    We derive a sum rule for the total quark angular momentum of a spin-one hadronic system within a gauge invariant decomposition of the hadron's spin.     Competitive Priorities and Strategic Consensus in Emerging Economies: Evidence from India

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the competitive priorities of manufacturers in India, and examine the level of agreement or strategic consensus between senior executives and manufacturing managers on manufacturing competitive priorities in light of the prevalent culture. Design/methodology/approach – Survey data collected from 156 respondents from 78 manufacturing units based on a national sample in India are used to test the hypotheses using the paired samples t‐tests and multivariate analysis of variance. Findings – A relatively high emphasis by both levels of managers on quality, compared to the other three competitive priorities, is noteworthy and consistent with the global trends. The emphasis on delivery is a close second. Differences in competitive priorities exist across managerial levels in India despite the high power distance and low individualism. Research limitations/implications – The effect of ownership as private or public company was examined and no significant differences found, but data could not be collected on the ownership structure such as wholly owned domestic firms, foreign subsidiaries, or joint ventures. and whether a firm is a supplier to a multinational company. It may also be noted that a majority of the manufacturing companies in this paper came from three industries – chemicals, fabricated metals, and electronic and electrical equipment – and, hence, the findings of the paper might have been unduly influenced by the prevalent practices in these industries. Practical implications – The paper informs global managers and firms seeking to outsource to, or invest in, India that the Indian managers place significantly high emphasis on quality and delivery, but not as much on product variety or ability to make frequent changes to product design and production volume. The managers in India need to take note of prevailing differences in managerial priorities and efforts need to be made such that the priorities are aligned and manufacturing strategy may be unified and coordinated. Originality/value – In the Indian context, this is the first study that deployed multiple respondents to understand the manufacturing competitive priorities, and also the first to examine strategic consensus in operations strategy

    Floral resources of Karnataka: a geographic perspective

    We compiled the data on the floral resources of Karnataka from diverse published sources and analysed the geographic patterns of distribution of floral diversity. Our database shows that Karnataka harbours 4758 species from 1408 genera and 178 families and accounts for about 27 per cent of the country's floral diversity. We computed the 'endemicity value' of different districts based on the number of endemic species (those restricted to a maximum of five districts) harboured by them and found that the most species-rich districts (viz. Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Mysore, Hassan, Udupi and Kodagu) were also characterized by high values of endemicity while the species-poor districts had low values of endemicity. However, the relation between the species richness and endemicity of the districts was not linear; the species richness increases abruptly at lower levels of endemicity but plateaus off later at high levels of endemicity. Based on the number of species packed into the families, all the 27 districts segregated distinctly into three clusters that geographically correspond with the three major agro-climatic zones of the state. Our analysis showed that though the districts along the Western Ghats are florally rich, those along the dry tracts also harbour certain unique elements of the flora; thus these dry zone districts appear to be as important as those along the Western Ghats in conserving the floral resources

    Persimmon fruit (Diospyros kaki L.) is a highly nutritious fruit with bestowed antioxidant properties. But due to its perishable nature, it is produced for a very shorter period of time. Preservation of fruit in the form of pulp acts as a suitable method to provide availability of the fruit throughout the year. The main objective of this investigation was to develop persimmon pulp from the cold and hot pulping method and to assess the best preservation method for storage. Among six different treatments in cold pulping method (T1 to T3 x 2), treatment T2 (10 % water) and among 18 different treatment in hot pulping method (T1 to T9 x 2), treatment T5 (10 % water + 10 minutes cooking time) using fruit with peel was selected on the basis of nutritional and sensory attributes. Further, the pulp was preserved via heat and chemical methods. Among six different treatments, T5 (Pulp + pasteurization + 1000 ppm potassium metabisulphite (KMS) in glass bottles) was found to be best in the type of pulp. This treatment was able to retain the maximum amount of ascorbic acid (13.733 and 8.043 mg/100 g), ?-carotene (173 and 86 µg/100 g) and total phenols (3.093 and 2.873 mg/100 g), respectively during storage of 6 months. Hence, it can be suggested from the study that nutritionally rich persimmon pulp can be prepared with better storage stability which can be used by both small and large scale industries at a lower cost of production

    On the Complexity of Constrained Determinantal Point Processes

    Determinantal Point Processes (DPPs) are probabilistic models that arise in quantum physics and random matrix theory and have recently found numerous applications in theoretical computer science and machine learning. DPPs define probability distributions over subsets of a given ground set, they exhibit interesting properties such as negative correlation, and, unlike other models of negative correlation such as Markov random fields, have efficient algorithms for sampling. When applied to kernel methods in machine learning, DPPs favor subsets of the given data with more diverse features. However, many real-world applications require efficient algorithms to sample from DPPs with additional constraints on the sampled subset, e.g., partition or matroid constraints that are important from the viewpoint of ensuring priors, resource or fairness constraints on the sampled subset. Whether one can efficiently sample from DPPs in such constrained settings is an important problem that was first raised in a survey of DPPs for machine learning by Kulesza and Taskar and studied in some recent works. The main contribution of this paper is the first resolution of the complexity of sampling from DPPs with constraints. On the one hand, we give exact efficient algorithms for sampling from constrained DPPs when the description of the constraints is in unary; this includes special cases of practical importance such as a small number of partition, knapsack or budget constraints. On the other hand, we prove that when the constraints are specified in binary, this problem is #P-hard via a reduction from the problem of computing mixed discriminants; implying that it may be unlikely that there is an FPRAS. Technically, our algorithmic result benefits from viewing the constrained sampling problem via the lens of polynomials and we obtain our complexity results by providing an equivalence between computing mixed discriminants and sampling from partition constrained DPPs. As a consequence, we obtain a few corollaries of independent interest: 1) An algorithm to count, sample (and, hence, optimize) over the base polytope of regular matroids when there are additional (succinct) budget constraints and, 2) An algorithm to evaluate and compute mixed characteristic polynomials, that played a central role in the resolution of the Kadison-Singer problem, for certain special cases

    Functional recombinant antibodies against human chorionic gonadotropin expressed in plants

    Single-chain variable fragments, diabodies and chimeric antibodies (mouse variable domains and human immunoglobulin constant domains) were engineered by DNA recombinant technique and expressed transiently in tobacco leaves. The plants expressed the three types of antigen-binding moieties, accurately and faithfully. The yield obtained was 32 mg, 40 mg and 20 mg respectively, per kg of wet weight of leaves. The chimeric antibody had high affinity for human chorionic gonadotropin (Ka=1.9×1010M−1). All three forms of the recombinant antibodies expressed by plants inhibited the binding of hCG to receptor on Leydig cells

    Substituted Coumarin Derivatives: Synthesis and Evaluation of Antiproliferative and Src Kinase Inhibitory Activities

    Six classes of coumarin derivatives (i.e. 3-alkyl-4-methylcoumarins, pyranocoumarins, coumarin carboxamides, quaternary ammonium coumarins, 7-aminocoumarins, and 4-aminocoumarins) were synthesized and evaluated for inhibition of cell proliferation of colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29), breast carcinoma (MDA-MB-468 or MCF-7), and human ovarian adenocarcinoma (SK-OV-3) cells. C-3-Alkyl substituted analogs of 4-methylcoumarins and pyranocoumarins, 5 and 6, inhibited the cell proliferation of MDA-MB-468 and SK-OV-3 cells by 53-74%, while 3-decyl substituted pyranocoumarin 10 and triethyl substituted quaternary ammonium coumarin derivative 29 inhibited the cell proliferation of HT-29 and SK-OV-3 cells by 63-72% at a concentration of 50 μM. Among all the compounds studied, C-3 decyl substituted quaternary ammonium coumarin derivative 25 exhibited the highest Src kinase inhibition with an IC 50 value of 21.6 μM
