LLS: Consciousness-Raising of the Latino/Communities Diversity

    Get PDF
In Latinas/os everyday lives, their culture and their race are objectified and marginalized. Historically, this is represented in the assumption that Latin-American culture is ???Latino??? culture, when their experiences are in actuality quite different. This conflation led to the establishment of Latina/o Studies here at the University of Illinois. All our group members have been students in Latina/o Studies classes, and we have conducted interviews with people in these classes, observed these classes, and handed out surveys to try and discover the reasons behind students??? interest in Latina/o Studies classes. We also asked these students in our interviews about their experiences as Latinas/os in a predominantly white university, the stereotypes they face, and the extra challenges of being a minority student here. We have come to the conclusion that ethnographic research on the Latino Community is challenging and fruitful, although we have only begun to scratch the surface. There are so many aspects to being ???Latino??? that the array of possibilities cannot be fully determined. We have, however, discussed the challenges that Latinos face in terms of education, stereotypes as well as racisms.unpublishe

    Eye eye

The output is a creative project called ‘Eye Eye’ consisting of a series of largescale printed textile and paper works. The project was a collaboration between textile designer Slater and visual artist, Mawuena Kattah. Both artists responded to shared connections in their practices, of pattern and textiles, image making, and narrative found in family and personal iconography. Research process: Initial inquiry was undertaken at The Whitworth Wallpaper and Textile Collection. Ideas were developed using textile and print as accessible and democratic processes. Slater and Kattah questioned the nuances between artist and designer, drawing upon their shared methods and tools. Their collaborative approach to making, drawing and image development challenged the function of the studio and the factory. Research insights: The notion of collaboration was questioned in relation to the roles of artist and designer. The dichotomy of studio and commercial practice was challenged within the context of textiles. Collaboration is important in keeping work relevant and innovative whilst sustaining the longevity of the creative economy. Through the project, Slater and Kattah argue that the design industry needs to acknowledge practitioners that come through alternative routes to practice. Dissemination: The project was disseminated at the following: Exhibition: ‘Eye Eye’ - Colours May Vary, Leeds, 15-30 November 2019. Seminar: ‘PROCESS I PATTERN I PRINT I PURPOSE’ The Whitworth Study Centre, Design Manchester, 16 November 2019. Seminar: ‘Archives and Collections- Design in a Gallery Context’, The Hepworth Wakefield- 14th December 2019. Editorial: ‘Together in Print’ by Jake Kennedy, Editorial Pressing Matters Magazine, November 2019. Exhibition: Collect, Crafts Council, Somerset House, 25th February- 1st March 2020. Acquisition: V&A Textile Collection, ‘Eyes’ (Pink) and Screen-Printed Linen, November 2019, Laura Slater & Mawuena Kattah

Depression and microvascular complications predict poor goal achievement among Colombian patients with type 2 diabetes

Aims: Many patients with type 2 diabetes (DM2) in Latin American countries remain insufficiently controlled. We aimed to identify factors associated with persistent poor metabolic control in Colombian patients with DM2. Methods: Retrospective one-year follow-up cohort study of adult patients with DM2. The primary outcome was persistent poor metabolic control (PPMC): HbA1c level >8% in all measurements during follow-up. Secondary outcomes were intermittent poor metabolic control (IPMC) and good control (GC: simultaneous achievement of HbA1c, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol goals). Multiple demographic, clinical and laboratory variables were predictors in multivariable logistical models. Results: Of 399 patients included, 50 had the primary endpoint during follow-up. Older age was negatively associated with PPMC (OR 0.40, 95%CI 0.17-0.92 for extreme quartiles), even after multivariate adjustment. Depression and the presence of multiple microvascular complications were strongly associated with the secondary endpoint IPMC (multivariate OR respectively 4.2, 95%CI 1.08-16.4 for depression; 5.61, 95%CI 1.03-30.6 for microvascular complications). Being unemployed was associated with significantly less odds of achieving GC (multivariate OR 0.19, 95%CI 0.04-0.95). Conclusions: Age, depression, the presence of microvascular complications and employment status were associated with the success or failure of diabetes management. These factors were better correlates of therapeutic success than the pharmacological agent employed
