Crowd Counting with Decomposed Uncertainty
Research in neural networks in the field of computer vision has achieved
remarkable accuracy for point estimation. However, the uncertainty in the
estimation is rarely addressed. Uncertainty quantification accompanied by point
estimation can lead to a more informed decision, and even improve the
prediction quality. In this work, we focus on uncertainty estimation in the
domain of crowd counting. With increasing occurrences of heavily crowded events
such as political rallies, protests, concerts, etc., automated crowd analysis
is becoming an increasingly crucial task. The stakes can be very high in many
of these real-world applications. We propose a scalable neural network
framework with quantification of decomposed uncertainty using a bootstrap
ensemble. We demonstrate that the proposed uncertainty quantification method
provides additional insight to the crowd counting problem and is simple to
implement. We also show that our proposed method exhibits the state of the art
performances in many benchmark crowd counting datasets.Comment: Accepted in AAAI 2020 (Main Technical Track

Anaerobic Biotransformation of Aromatic and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soil Microcosms: A Review
Industrial activities introduce a wide variety of xenobiotic aromatic compounds into the biosphere. These aromatic and polycyclic aromatic compounds find their way into anaerobic marine and freshwater sediments, saturated aquifers, and waterlogged soils where neither their impact on carbon flow nor their propensity to persist is clearly understood. Although some halogenated aromatic compounds are degraded via anaerobic pathways, anaerobic transformation of aromatics remains limited to a small range of chemicals. This paper reviews anaerobic transformation processes for aromatic compounds, particularly polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil microcosms. A simplified pathway of PAH biotransformation and a conceptual pathway of PAH degradation under different redox-conditions are presented
A Review of Wireless Sensor Networks with Cognitive Radio Techniques and Applications
The advent of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has inspired various sciences and telecommunication with its applications, there is a growing demand for robust methodologies that can ensure extended lifetime. Sensor nodes are small equipment which may hold less electrical energy and preserve it until they reach the destination of the network. The main concern is supposed to carry out sensor routing process along with transferring information. Choosing the best route for transmission in a sensor node is necessary to reach the destination and conserve energy. Clustering in the network is considered to be an effective method for gathering of data and routing through the nodes in wireless sensor networks. The primary requirement is to extend network lifetime by minimizing the consumption of energy. Further integrating cognitive radio technique into sensor networks, that can make smart choices based on knowledge acquisition, reasoning, and information sharing may support the network's complete purposes amid the presence of several limitations and optimal targets. This examination focuses on routing and clustering using metaheuristic techniques and machine learning because these characteristics have a detrimental impact on cognitive radio wireless sensor node lifetime
The work and creativity of literate prison inmates
Creativity is not a planned emergence. As it happens, when a person who convicted a crime in the eyes of the society, or by chance, the crime and its consequences isolate him in prison, his feelings of guilt make him to do some kind of artistic work. People like Mr.Puthuraja, Mr. Pozhilan, Dr. Prakash, Mr. Chidambaram and Mr. Puzhilan, who were convicted in Chennai Puzhal Central Jail have written novels, short stories (collections), empirical essays and collections of poems written. All their works are taken up in this article. and its literary style, language style, the work of storytellers and the writing style of these prison inmates are examined well in this article. This article proves that the works of these prison inmates have some unique features
Depression, anxiety, stress and its correlates among urban school going adolescents in Tamilnadu, India
Background: Undetected and untreated mental disorders can impair a person’s ability to perform at school or work place, cope with daily activities of life and can lead to severe psychiatric disorders and consequences later in their life. Study objective was to determine the prevalence and patterns of depression, anxiety and stress among 400 school going adolescents belonging to classes 10th to 12th of Tirunelveli district, Tamilnadu, India.Methods: Burden of Depression, anxiety and stress was assessed using DASS21 questionnaire. Chi-square test was done using SPSS software version 21 to test for statistical significance.Results: Overall prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress was 73.6%, 86.5% and 24.7% respectively. Depression (p value=0.01), Anxiety (p value = 0.005) and stress (p value = 0.007) were significantly observed more among 10th class students when compared with other classes.Conclusions: The present study has identified a higher prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress among students. This warrants immediate action of creating awareness among teachers and parents in early identification and treatment to prevent serious consequences in later life
