    Performance and Internal Flow of Contra-Rotating Small-Sized Cooling Fan

    International audienceHigh pressure and large flow rate small-sized cooling fans are used for servers in data centers and there is a strong demand to increase its performance because of increase of quantity of heat from servers. Therefore, high rotational speed design is conducted, and rotational speed over 10,000min-1 is employed for cooling fans of servers. Contra-rotating rotors have been adopted for some of high pressure and large flow rate cooling fans to meet the demand. The company's research and development period for the contra-rotating small-sized cooling fan is short and its internal flow condition is not clarified well. Therefore, the internal flow condition was investigated by the numerical analysis. In the present paper, fan static pressure curves of the contra-rotating small-sized cooling fan with a 40mm square casing are shown by the experimental. Furthermore, the influences of the geometrical shape and design specification of the contra-rotating small-sized cooling fan on the internal flow condition are clarified by the numerical analysis

    Serotonergic modulation of cognitive computations

    Serotonin is a neuromodulator that is implicated in awake-sleep cycle, motor behaviors, reward, motivation, and mood. Recent molecular tools for cell-type-specific activity recording and manipulation with fine temporal and spatial resolutions are providing unprecedentedly detailed data about serotonergic neuromodulation. These newly gained information show substantial differences in the signaling and effect of serotonergic neuromodulation depending on the projection targets. To find the common denominator for this diversity, we conjecture that the evolution of serotonergic neuromodulation originates from signaling the time and resource available for action, learning, and development

    Serotonergic projections to the orbitofrontal and medial prefrontal cortices differentially modulate waiting for future rewards

    Optogenetic activation of serotonergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) enhances patience when waiting for future rewards, and this effect is maximized by both high probability and high timing uncertainty of reward. Here, we explored which serotonin projection areas contribute to these effects using optogenetic axon terminal stimulation. We found that serotonin stimulation in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is nearly as effective as that in the DRN for promoting waiting, while in the nucleus accumbens, it does not promote waiting. We also found that serotonin stimulation in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) promotes waiting only when the timing of future rewards is uncertain. Our Bayesian decision model of waiting assumed that the OFC and mPFC calculate the posterior probability of reward delivery separately. These results suggest that serotonin in the mPFC affects evaluation of time committed, while serotonin in the OFC is responsible for overall valuation of delayed rewards

    Reward probability and timing uncertainty alter the effect of dorsal raphe serotonin neurons on patience

    Recent experiments have shown that optogenetic activation of serotonin neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) in mice enhances patience in waiting for future rewards. Here, we show that serotonin effect in promoting waiting is maximized by both high probability and high timing uncertainty of reward. Optogenetic activation of serotonergic neurons prolongs waiting time in no-reward trials in a task with 75% food reward probability, but not with 50 or 25% reward probabilities. Serotonin effect in promoting waiting increases when the timing of reward presentation becomes unpredictable. To coherently explain the experimental data, we propose a Bayesian decision model of waiting that assumes that serotonin neuron activation increases the prior probability or subjective confidence of reward delivery. The present data and modeling point to the possibility of a generalized role of serotonin in resolving trade-offs, not only between immediate and delayed rewards, but also between sensory evidence and subjective confidence

    An experimental study of use of absorbable plate in combination with self-setting α-tricalcium phosphate for orthognathic surgery

    金沢大学医薬保健研究域医学系Objective: The purpose of this study was to histologically and immunohistochemically evaluate bone formation using both self-setting α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP; Biopex) and absorbable plate (Super Fixsorb-MX) in rabbit cranium bone. Study design: Twelve adult male Japanese white rabbits (12-16 wk, 2.5-3.0 kg) were used. The surgical defects were made in the nasal bone of a rabbit, and Biopex was implanted in the left side and no material in the right side. Two-hole absorbable plate and 2 screws (Super Fixsorb-MX) were fixed across the defect in each side. The rabbits were killed at 1, 4, 12, and 24 weeks after surgery, and formalin-fixed specimens were embedded in acrylic resin. The specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. For immunohistochemical analysis, the specimens were treated with bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) antibodies. Finally, these were evaluated microscopically. Results: New bone formation was observed in the region of absorbable plate and nasal membrane after >4 weeks. The area of new bone with Biopex was significantly larger than that of the control side after 1, 4, and 12 weeks (P < .05). The number of BMP-2stained cells in the experimental side was significantly larger than in the control side after 4 and 12 weeks (P < .05). Conclusion: This study suggests that the use of absorbable plate (Super Fixsorb-MX) in combination with Biopex could be useful and that both of Super Fixsorb-MX and Biopex could provide adequate bone regeneration. © 2010 Mosby, Inc

    Enhanced production of nitric oxide, reactive oxygen species, and pro-inflammatory cytokines in very long chain saturated fatty acid-accumulated macrophages

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Deterioration of peroxisomal β-oxidation activity causes an accumulation of very long chain saturated fatty acids (VLCSFA) in various organs. We have recently reported that the levels of VLCSFA in the plasma and/or membranes of blood cells were significantly higher in patients with metabolic syndrome and in patients with coronary artery disease than the controls. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of VLCSFA accumulation on inflammatory and oxidative responses in VLCSFA-accumulated macrophages derived from X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) protein (ALDP)-deficient mice.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Elevated levels of VLCSFA were confirmed in macrophages from ALDP-deficient mice. The levels of nitric oxide (NO) production stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ), intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interluekin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-12p70 (IL-12p70), were significantly higher in macrophages from ALDP-deficient mice than in those from wild-type mice. The inducible NO synthase (iNOS) mRNA expression also showed an increase in macrophages from ALDP-deficient mice.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results suggested that VLCSFA accumulation in macrophages may contribute to the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases through the enhancement of inflammatory and oxidative responses.</p

    Serum Apolipoprotein M Levels are Correlated with Biomarkers of Coagulation

    Background:Apolipoprotein M (ApoM) is bound to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in plasma, and HDL has anticoagulation effects. However, the association between ApoM and biomarkers of coagulation was unclear. Therefore, we investigated relationships between ApoM and biomarkers of coagulation. Methods: Serum samples from 233 Japanese participants including with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, or healthy controls were analyzed. Serum ApoM levels were measured using Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay(ELISA). Results:Analysis of all 233 participants showed that ApoM levels were positively correlated with age (r=0.284, p<0.001), total cholesterol (TC;r=0.477, p<0.001), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C;r=0.234, p<0.001) and lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C;r=0.331, p<0.001). Higher ApoM levels were correlated with shorter activated partial thromboplastin time(APTT;r=-0.226,p=0.001) and prothrombin time(PT,%;r=0.326,p< 0.001). Separate analysis of the 115 healthy controls showed that ApoM levels were positively correlated with age, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C, and higher ApoM levels were correlated with shorter PT. Conclusion:Serum levels of ApoM may influence biomarkers of coagulation

    Changes in the lip closing force of patients with Class III malocclusion before and after orthognathic surgery

    The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in lip pressure before and after orthognathic surgery for skeletal Class III patients. The subject groups were 32 female and 31 male patients diagnosed with mandibular prognathism and/or maxillary retrognathism who underwent orthognathic surgery. Control groups consisted of 20 women and 20 men with normal occlusion without dento-alveolar deformity. Maximum and minimum lip closing force was measured with Lip De Cum ® for the control groups and subject groups preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. The difference between the pre- and postoperative values of the groups was examined statistically. The maximum lip closing force in men was significantly larger than that in women in both the preoperative Class III group (p = 0.0330) and the control group (p = 0.0097). The preoperative Class III group was significantly smaller than the control group in maximum lip closing force in both men (p < 0.0001) and women (p < 0.0001). The postoperative maximum lip closing force was significantly larger than the preoperative value in both men (p = 0.0037) and women (p = 0.0273) in the Class III group. This study suggested that the maximum lip closing force increases after orthognathic surgery in Class III patients. © 2012 International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

    Position of mandibular canal and ramus morphology before and after sagittal split ramus osteotomy

    金沢大学医薬保健研究域医学系Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in the mandibular canal and ramus morphology before and after a sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Patients and Methods: The subjects were 30 patients (60 sides) with mandibular prognathism who had undergone bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy setback surgery. The mandibular canal position and ramus morphology were measured at the 3 horizontal planes under the mandibular foramen level (level A), 1 cm lower than level A (level B), and 2 cm lower than level A (level C) preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively by computed tomography. Results: Postoperative ramus width, lateral distance, lateral marrow distance, and canal length were significantly larger than the preoperative values at the foramen, 1 cm lower, and 2 cm lower. The mandibular canal completely contacted the lateral cortex without lateral bone marrow in 6 sides (10%) in levels A and B and 4 sides (6.7%) in level C preoperatively and 6 sides (10%) in level C postoperatively. Conclusion: This study suggested that postoperative mandibular canal position was located more posteriorly and the postoperative lateral bone marrow became thicker compared with the preoperative state. ツゥ 2010 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
