    Exclusionary pricing in two-sided markets

    This paper studies the incentives to engage in exclusionary pricing in the context of two-sided markets. Platforms are horizontally differentiated, and seek to attract users of two groups who single-home and enjoy indirect network externalities from the size of the opposite user group active on the same platform. The entrant incurs a fixed cost of entry, and the incumbent can commit to its prices before the entry decision is taken. The incumbent has thus the option to either accommodate entry, or to exclude entry and enjoy monopolistic profits, albeit under the constraint that its price must be low enough to not leave any room for an entrant to cover its fixed cost of entry. We find that, in the spirit of the literature on limit pricing, under certain circumstances even platforms find it profitable to exclude entrants if the fixed entry cost lies above a certain threshold. By studying the properties of the threshold, we show that the stronger the network externality, the lower the thresholds for which incumbent platforms find it profitable to exclude. We also find that entry deterrence is more likely to harm consumers the weaker are network externalities, and the more differentiated are the two platforms

    Transmission of second-hand smoke sensitivity and smoking attitude in a family

    introduction and objective. The role of genetic factors in nicotine dependence is well understood, but no information is available on the inheritability of second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure sensitivity and their co-variance. materials and methods. 186 adult same-gender pairs of twin (146 monozygotic, 40 dizygotic; 44+/-17 years+/-SD) completed a questionnaire. results. The model showed a significant role of unshared environmental factors influencing the co-variance between smoking habit and SHS sensitivity (re=-0.191, 95% CI, -0.316 to -0.056, or the total phenotypic correlation of rph=-0.406, p<0.001) without evidence for genetic covariation. Age, gender and country-adjusted analysis indicated 51.5% heritability for smoking habit (95% confidence interval/CI/, 6.2 to 89.8%), 49.7% for SHS sensitivity (95%CI, 19.1-72.0%), 35.5% for general opinions on SHS exposure in restaurants/cafes (95%CI, 10.7-58.6%), and 16.9% in pubs/bars (95%CI, 0.0-49.0%). conclusions. The co-variance between SHS sensitivity and smoking habits is driven mainly by the unshared environment. SHS sensitivity is moderately inheritable. The considerable influence of environmental factors on general opinions on SHS exposure in designated indoor public venues emphasizes the importance of smoking bans and health behaviour interventions at the individual level in developing an anti-smoking attitude

    No association of alcohol use and the risk of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease: data from a European Prospective cohort study (EPIC)

    Background The role of long -term alcohol consumption for the risk of developing ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) is unclear. Aim s For the first time, t o prospectively assess the role of pre -disease alcohol consumption o n the risk of developing UC or CD. Methods Nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC - IBD ), incident UC and CD cases and ma tched controls where included. At recruitment, participants completed validated food frequency and lifestyle questionnaires. Alcohol consumption was classified as either: non -use, former, light ( ≤ 0.5 and 1 drink/week), below the recommended limits (BRL) ( ≤ 1 and 2 drinks/day), moderate ( ≤ 2.5 and 5 drinks/day) , or heavy use (>2.5 and >5 drinks/ day) for women and men, respectively ; and was expressed as consumption at enrolment and during lifetime. The corresponding figures for lifetime non -use, former, light, BRL, moderate and heavy use were : 3%/5%/2 3%/44%/19%/6% and 5%/2%/25%/44%/23 %/1% for UC and CD cases , respectively. There were no associations between any categories of alcohol consumption and risk of UC or CD in the una djusted and adjusted odds ratios . Conclusion There was no evidence of association s between alcohol use and the odds of developing either UC or CD

    Demonstration of Metabolic and Cellular Effects of Portal Vein Ligation Using Multi-Modal PET/MRI Measurements in Healthy Rat Liver.

    OBJECTIVES: In the early recognition of portal vein ligation (PVL) induced tumor progression, positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) could improve diagnostic accuracy of conventionally used methods. It is unknown how PVL affects metabolic patterns of tumor free hepatic tissues. The aim of this preliminary study is to evaluate the effect of PVL on glucose metabolism, using PET/MRI imaging in healthy rat liver. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 30) underwent PVL. 2-deoxy-2-(18F)fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) PET/MRI imaging (nanoScan PET/MRI) and morphological/histological examination were performed before (Day 0) and 1, 2, 3, and 7 days after PVL. Dynamic PET data were collected and the standardized uptake values (SUV) for ligated and non-ligated liver lobes were calculated in relation to cardiac left ventricle (SUVVOI/SUVCLV) and mean liver SUV (SUVVOI/SUVLiver). RESULTS: PVL induced atrophy of ligated lobes, while non-ligated liver tissue showed compensatory hypertrophy. Dynamic PET scan revealed altered FDG kinetics in both ligated and non-ligated liver lobes. SUVVOI/SUVCLV significantly increased in both groups of lobes, with a maximal value at the 2nd postoperative day and returned near to the baseline 7 days after the ligation. After PVL, ligated liver lobes showed significantly higher tracer uptake compared to the non-ligated lobes (significantly higher SUVVOI/SUVLiver values were observed at postoperative day 1, 2 and 3). The homogenous tracer biodistribution observed before PVL reappeared by 7th postoperative day. CONCLUSION: The observed alterations in FDG uptake dynamics should be taken into account during the assessment of PET data until the PVL induced atrophic and regenerative processes are completed

    Crohn's Disease and Early Exposure to Domestic Refrigeration

    Environmental risk factors playing a causative role in Crohn's Disease (CD) remain largely unknown. Recently, it has been suggested that refrigerated food could be involved in disease development. We thus conducted a pilot case control study to explore the association of CD with the exposure to domestic refrigeration in childhood.Using a standard questionnaire we interviewed 199 CD cases and 207 age-matched patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as controls. Cases and controls were followed by the same gastroenterologists of tertiary referral clinics in Tehran, Iran. The questionnaire focused on the date of the first acquisition of home refrigerator and freezer. Data were analysed by a multivariate logistic model. The current age was in average 34 years in CD cases and the percentage of females in the case and control groups were respectively 48.3% and 63.7%. Patients were exposed earlier than controls to the refrigerator (X2 = 9.9, df = 3, P = 0.04) and refrigerator exposure at birth was found to be a risk factor for CD (OR = 2.08 (95% CI: 1.01-4.29), P = 0.05). Comparable results were obtained looking for the exposure to freezer at home. Finally, among the other recorded items reflecting the hygiene and comfort at home, we also found personal television, car and washing machine associated with CD.This study supports the opinion that CD is associated with exposure to domestic refrigeration, among other household factors, during childhood

    Fractal dimension of non-network space of a catchment basin

    Topographically convex regions within a catchment basin represent varied degrees of hill-slopes. The nonnetwork space ( M), the characterization of which we address in this letter, is akin to the space that is achieved by subtracting channelized portions contributed due to concave regions from the watershed space ( X). This non-network space is similar to non-channelized convex region within a catchment basin. We propose an alternative shape-dependent quantity like fractal dimension to characterize this non-network space. Towards this goal, we decompose the non-network space in two-dimensional discrete space into simple non-overlapping disks (NODs) of various sizes by employing mathematical morphological transformations and certain logical operations. Furthermore, we plot the number of NODs of less than threshold radius against the radius, and compute the shape-dependent fractal dimension of non-network space
