    A deep-sea coral record of North Atlantic radiocarbon through the Younger Dryas: Evidence for intermediate water/deepwater reorganization

    Our record of Younger Dryas intermediate-depth seawater Δ^(14)C from North Atlantic deep-sea corals supports a link between abrupt climate change and intermediate ocean variability. Our data show that northern source intermediate water (∼1700 m) was partially replaced by (14)^C-depleted southern source water at the onset of the event, consistent with a reduction in the rate of North Atlantic Deep Water formation. This transition requires the existence of large, mobile gradients of Δ^(14)C in the ocean during the Younger Dryas. The Δ^(14)C water column profile from Keigwin (2004) provides direct evidence for the presence of one such gradient at the beginning of the Younger Dryas (∼12.9 ka), with a 100‰ offset between shallow (<∼2400 m) and deep water. Our early Younger Dryas data are consistent with this profile and also show a Δ^(14)C inversion, with 35‰ more enriched water at ∼2400 m than at ∼1700 m. This feature is probably the result of mixing between relatively well ^(14)C ventilated northern source water and more poorly ^(14)C ventilated southern source intermediate water, which is slightly shallower. Over the rest of the Younger Dryas our intermediate water/deepwater coral Δ^(14)C data gradually increase, while the atmosphere Δ^(14)C drops. For a very brief interval at ∼12.0 ka and at the end of the Younger Dryas (11.5 ka), intermediate water Δ^(14)C (∼1200 m) approached atmospheric Δ14C. These enriched Δ^(14)C results suggest an enhanced initial Δ^(14)C content of the water and demonstrate the presence of large lateral Δ^(14)C gradients in the intermediate/deep ocean in addition to the sharp vertical shift at ∼2500 m. The transient Δ^(14)C enrichment at ∼12.0 ka occurred in the middle of the Younger Dryas and demonstrates that there is at least one time when the intermediate/deep ocean underwent dramatic change but with much smaller effects in other paleoclimatic records

    Most of the tufas in the Pyramid Lake subbasin were deposited within the last 35,000 yr, including most of the mound tufas that border the existing lake. Many of the older tufas (\u3e 21,000 yr B.P.) contained in the mounds were formed in association with ground-water discharge. The radiocarbon (14C) ages of the older tufas represent maximum estimates of the time of their formation. Lake Lahontan experienced large and abrupt rises in level at ~ 22,000, 15,000, and 11,000 yr B.P. and three abrupt recessions in level at ~ 16,000, 13,600, and 10,000 yr B.P. The lake-level rises that were initiated at ~23,500 and 15,500 yr B.P. are believed to indicate the passage of the polar jet stream over the Lahontan basin. During expansion of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, the jet stream moved south across the basin, and during the contraction of the Ice Sheet, the jet stream moved north across the basin. The bulk of the carbonate contained in the mound tufas was deposited during the last major lake cycle (~23,500-12,000 yr B.P.), indicating that ground- and surface-water discharges increased at ~23,500 and decreased at ~ 12,000 yr B.P. A lake-level oscillation that occurred between 11,000 and 10,000 yr B.P. is represented by a 2-cm thick layer of dense laminated tufa that occurs at and below 1180 m in the low-elevation tufa mounds and at 1205 m in the Winnemucca Lake subbasin

The lack of a strong correspondence between North Atlantic climate records and the Owens Lake delta-oxygen-18 record has two possible explanations: (1) the sequence of large and abrupt climate change indicated in North Atlantic records is not global in scope and is largely confined to the North Atlantic and surrounding areas, or (2) Owens Lake is located in a part of the Great Basin that is relatively insensitive to the effects of climate perturbations recorded in the North Atlantic region

    Deep-sea corals are a promising new archive of paleoclimate. Coupled radiocarbon and U-series dates allow ^(14)C to be used as a tracer of ocean circulation rate in the same manner as it is used in the modern ocean. Diagnetic alteration of coral skeletons on the seafloor requires a thorough cleaning of contaminating phases of carbon. In addition, 10% of the coral must be chemically leached prior to dissolution to remove adsorbed modern CO_2. A survey of modern samples from the full Δ^(14)C gradient in the deep ocean demonstrates that the coralline CaCO_3 records the radiocarbon value of the dissolved inorganic carbon

    Renal function and cortical blood flow during the recovery phase of acute renal failure. The characteristics of the recovery process in dichromate-induced acute renal failure were determined. Rats were studied 1, 4, 7, and 14 days after the s.c. injection of either saline or potassium dichromate. In the sham-injected control animals, all values at each interval were similar. The typical pattern of acute renal failure was seen one day after dichromate injection: glomerular filtration rate (GFR) fell 80%, total renal blood flow (TRBF) was reduced 35%, the proportional flow to the outer cortex was diminished, and the urinary to plasma (U/P) inulin clearance was reduced. The early recovery phase, days 4 and 7, was characterized by: 1) a mild but significant diuresis, 2) progressive improvement in GFR and an increase in the proportional flow to the outer cortex, which actually exceeded control values, 3) a dissociation between improvement in renal function and changes in TRBF, since GFR increased progressively while TRBF remained relatively fixed, and 4) improvement in GFR that was associated with a progressive and parallel increase in absolute perfusion of the outer cortex. The present data suggest that the recovery process occurs in two stages. In the first stage, the restoration of outer cortical perfusion and renal function precedes the recovery of TRBF and tubular function, which occur during the second stage of the recovery process.Fonction rénale et débit sanguin rénal cortical au cours de la période de récupération de l'insuffisance rénale aiguë. Les caractéristiques du processus de récupération après une insuffisance rénale aiguë induite par le dichromate, ont été déterminées. Des rats ont été étudiés 1, 4, 7, et l4 jours après l'injection s.c. de dichromate de potassium ou de soluté salé. Chez les animaux contrôles, toutes les valeurs obtenues sont semblables. L'aspect typique de l'insuffisance rénale aiguë est observée un jour après l'injection de dichromate: GFR diminue de 80%, le débit sanquin rénal (TRBF) est réduit de 35%, la fraction de ce débit délivrée au cortex superficiel diminue et le U/P de l'inuline est abaissé. La phase de récupération précoce, aux jours 4 et 7, est caractérisée par: 1) une diurèse peu importante mais significativement plus grande, 2) une amélioration progressive de GFR et une augmentation de la fraction du débit délivrée au cortex superficiel, qui devient supérieure aux valeurs contrôles, 3) une dissociation entre l'amélioration de la fonction rénale indiquée par l'augmentation progressive de GFR, et TRBF qui reste relativement bas, 4) et une amélioration de GFR qui est associée à une augmentation progressive et parallèle du débit absolu de perfusion du cortex superficiel. Ces résultats suggèrent que le processus de récuparation survient en deux étapes.     The effect of exogenous ubiquinone-8 (Q8) on IgG- and C3b-mediated phagocytosis of sensitized sheep red blood cells and of opsonized Staphylococcus aureus by macrophages was studied by morphological and quantitative methods. Q8 stimulated the initial events of phagocytosis, that is, attachment and ingestion, in which occupancy of the Fe receptor by IgG was shown to be of critical significance. The kinetics of competitive inhibition of phagocytosis of opsonized bacteria by macrophages by using Fe fragments suggested the intimate role of the kinetics of the Fe receptor in the initial events of phagocytosis and, further, the modulation of the kinetics of the Fe receptor by Q8 as the basis of enhanced phagocytosis by Q
