Secondary School English Language Teachers’ Professional Development Needs, Expectations And Practices In Malaysia

    Get PDF
Unsatisfied professional development needs, unfulfilled expectations and insufficient professional development practices became the stumbling blocks for the English Language (EL) teachers to successfully participate in EL professional development (2007-2009)

The Concept of Prayer Song to God in Tamil Literature

    Get PDF
One can see the literary forms that have emerged from time to time in various forms, such as Sangam literature, Pathinenkilkanakku books, Bhakti literature, Epic Literature, and Minor Literature (Various Genres), which are not the traditions of Tamil literature. This article is a treatise on "Greetings to God," which has been studied from time to time in grammar and literature with the aim of understanding the history of the tradition of worshipping God and then composing poems among the Tamils. The fact that conceptualization varies from time to time is considered to be one of the historical facts of literature. The changes in society are also reflected in the field of literature. It can be seen that the worship of God has been studied at various levels in the field of Tamil literature and grammar. This article examines the hymns referred to as the worship of God in the system of Mangala Thuthi, which are the greetings in these literary genres, and records the interactive concepts in them

    Bacillus pumilus SAFR-032 isolate

    Get PDF
The present invention relates to discovery and isolation of a biologically pure culture of a Bacillus pumilus SAFR-032 isolate with UV sterilization resistant properties. This novel strain has been characterized on the basis of phenotypic traits, 16S rDNA sequence analysis and DNA-DNA hybridization. According to the results of these analyses, this strain belongs to the genus Bacillus. The GenBank accession number for the 16S rDNA sequence of the Bacillus pumilus SAFR-032 isolate is AY167879

    UV-Resistant Non-Spore-Forming Bacteria From Spacecraft-Assembly Facilities

    Get PDF
Four species of non-spore-forming bacteria collected from clean-room surfaces in spacecraft-assembly facilities could survive doses of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that would suffice to kill most known cultivable bacterial species. In a previous study, high UV resistance was found in spores of the SAFR-032 strain of Bacillus pumilus, as reported in "Ultraviolet- Resistant Bacterial Spores," NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 31, No. 9 (September 2007), page 94. These studies are parts of a continuing effort to understand the survival of hardy species of bacteria under harsh conditions, and develop means of sterilizing spacecraft to prevent biocontamination of Mars that could in turn interfere with future life detection missions. The four species investigated were Arthrobacter sp. KSC_Ak2i, Microbacterium schleiferi LMA_AkK1, Brevundimonas diminuta KSC_Ak3a, and Sphingomonas trueperi JSC_Ak7-3. In the study, cells of these species were mixed into Atacama Desert soil (to elucidate the shadowing effect of soil particles) and the resulting mixtures were tested both in solution and in a desiccated state under simulated Martian atmospheric and UV conditions. The UV-survival indices of Arthrobacter sp. and Microbacterium schleiferi were found to be comparable to those of Bacillus pumilus spores

An Assessment of Knowledge Level on Insulin Therapy Among Nurses Before and After Educational Workshop

    Get PDF
Objective: This study was conducted to compare the difference between the pre-test and post-test knowledge level1 on insulin therapy among nurses. Methods: The study included 100 participants (newly joined nurses), at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The knowledge scores of the participants were assessed before and after the workshop. Results: The mean knowledge score for all the participants improved significantly after attending the workshop, irrespective of age. More than 90% participants reported having knowledge on insulin therapy in post-test compared to about 58% in the pre-test. About 85% participants showed having adequate knowledge, and about 10% of the participants had moderately adequate knowledge. The remaining 5% of the nurses possessed inadequate knowledge in post-test. Conclusion: The current study demonstrated that mean knowledge score improved significantly for all the participants after attending the workshop. To provide quality diabetes care and education, the nurses shouldobtain continuing professional education

Laparoscopic excision of accessory cavitated uterine mass and its vaginal retrieval in toto

    Get PDF
Accessory cavitated uterine mass (ACUM), a rare cause of dysmenorrhoea, has to be diagnosed with essential criteria and is to be treated with appropriate surgery. Hereby, presenting the surgical approach by laparoscopy and vaginal retrieval of the specimen in toto as a perfect tool. We report a rare case study of ACUM, a mullerian anomaly in a 27 years old female with severe dysmenorrhoea with secondary infertility, evaluated and diagnosed as ACUM. Preoperative diagnosis and surgical plane evaluation are made by ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. Hysteroscopic examination of the cavity was normal and laparoscopic excision of an ill-defined mass in the anterior and right lateral wall of 3×2 cm followed by retrieval of the specimen through a pouch of Douglas. Myometrial defect sutured. Cut section showed chocolate coloured fluid in the endometrial cavity and the same confirmed by histopathology. This is the first case report doing vaginal retrieval of ACUM in toto

Immediate access arteriovenous grafts versus tunnelled central venous catheters: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

Background Autologous arteriovenous fistulae (AVF) are the optimal form of vascular access for haemodialysis. AVFs typically require 6 to 8 weeks to “mature” from the time of surgery before they can be cannulated. Patients with end-stage renal disease needing urgent vascular access therefore traditionally require insertion of a tunnelled central venous catheter (TCVC). TCVCs are associated with high infection rates and central venous stenosis. Early cannulation synthetic arteriovenous grafts (ecAVG) provide a novel alternative to TCVCs, permitting rapid access to the bloodstream and immediate needling for haemodialysis. Published rates of infection in small series are low. The aim of this study is to compare whether TCVC ± AVF or ecAVG ± AVF provide a better strategy for managing patients requiring immediate vascular access for haemodialysis. Methods/design This is a prospective randomised controlled trial comparing the strategy of TCVC ± AVF to ecAVG ± AVF. Patients requiring urgent vascular access will receive a study information sheet and written consent will be obtained. Patients will be randomised to receive either: (i) TCVC (and native AVF if this is anatomically possible) or (ii) ecAVG (± AVF). 118 patients will be recruited. The primary outcome is systemic bacteraemia at 6 months. Secondary outcomes include culture-proven bacteraemia rates at 1 year and 2 years; primary and secondary patency rates at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months; stenoses; re-intervention rates; re-admission rate; mortality and quality of life. Additionally, treatment delays, impact on service provision and cost-effectiveness will be evaluated. Discussion This is the first randomised controlled trial comparing TCVC to ecAVG for patients requiring urgent vascular access for haemodialysis. The complications of TCVC are considered an unfortunate necessity in patients requiring urgent haemodialysis who do not have autologous vascular access. If this study demonstrates that ecAVGs provide a safe and practical alternative to TCVC, this could instigate a paradigm shift in nephrology thinking and access planning.</p
