-line therapies for gonorrhoea, further research is needed to assess the impact of intensive STI screening on AMR

    Descriptive analysis of seizures and comorbidities associated with fragile X syndrome

    Background Fragile X syndrome is characterized by a myriad of physical features, behavioral features, and medical problems. Commonly found behavioral features are hyperactivity, anxiety, socialization difficulties, and ASD. There is also a higher incidence than in the general population of strabismus, otitis media, and mitral valve prolapse. In addition, one of the most common medical problems associated with FXS is an increased risk of seizures. A subset of individuals carrying the full mutation of the FMR1 gene and diagnosed with fragile X syndrome (FXS) are reported to experience seizures, mostly during the first 10 years of their life span. Methods As part of a larger project to identify genetic variants that modify the risk of seizures, we collected clinical information from 49 carriers with FXS who experienced seizures and 46 without seizures. We compared seizure type and comorbid conditions based on the source of data as well as family history of seizures. Results We found that the concordance of seizure types observed by parents and medical specialists varied by type of seizure. The most common comorbid condition among those with seizures was autism spectrum disorder (47% per medical records vs. 33% per parent report compared with 19% among those without seizures per parent report); the frequency of other comorbid conditions did not differ among groups. We found a slightly higher frequency of family members who experienced seizures among the seizure group compared with the nonseizure group. Conclusion This study confirms previously reported features of seizures in FXS, supports additional genetic factors, and highlights the importance of information sources, altogether contributing to a better understanding of seizures in FXS
