    Inflight Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Responses to Medications Commonly Used in Spaceflight

    Researchers do not know if medications act the same in the spaceflight environment as they do on Earth. Aspects of the spaceflight environment (low gravity, radiation exposure, closed environment, stress) have been shown to alter human physiology. Some of these physiological changes could be expected to alter either pharmacokinetics (PK, how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes and excretes administered medications) or pharmacodynamics (PD, receptors or signaling systems that are the targets of medication action). Anecdotal data has suggested that, at least for certain medications or indications, inflight medication efficacy is poor. In order to prepare for exploration missions where speedy evacuation to Earth may not be a possibility, the likelihood of unexpected medication action must be determined

    Finite average lengths in critical loop models

    A relation between the average length of loops and their free energy is obtained for a variety of O(n)-type models on two-dimensional lattices, by extending to finite temperatures a calculation due to Kast. We show that the (number) averaged loop length L stays finite for all non-zero fugacities n, and in particular it does not diverge upon entering the critical regime n -> 2+. Fully packed loop (FPL) models with n=2 seem to obey the simple relation L = 3 L_min, where L_min is the smallest loop length allowed by the underlying lattice. We demonstrate this analytically for the FPL model on the honeycomb lattice and for the 4-state Potts model on the square lattice, and based on numerical estimates obtained from a transfer matrix method we conjecture that this is also true for the two-flavour FPL model on the square lattice. We present in addition numerical results for the average loop length on the three critical branches (compact, dense and dilute) of the O(n) model on the honeycomb lattice, and discuss the limit n -> 0. Contact is made with the predictions for the distribution of loop lengths obtained by conformal invariance methods.Comment: 20 pages of LaTeX including 3 figure

    International comparability of reference unit costs of education services: when harmonizing methodology is not enough (PECUNIA project)

    Background: Health problems can lead to costs in the education sector. However, these costs are rarely incorporated in health economic evaluations due to the lack of reference unit costs (RUCs), cost per unit of service, of education services and of validated methods to obtain them. In this study, a standardized unit cost calculation tool developed in the PECUNIA project, the PECUNIA RUC Template for services, was applied to calculate the RUCs of selected education services in five European countries. Methods: The RUCs of special education services and of educational therapy were calculated using the information collected via an exploratory gray literature search and contact with service providers. Results: The RUCs of special education services ranged from €55 to €189 per school day. The RUCs of educational therapy ranged from €6 to €25 per contact and from €5 to €35 per day. Variation was observed in the type of input data and measurement unit, among other. Discussion: The tool helped reduce variability in the RUCs related to costing methodology and gain insights into other aspects that contribute to the variability (e.g. data availability). Further research and efforts to generate high quality input data are required to reduce the variability of the RUCs

    Resonance Effects in the Nonadiabatic Nonlinear Quantum Dimer

    The quantum nonlinear dimer consisting of an electron shuttling between the two sites and in weak interaction with vibrations, is studied numerically under the application of a DC electric field. A field-induced resonance phenomenon between the vibrations and the electronic oscillations is found to influence the electronic transport greatly. For initially delocalization of the electron, the resonance has the effect of a dramatic increase in the transport. Nonlinear frequency mixing is identified as the main mechanism that influences transport. A characterization of the frequency spectrum is also presented.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
