In-Situ Preheating in Hybrid Layered Manufacturing for Tooling Elements
Solidification cracking of hard materials such as H13 tool steel is one of the major
problems in metal based Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes. Hybrid Layered
Manufacturing (HLM) is one of the metal based AM process which uses Metal Inert Gas (MIG)
cladding for addition and CNC milling for subtraction of material. In this work, an in-situ
induction heating based preheating system has been developed to solve the solidification
cracking problem. The Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Induction heating methods are compared
and it has been found that the induction based preheating system can produce better
microstructure and sound products. In the experimental procedure, before deposition of a layer
the prebuild layer is preheated up to 350-5000C. Also the effect of in-situ preheating on the
microstructure of the deposited layers have been studied using Scanning Electron Microscope
(SEM).Mechanical Engineerin
Challenges in path planning of high energy density beams for additive manufacturing
As there are no cutting forces in High Energy Density (HED) beams like lasers and Electron Beam (EB), their speeds are limited only by their positioning systems. On the other hand, as the entire matrix of the 3D printed part has to be addressed by the thin beam in multiple passes in multiple layers, they have to travel several kilometers in tiny motions. Therefore, the acceleration of the motion system becomes the limiting factor than velocity or precision. The authors have proposed an area-filling strategy for EB to fill the layer with optimal squares to exploit analog and hardware computing. 3D printing requires uniform intensity slanged as flat hat shape whereas the default is Gaussian. The authors have proposed an optimal algorithm that takes into account the maximum velocity and acceleration for achieving a flat hat without any compromise on productivity
Tracheo-innominate Artery Fistula in a Complicated Penetrating Neck Trauma: A Successfully Managed Rare Complication of Low Tracheotomy
Tracheo-innominate artery fistula is a rare complication of tracheotomy with very high mortality rate. Only a few patients survive this complication as reported in the literature. Here we report the case of a 54-year-old gentleman who presented to the emergency department with a history of penetrating neck trauma following a road traffic accident. Neck exploration and tracheotomy were done to secure the airway. After two weeks, the patient had an episode of massive stomal bleed for which he was taken to the operating room and re-explored. A tracheo-innominate artery fistula was detected, and right side aorto-carotid and right side aorto-subclavian anastomoses were done using reversed saphenous vein graft with interruption of flow. Following a successful surgery, the patient was decannulated later, and now lives a healthy normal life. Early diagnosis and immediate intervention are the key in managing this complication. Bedside management also plays a vital role
Incidence of Dyspnea and Assessment of Cardiac and Pulmonary Function in Patients With Stable Coronary Artery Disease Receiving Ticagrelor, Clopidogrel, or Placebo in the ONSET/OFFSET Study
ObjectivesWe prospectively assessed cardiac and pulmonary function in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) treated with ticagrelor, clopidogrel, or placebo in the ONSET/OFFSET (A Multi-Centre Randomised, Double-Blind, Double-Dummy Parallel Group Study of the Onset and Offset of Antiplatelet Effects of AZD6140 Compared With Clopidogrel and Placebo With Aspirin as Background Therapy in Patients With Stable Coronary Artery Disease) study.BackgroundTicagrelor reduces cardiovascular events more effectively than clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndromes. Dyspnea develops in some patients treated with ticagrelor, and it is not known whether this is associated with changes in cardiac or pulmonary function.MethodsIn all, 123 stable aspirin-treated CAD patients randomly received either ticagrelor (180 mg load, then 90 mg twice daily; n = 57), clopidogrel (600 mg load, then 75 mg daily; n = 54), or placebo (n = 12) for 6 weeks in a double-blind, double-dummy design. Electrocardiography, echocardiography, serum N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, and pulmonary function tests were performed before (baseline) and 6 weeks after drug administration and/or after development of dyspnea.ResultsAfter drug administration, dyspnea was reported by 38.6%, 9.3%, and 8.3% of patients in the ticagrelor, clopidogrel, and placebo groups, respectively (p < 0.001). Most instances were mild and/or lasted <24 h, although 3 patients discontinued ticagrelor because of dyspnea. Eight of 22 and 17 of 22 ticagrelor-treated patients experiencing dyspnea did so within 24 h and 1 week, respectively, after drug administration. In all treatment groups, and in ticagrelor-treated patients with dyspnea, there were no significant changes between baseline and 6 weeks in any of the cardiac or pulmonary function parameters.ConclusionsDyspnea is commonly associated with ticagrelor therapy, but was not associated in this study with any adverse change in cardiac or pulmonary function. 4D printing of materials for the future: Opportunities and challenges
The concept of 4D printing is its formation of complex three-dimensional structures that have the ability to adopt different shapes and forms when subjected to different environmental stimuli. A few researchers simply view 4D printing as an extended technique of 3D printing or additive manufacturing with the added constraint of time. However, the unique shape change mechanism exhibited in this process is a combination of shape programming and the usage of smart active materials mostly polymers. This review article highlights the various smart materials, activation mechanisms and the shape-changing techniques employed in the 4D printing process. The potential of the shape-changing structures and their current applications in various biomedical and engineering fields is also explored. The article aims to emphasize the potential and viability of 4D printing and focused on providing an in-depth insight into the 4D printing process
4D printing of smart polymer nanocomposites: integrating graphene and acrylate based shape memory polymers
The ever-increasing demand for materials to have superior properties and satisfy functions in the field of soft robotics and beyond has resulted in the advent of the new field of four-dimensional (4D) printing. The ability of these materials to respond to various stimuli inspires novel applications and opens several research possibilities. In this work, we report on the 4D printing of one such Shape Memory Polymer (SMP) tBA-co-DEGDA (tert-Butyl Acrylate with diethylene glycol diacrylate). The novelty lies in establishing the relationship between the various characteristic properties (tensile stress, surface roughness, recovery time, strain fixity, and glass transition temperature) concerning the fact that the print parameters of the laser pulse frequency and print speed are governed in the micro-stereolithography (Micro SLA) method. It is found that the sample printed with a speed of 90 mm/s and 110 pulses/s possessed the best batch of properties, with shape fixity percentages of about 86.3% and recovery times as low as 6.95 s. The samples built using the optimal parameters are further subjected to the addition of graphene nanoparticles, which further enhances all the mechanical and surface properties. It has been observed that the addition of 0.3 wt.% of graphene nanoparticles provides the best results
