    Global existence, uniqueness and stability for nonlinear dissipative bulk-interface interaction systems

    We show global well-posedness and exponential stability of equilibria for a general class of nonlinear dissipative bulk-interface systems. They correspond to thermodynamically consistent gradient structure models of bulk-interface interaction. The setting includes nonlinear slow and fast diffusion in the bulk and nonlinear coupled diffusion on the interface. Additional driving mechanisms can be included and non-smooth geometries and coefficients are admissible, to some extent. An important application are volume-surface reaction-diffusion systems with nonlinear coupled diffusion.Comment: 21 page

    Asymptotic behaviour of a rigid body with a cavity filled by a viscous liquid

    We consider the system of equations modeling the free motion of a rigid body with a cavity filled by a viscous (Navier-Stokes) liquid. We give a rigorous proof of Zhukovskiy's Theorem, which states that in the limit of time going to infinity, the relative fluid velocity tends to zero and the rigid velocity of the full structure tends to a steady rotation around one of the principle axes of inertia. The existence of global weak solutions for this system was established previously. In particular, we prove that every weak solution of this type is subject to Zhukovskiy's Theorem. Independently of the geometry and of parameters, this shows that the presence of fluid prevents precession of the body in the limit. In general, we cannot predict which axis will be attained, but we show stability of the largest axis and provide criteria on the initial data which are decisive in special cases.Comment: 18 pages, 0 figure

    Chinese Medicine Student Clubs in Taipei, Taiwan

    This thesis focuses on a communal form of transmission of Chinese medicine in contemporary Taiwan: Chinese medicine university student clubs. Offering fundamental Chinese medicine curricula to students and the interested public, the student clubs used to serve as a direct educational steppingstone towards licensed practice. Recent changes in medical education policy, however, made a university degree in Chinese medicine a requirement, thereby pushing informal ways of knowledge transmission into the realm of lay activity. Nevertheless, the clubs remain active and still serve as a community for people interested in Chinese medicine, including those wanting to pursue it professionally. Based on field research conducted in two such university clubs in Taipei in early 2018, this thesis first outlines the challenges and tensions faced and negotiated by those club members with professional ambitions. Not (yet) enrolled in “official” Chinese medicine programs at university but already deeply engaged in learning, they constitute a group of people rarely represented in academic literature, namely those just orienting themselves towards becoming Chinese medicine physicians. These processes of orientation and becoming are shaped by organizational, economic, and epistemological pressures and embedded in transnational movements, imaginaries, and regulatory regimes. Secondly, the thesis examines the function and position of the clubs in the changing landscape of Chinese medical education in Taiwan, as well as in the wider field of transmission of Chinese medicine. I argue that they foster continued interest in Chinese medicine in an environment that has favored biomedicine since the Japanese colonial era and that they, although through paths more winded than before, still contribute to the reproduction of professional Chinese medical expertise. In addition, they provide space for communal forms of healthcare. Lastly, they contribute to the maintenance of everyday healthcare competence in the wider public, or what Arthur Kleinman (1980) has called the “popular sector of healthcare.

    Fluctuations in Single-Shot ϵ\epsilon-Deterministic Work Extraction

    There has been an increasing interest in the quantification of nearly deterministic work extraction from a finite number of copies of microscopic particles in finite time. This paradigm, so called single-shot epsilon-deterministic work extraction, considers processes with small failure probabilities. However, the resulting fluctuations in the extracted work entailed by this failure probability have not been studied before. In the standard thermodynamics paradigm fluctuation theorems are powerful tools to study fluctuating quantities. Given that standard fluctuation theorems are inadequate for a single-shot scenario, here we formulate and prove a fluctuation relation specific to the single-shot epsilon-deterministic work extraction to bridge this gap. Our results are general in the sense that we allow the system to be in contact with the heat bath at all times. As a corollary of our theorem we derive the known bounds on the epsilon-deterministic work

    Going beyond instrument interactions: towards a more comprehensive policy mix conceptualization for environmental technological change

    Reaching a better understanding of the policies and politics of transitions presents a main agenda item in the emerging field of sustainability transitions. One important requirement for these transitions, such as the move towards a decarbonized energy system, is the redirection and acceleration of technological change, for which policies play a key role. Several studies of policies supporting environmental technological change have argued for the need to combine different policy instruments in so-called policy mixes. However, existing policy mix studies often fall short of reflecting the complexity and dynamics of actual policy mixes and the underlying politics of (re)designing them. In this paper we take a first step towards a more comprehensive, interdisciplinary policy mix concept for environmental technological change based on a review of the bodies of literature on innovation studies, environmental economics and policy analysis. The concept introduces a clear terminology and consists of the three building blocks elements, processes and characteristics, which can be delineated by several dimensions. Throughout the paper, we illustrate the concept using the example of the policy mix for fostering the transition of the German energy system to renewable power generation technologies. We argue that the proposed concept provides an integrating analytical framework for empirical studies analyzing the impact of the policy mix on environmental technological change and sustainability transitions more broadly. Finally, we derive policy implications and suggest avenues for future research
