Investigating the missing data mechanism in quality of life outcomes: a comparison of approaches
Background: Missing data is classified as missing completely at random (MCAR), missing at
random (MAR) or missing not at random (MNAR). Knowing the mechanism is useful in identifying
the most appropriate analysis. The first aim was to compare different methods for identifying this
missing data mechanism to determine if they gave consistent conclusions. Secondly, to investigate
whether the reminder-response data can be utilised to help identify the missing data mechanism.
Methods: Five clinical trial datasets that employed a reminder system at follow-up were used.
Some quality of life questionnaires were initially missing, but later recovered through reminders.
Four methods of determining the missing data mechanism were applied. Two response data
scenarios were considered. Firstly, immediate data only; secondly, all observed responses
(including reminder-response).
Results: In three of five trials the hypothesis tests found evidence against the MCAR assumption.
Logistic regression suggested MAR, but was able to use the reminder-collected data to highlight
potential MNAR data in two trials.
Conclusion: The four methods were consistent in determining the missingness mechanism. One
hypothesis test was preferred as it is applicable with intermittent missingness. Some inconsistencies between the two data scenarios were found. Ignoring the reminder data could potentially give a distorted view of the missingness mechanism. Utilising reminder data allowed the possibility of MNAR to be considered.The Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government Health Directorate.

Evidence of Natural Bluetongue Virus Infection among African Carnivores
Bluetongue is an International Office of Epizootics List A disease described as the century\u27s most economically devastating affliction of sheep. Bluetongue (BLU) viruses were thought to infect only ruminants, shrews, and some rodents, but recently, inadvertent administration of BLU virus-contaminated vaccine resulted in mortality and abortion among domestic dogs. We present evidence of natural BLU virus infection among African carnivores that dramatically widens the spectrum of susceptible hosts. We hypothesize that such infection occurred after ingestion of meat and organs from BLU virus infected prey species. The effect of BLU virus on endangered carnivores such as the cheetah and African wild dog requires urgent investigation. Also, the role of carnivores in the epizootiology of this disease needs elucidation
Three-body resonances in He-6, Li-6, and Be-6, and the soft dipole mode problem of neutron halo nuclei
Using the complex scaling method, the low-lying three-body resonances of
He, Li, and Be are investigated in a parameter-free microscopic
three-cluster model. In He a 2, in Li a 2 and a 1, and in
Be the 0 ground state and a 2 excited state is found. The other
experimentally known 2 state of Li cannot be localized by our present
method. We have found no indication for the existence of the predicted 1
soft dipole state in He. We argue that the sequential decay mode of He
through the resonant states of its two-body subsystem can lead to peaks in the
excitation function. This process can explain the experimental results in the
case of Li, too. We propose an experimental analysis, which can decide

Observation of periodic variable stars towards the galactic spiral arms by EROS II
We present the results of a massive variability search based on a photometric
survey of a six square degree region along the Galactic plane at (, ) and (, ). This
survey was performed in the framework of the EROS II (Exp\'erience de Recherche
d'Objets Sombres) microlensing program. The variable stars were found among
1,913,576 stars that were monitored between April and June 1998 in two
passbands, with an average of 60 measurements. A new period-search technique is
proposed which makes use of a statistical variable that characterizes the
overall regularity of the flux versus phase diagram. This method is well suited
when the photometric data are unevenly distributed in time, as is our case.
1,362 objects whose luminosity varies were selected. Among them we identified 9
Cepheids, 19 RR Lyrae, 34 Miras, 176 eclipsing binaries and 266 Semi-Regular
stars. Most of them are newly identified objects. The cross-identification with
known catalogues has been performed. The mean distance of the RR Lyrae is
estimated to be kpc undergoing an average absorption of
magnitudes. This distance is in good agreement with the one
of disc stars which contribute to the microlensing source star population.Our

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model for coupled analysis of a damaged ship with internal sloshing in beam seas
The flooding of a damaged ship in waves is a complex process, often coupled with the internal and external liquid motion together with the ship hull motion. Paramount to the operation safety, in order to improve the prediction accuracy of ship motion during the flooding process, the strip theory is applied to study the dynamic response of the damaged ship in beam seas; a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model is developed to consider the coupling effects of various factors including internal sloshing of intact cabins and damaged cabins and external waves. The numerical wave tank with a perfectly matched layer absorbing boundary condition is established and validated by the experimental results. The detailed sensitivity study is carried out focusing on the effects of damaged opening sizes, the relative position of opening, and the incident wave and the liquid loading conditions on the dynamic response of the damaged ship in regular beam waves. It is observed that the flooding process was slowed down and interrupted by the water exchanges at the damaged opening due to the dynamic motion. Compared with the opening facing the incident wave, the back one endangered the ship pronouncedly with large amplitude and frequency roll motion. It is also revealed that the liquid tank in the damaged ship imposes a significant influence on its rolling response. It is further demonstrated that the present SPH model is capable of handling the nonlinear phenomenon in a flooding process of a damaged ship
Removing the Microlensing Blending-Parallax Degeneracy Using Source Variability
Microlensing event MACHO 97-SMC-1 is one of the rare microlensing events for
which the source is a variable star, simply because most variable stars are
systematically eliminated from microlensing studies. Using observational data
for this event, we show that the intrinsic variability of a microlensed star is
a powerful tool to constrain the nature of the lens by breaking the degeneracy
between the microlens parallax and the blended light. We also present a
statistical test for discriminating the location of the lens based on the
\chi^2 contours of the vector \Lambda, the inverse of the projected velocity.
We find that while SMC self lensing is somewhat favored over halo lensing,

Postoperative peri-axillary seroma following axillary artery cannulation for surgical treatment of acute type A aortic dissection
The arterial cannulation site for optimal tissue perfusion and cerebral protection during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) for surgical treatment of acute type A aortic dissection remains controversial. Right axillary artery cannulation confers significant advantages, because it provides antegrade arterial perfusion during cardiopulmonary bypass, and allows continuous antegrade cerebral perfusion during hypothermic circulatory arrest, thereby minimizing global cerebral ischemia. However, right axillary artery cannulation has been associated with serious complications, including problems with systemic perfusion during cardiopulmonary bypass, problems with postoperative patency of the artery due to stenosis, thrombosis or dissection, and brachial plexus injury. We herein present the case of a 36-year-old Caucasian man with known Marfan syndrome and acute type A aortic dissection, who had direct right axillary artery cannulation for surgery of the ascending aorta. Postoperatively, the patient developed an axillary perigraft seroma. As this complication has, not, to our knowledge, been reported before in cardiothoracic surgery, we describe this unusual complication and discuss conservative and surgical treatment options
Molecular Assessment of Bacterial Vaginosis by Lactobacillus Abundance and Species Diversity
Background
To date, women are most often diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis (BV) using microscopy based Nugent scoring or Amsel criteria. However, the accuracy is less than optimal. The aim of the present study was to confirm the identity of known BV-associated composition profiles and evaluate indicators for BV using three molecular methods.
Methods
Evaluation of indicators for BV was carried out by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing of the V5-V7 region, a tailor-made 16S rRNA oligonucleotide-based microarray, and a PCR-based profiling technique termed IS-profiling, which is based on fragment variability of the 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer region. An inventory of vaginal bacterial species was obtained from 40 females attending a Dutch sexually transmitted infection outpatient clinic, of which 20 diagnosed with BV (Nugent score 7–10), and 20 BV negative (Nugent score 0–3).
Results
Analysis of the bacterial communities by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed two clusters in the BV negative women, dominated by either Lactobacillus iners or Lactobacillus crispatus and three distinct clusters in the BV positive women. In the former, there was a virtually complete, negative correlation between L. crispatus and L. iners. BV positive subjects showed cluster profiles that were relatively high in bacterial species diversity and dominated by anaerobic species, including Gardnerella vaginalis, and those belonging to the Families of Lachnospiraceae and Leptotrichiaceae. Accordingly, the Gini-Simpson index of species diversity, and the relative abundance Lactobacillus species appeared consistent indicators for BV. Under the conditions used, only the 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing method was suitable to assess species diversity, while all three molecular composition profiling methods were able to indicate Lactobacillus abundance in the vaginal microbiota.
Conclusion
An affordable and simple molecular test showing a depletion of the genus Lactobacillus in combination with an increased species diversity of vaginal microbiota could serve as an alternative and practical diagnostic method for the assessment of BV
Combined Analysis of the Binary-Lens Caustic-Crossing Event MACHO 98-SMC-1
We fit the data for the binary-lens microlensing event MACHO 98-SMC-1 from 5
different microlensing collaborations and find two distinct solutions
characterized by binary separation d and mass ratio q: (d,q)=(0.54,0.50) and
(d,q)=(3.65,0.36), where d is in units of the Einstein radius. However, the
relative proper motion of the lens is very similar in the two solutions, 1.30
km/s/kpc and 1.48 km/s/kpc, thus confirming that the lens is in the Small
Magellanic Cloud. The close binary can be either rotating or approximately
static but the wide binary must be rotating at close its maximum allowed rate
to be consistent with all the data. We measure limb-darkening coefficients for
five bands ranging from I to V. As expected, these progressively decrease with
rising wavelength. This is the first measurement of limb darkening for a

Anti-Müllerian Hormone Levels and Risk of Cancer in Women
OBJECTIVES: To examine if age-specific anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels are associated with cancer risk; and to investigate if age-related AMH trajectories differ between women who develop cancer and women who do not. More specifically, we examined associations with breast cancer, cancers in other tissues expressing AMH receptor AMHR2, and cancers in non-AMHR2-expressing tissues. STUDY DESIGN: We included longitudinal data from 3025 women in the prospective Doetinchem Cohort Study. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the association of baseline age-specific AMH tertiles with cancer. We applied linear mixed models to compare age-related AMH trajectories between women who were diagnosed with cancer and women who were not. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Cancer (n = 385; 139 breast cancers, 112 cancers in other AMHR2-expressing tissues, 134 cancers in non-AMHR2-expressing tissues). RESULTS: Overall, baseline age-specific AMH levels were not associated with cancer risk, although in women ≤ 40 years an increased risk was suggested for breast cancer (HRT2:T1 = 2.06, 95%CI = 0.95-4.48; HRT3:T1 = 2.03, 95%CI = 0.91-4.50). Analysis of age-related AMH trajectories suggested that AMH levels were higher at younger ages and declined faster in women who were diagnosed with cancer compared with women who were not, but our results did not provide evidence for actual differences in trajectories. CONCLUSIONS: Our results did not provide evidence for an association between age-specific AMH levels and age-related trajectories and risk of cancer. However, effect estimates for breast cancer were in line with risk-increasing effects found in previous studies
