The paper presents actual list of 377 species (36% of Polish fauna) from ten families of Aculeata noted in Łódź during last 30 years. Among them there are 17 protected and 64 threatened species from the „Red List” . For 97 species non-published data are given. Six species are new records for Łódź.Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 dofinansowane zostało ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę

The Importance of Extracellular Matrix in Skeletal Muscle Development and Function

    Get PDF
Skeletal muscle tissue makes up approximately 40% of the total body mass in adult mammals. Contractile muscle fibers building skeletal muscle tissue are coated by an extracellular matrix material (ECM), accounting for 1–10% of the muscle mass. The ECM in skeletal muscle was initially considered as a structure, providing mechanical support for bearing force transmission. Now it is evident that muscle cells adhere to and connect with the ECM, also for signaling, and the ECM provides an appropriate and permissive environment for muscle development and functioning. This chapter summarizes current knowledge on the role of ECM components in skeletal muscle growth and regeneration, which is of great importance for potential therapeutic interventions. It also focuses on the contribution of ECM in the motor function of skeletal muscle as well as on mechanisms mediating muscle ECM remodeling during adaptation to physical activity. The role of the ECM in the metabolic function of skeletal muscle tissue and the ECM disturbances associated with insulin resistance are described. Finally, the attention is paid on potential implications of changes in skeletal muscle ECM assembly and function in health and disease

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) in the service of biotechnology

    Get PDF
Originating in the Andes, the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) was imported to Europe in the 16th century. At present, it is an important crop plant cultivated all over the world, and its production and consumption continue to increase. This popular vegetable is known as a major source of important nutrients including lycopene, bcarotene, flavonoids and vitamin C as well as hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives. Since the discovery that lycopene has anti-oxidative, anti-cancer properties, interest in tomatoes has grown rapidly. The development of genetic engineering tools and plant biotechnology has opened great opportunities for engineering tomato plants. This review presents examples of successful tissue culture and genetically modified tomatoes which resistance to a range of environmental stresses improved, along with fruit quality. Additionally, a successful molecular farming model was established

ROLA I SPECYFIKA POLSKICH ORGANIZACJI POZARZĄDOWYCH W SEKTORZE TEATRU. DIAGNOZA SYTUACJI

    Get PDF
Drugi sektor, nazywany też sektorem prywatnym albo komercyjnym, to sfera biznesu, czyli instytucje i organizacje działające w celu osiągnięcia ekonomicznego zysku.

Influence of crystallographic orientation on the void growth at the grain boundaries in bi-crystals

    Get PDF
Void growth and morphology evolution in fcc bi-crystals are investigated using crystal plasticity finite element method. For that purpose, representative volume element of bi-crystals with a void at the grain boundary are considered in the analysis. Grain boundary is assumed initially perpendicular/coaxial with the straight sides of the cell. Fully periodic boundary conditions are prescribed in the representative volume element and macroscopic stress triaxiality and Lode parameter are kept constant during the whole deformation process. Three different pairs of crystal orientations characterized as hard-hard, soft-soft and soft-hard have been employed for modelling the mechanical response of the bi-crystal. Simulations are performed to study the implications of triaxiality, Lode parameter and crystallographic orientation on slip mechanism, hardening and hence void evolution. The impact of void presence and its growth on the heterogeneity of lattice rotation and resulting grain fragmentation in neighbouring areas is also analysed and discussed.Manjunath Dakshinamurthy and Guadalupe Vadillo kindly acknoledge the funding obtained from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Program (Excellent Science, Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Actions) under REA grant agreement 675602 (Project OUTCOME). Quality of Eggplant Fruits in Relation to Growing Medium Used in Greenhouse Cultivation and to a Cultivar

The objective of this study was to examine sensory quality and physical traits of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) fruits in relation to growing medium used in greenhouse cultivation. Eggplants were grown in a greenhouse with controlled climate and drip fertilizing system, in the three different mediums: coconut fiber, wood fiber (environment friendly mediums) and rockwool (standard horticultural medium). Cultivars used in the experiment were: Scorpio, Oscar, Tango and DRA 2086. Fruits were harvested in June, at optimal maturity. Sensory quality of roasted fruits was analyzed in the panel of 12 experts using the quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA). The set of 19 descriptors of quality plus overall quality were evaluated. Fruit colour was measured with HunterLab colorimeter, using CIE L*a*b* system. Fruit firmness was measured with HPE II durometer, and puncture load with a penetrometer. Results showed that growing mediums influenced some sensory traits, but genotype showed stronger influence on the quality of fruits. Physical traits of fruits were low related to growing mediums, but more to genotype. All the three growing mediums showed their suitability for eggplant cultivation in respect of quality of the fruits
