Aerial Surveys for Cetaceans in the Former Akutan, Alaska, Whaling Grounds
Randomized aerial surveys were flown between 26 July and 26 August 1984 to search for cetaceans in two areas of southwestern Alaska: one on both Bering Sea and Pacific Ocean sides of the Aleutian Islands near the defunct Akutan shore-whaling station, which operated from 1912 through 1938, the other overlapping continental slope and shallow continental shelf waters between the Aleutians and the Pribilof Islands. ... Searches covered about 3940 nautical miles (nm), including some 2403 nm of random transects. Sightings were made of gray whales (10 sightings, 14 individuals), fin whales (3, 11), minke whales (1, 1), unidentified beaked whales (1, 6), Dall's porpoises (47, 131), killer whales (8, 26), and harbor porpoises (4, 7). A Fourier series model was used to estimate density of Dall's porpoises as 115 individuals (CV=0.263) per 1000 sq nm on the whaling grounds and 16.6 individuals (CV=0.0) per sq nm in the Bering Sea north of the whaling grounds. These estimates are comparable to those previously reported for the same general areas (97.2 animals per 1000 sq nm, SD=49.5). There were too few sightings of other cetaceans to permit calculation of meaningful density estimates. At least four species of great whales (blue, fin, humpback and sperm) were sufficiently abundant during the first four decades of this century to support significant whaling activities within about 100 sq nm of Akutan (more than 5300 whales were caught during 23 years of whaling, 1912-39). Although previous studies of the fisheries showed a downward trend in catch per unit of effort and an increase in distance traveled to take whales, whales were still being taken at relatively high rates (0.28-0.51 whales per gross catcher day) at the end of the fishery in 1939. Populations of fin, humpback, blue and sperm whales were probably significantly reduced by shore and pelagic whaling conducted widely in the North Pacific since 1939. ...Key words: aerial surveys, cetaceans, Bering Sea, North Pacific Ocean, historical whaling Des relevés aériens ont été effectués au hasard entre le 26 juillet et le 26 août 1984, afin de déterminer la présence de cétacés dans deux régions du Sud-Ouest de l'Alaska : l'une située des deux côtés des îles Aléoutiennes (du côté de la mer de Béring et du côté de l'océan Pacifique), près de ce qui fut jadis le port baleinier d'Akukan qui resta en opération de 1912 à 1939; l'autre couvrant à la fois les eaux du talus continental et celles, peu profondes, de la plate-forme continentale, entre les îles Aléoutiennes et les îles Pribilof. Les relevés furent effectuées à des altitudes comprises entre 150 et 245 m, d'un appareil d'observation Partenavia P68, muni d'un nez de plexiglas, permettant de voir dans l'axe de déplacement. Les recherches ont été effectuées sur environ 3940 milles nautiques (mn), y compris 2403 mn de recoupements au hasard. One a relevé la présence de baleines grises (10 relevés, 14 individus), de rorquals communs (3, 11), de petits rorquals (1, 1), de baleines à bec non identifiées (1, 6), de marsouins de Dall (47, 131), d'épaulards (8, 26) et de marsouins communs. On a utilisé un modèle en séries de Fourier pour déterminer approximativement la densité de marsouins de Dall à 115 individus (CV = 0.263) aux 1000 mn² dans les zones de pêche à la baleine, et à 16.6 individus (CV = 0.0) aux 1000 mn² dans la mer de Béring au nord des zones de pêche. Ces évaluations sont comparables à celles rapportées précédemment pour ces mêmes zones en général (97.2 animaux aux 1000 mn², DS = 49.5). Trop peu d'autres cétacés ont été aperçus pour justifier le calcul des densités approximatives. Durant les quarante premières années de ce siècle, il y avait au moins quatre espèces de grandes baleines (rorquals bleus, rorquals communs, rorquals à bosse et cachalots) en quantité suffisante pour alimenter une industrie baleinière dans un rayon d'environ 100 mn d'Akutan. (Plus de 5300 baleines furent pêchées durant les 23 années que dura la pêche à la baleine, de 1912 à 1939). Bien que des études précédentes sur la pêche aient montré une tendance à la baisse du nombre de prises par rapport au nombre d'unités d'effort et une augmentation de la distance à parcourir pour capturer les baleines, celles-ci étaient capturées à un taux relativement élevé (de 0.28 à 0.51 baleine par unité d'effort brute par jour) à la fin de la pêche en 1939. Les populations de rorquals communs, de rorquals à bosse, de rorquals bleus et de cachalots ont probablement été réduites de façon significative par le pêche côtière et la pêche pélagique, qui ont été pratiquées à grande échelle dans le Pacifique Nord depuis 1939. Le petit nombre de cétacés aperçus durant les présents relevés porte à croire que les populations dans les zones de pêche et dans leur vicinité, restent peu élevées en raison de ces activités. Decoherence of Atomic Gases in Largely Detuned Laser Fields
We study theoretically the decoherence of a gas of bosonic atoms induced by
the interaction with a largely detuned laser beam. It is shown that for a
standing laser beam decoherence coincides with the single-particle result. For

Drug-mediated shortening of action potentials in LQTS2 hiPSC-cardiomyocytes
Cardiomyocytes (CMs) derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are now a well-established modality for modeling genetic disorders of the heart. This is especially so for long QT syndrome (LQTS), which is caused by perturbation of ion channel function, and can lead to fainting, malignant arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. LQTS2 is caused by mutations in KCNH2, a gene whose protein product contributes to IKr (also known as HERG), which is the predominant repolarizing potassium current in CMs. β-blockers are the mainstay treatment for patients with LQTS, functioning by reducing heart rate and arrhythmogenesis. However, they are not effective in around a quarter of LQTS2 patients, in part, because they do not correct the defining feature of the condition, which is excessively prolonged QT interval. Since new therapeutics are needed, in this report, we biopsied skin fibroblasts from a patient who was both genetically and clinically diagnosed with LQTS2. By producing LQTS-hiPSC-CMs, we assessed the impact of different drugs on action potential duration (APD), which is used as an in vitro surrogate for QT interval. Not surprisingly, the patient's own β-blocker medication, propranolol, had a marginal effect on APD in the LQTS-hiPSC-CMs. However, APD could be significantly reduced by up to 19% with compounds that enhanced the IKr current by direct channel binding or by indirect mediation through the PPARδ/protein 14-3-3 epsilon/HERG pathway. Drug-induced enhancement of an alternative potassium current, IKATP, also reduced APD by up to 21%. This study demonstrates the utility of LQTS-hiPSC-CMs in evaluating whether drugs can shorten APD and, importantly, shows that PPARδ agonists may form a new class of therapeutics for this condition
Gravitational waveforms from a point particle orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole
We numerically solve the inhomogeneous Zerilli-Moncrief and Regge-Wheeler
equations in the time domain. We obtain the gravitational waveforms produced by
a point-particle of mass traveling around a Schwarzschild black hole of
mass M on arbitrary bound and unbound orbits. Fluxes of energy and angular
momentum at infinity and the event horizon are also calculated. Results for
circular orbits, selected cases of eccentric orbits, and parabolic orbits are
presented. The numerical results from the time-domain code indicate that, for
all three types of orbital motion, black hole absorption contributes less than
1% of the total flux, so long as the orbital radius r_p(t) satisfies r_p(t)> 5M

Holographic Meson Melting
The plasma phase at high temperatures of a strongly coupled gauge theory can
be holographically modelled by an AdS black hole. Matter in the fundamental
representation and in the quenched approximation is introduced through
embedding D7-branes in the AdS-Schwarzschild background. Low spin mesons
correspond to the fluctuations of the D7-brane world volume. As is well known
by now, there are two different kinds of embeddings, either reaching down to
the black hole horizon or staying outside of it. In the latter case the
fluctuations of the D7-brane world volume represent stable low spin mesons. In
the plasma phase we do not expect mesons to be stable but to melt at
sufficiently high temperature. We model the late stages of this meson melting
by the quasinormal modes of D7-brane fluctuations for the embeddings that do
reach down to the horizon. The inverse of the imaginary part of the quasinormal
frequency gives the typical relaxation time back to equilibrium of the meson
perturbation in the hot plasma. We briefly comment on the possible application

Anion exchange membrane soil nitrate predicts turfgrass color and yield.
Desirable nitrogen (N) management practices for turfgrass supply sufficient N for high quality turf while limiting excess soil N. Previous studies suggested the potential of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for predicting turfgrass color, quality, or yield. However, these studies suggested a wide range of critical soil nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) values across sample dates. A field experiment, in randomized complete block design with treatments consisting of nine N application rates, was conducted on a mixed species cool-season turfgrass lawn across two growing seasons. Every 2 wk from May to October, turfgrass color was assessed with three different reflectance meters, and soil NO3-N was measured with in situ AEMs. Cate-Nelson models were developed comparing relative reflectance value and yield to AEM desorbed soil NO3-N pooled across all sample dates. These models predicted critical AEM soil NO3-N values from 0. 45 to 1.4 micro g cm-2 d-1. Turf had a low probability of further positive response to AEM soil NO3-N greater than these critical values. These results suggest that soil NO3-N critical values from AEMs may be applicable across sample dates and years and may serve to guide N fertilization to limit excess soil NO3-N
The Proton Spin and Flavor Structure in the Chiral Quark Model
After a pedagogical review of the simple constituent quark model and deep
inelastic sum rules, we describe how a quark sea as produced by the emission of
internal Goldstone bosons by the valence quarks can account for the observed
features of proton spin and flavor structures. Some issues concerning the

Cooling of Neutron Stars with Strong Toroidal Magnetic Fields
We present models of temperature distribution in the crust of a neutron star in the presence of a strong toroidal component superposed to the poloidal component of the magnetic field. The presence of such a toroidal field hinders heat flow toward the surface in a large part of the crust. As a result, the neutron star surface presents two warm regions surrounded by extended cold regions and has a thermal luminosity much lower than in the case the magnetic field is purely poloidal. We apply these models to calculate the thermal evolution of such neutron stars and show that the lowered photon luminosity naturally extends their life-time as detectable thermal X-ray sources
Absolute Proper Motions to B~22.5: IV. Faint, Low Velocity White Dwarfs and the White Dwarf Population Density Law
The reduced proper motion diagram (RPMD) for a complete sample of faint stars
with high accuracy proper motions in the North Galactic Pole field SA57 is
investigated. Eight stars with very large reduced proper motions are identified
as faint white dwarf candidates. We discriminate these white dwarf candidates
from the several times more numerous QSOs based on proper motion and
variability.
We discuss the implausibility that these stars could be any kind of survey
contaminant. If {\it bona fide} white dwarfs, the eight candidates found here
represent a portion of the white dwarf population hitherto uninvestigated by
previous surveys by virtue of the faint magnitudes and low proper motions. The
newly discovered stars suggest a disk white dwarf scaleheight larger than the
values of 250-350 pc typically assumed in assessments of the local white dwarf
density. Both a <V/V_{max}> and a more complex maximum likelihood analysis of
the spatial distribution of our likely thin disk white dwarfs yield
scaleheights of 400-600 pc while at the same time give a reasonable match to
the local white dwarf volume density found in other surveys.
Our results could have interesting implications for white dwarfs as potential
MACHO objects. We can place some direct constraints (albeit weak ones) on the
contribution of halo white dwarfs to the dark matter of the Galaxy. Moreover,
the elevated scale height that we measure for the thin disk could alter the
interpretation of microlensing results to the extent of making white dwarfs
