    THE EFFECT OF ,FATIGUE ON SINGLE-LEG HOP BIOMECHANICS

    The single-leg hop is a commonly-used clinical test for patients with knee pathology (e.g. ACL injury). There is currently little information in the literature regarding the biomechanics of this test. However, studies of drop-landings have shown that substantial extensor moments are needed at the hip, knee and ankle to balance and support the body upon ground contact. (Decker et ai., 2003) Total support moment represents the total extensor pattern of the lower extremity to support the body and has been used previously to measure support and balance strategies during the single-limb stance phase of gait. (Winter et al., 1990) When applied to the single-leg hop, this concept may prove useful in analyzing changes in support strategies due to fatigue or injury.     Motion of the multi-segmented spine in elite dancers during passé and arabesque

    Background The spinal biomechanics of dance tasks have received little study and no studies have used a multi-segmented spinal model. Knowledge of how the segments of the spine move may be useful to the dance clinician and dance educator. Research question What is the direction and amount of motion of the primary segments of the spine in elite dancers during an arabesque and a passé? Methods This observational study examined 59 elite dancers performing an arabesque and a passé using a three-dimensional motion analysis system with the trunk divided into a series of five segments: pelvis, lower lumbar, upper lumbar, lower thoracic and upper thoracic spine. Results For the arabesque, all spinal segments moved in the same direction within each plane and the majority of total spinal motion occurred in the thoracic spine. Thoracic segments were at or near end range position at completion of the arabesque. For the passé, the spinal segments moved in different directions within each plane and the majority of total spinal motion occurred in the lumbar spine. Significance Dance clinicians and dance educators may benefit from the knowledge that thoracic hypomobility in any plane may limit arabesque performance and that attempts to instruct dancers to achieve a position of passé without flexion of the lumbar spine may be a valid aesthetic ideal but also an unrealistic functional expectation

    Flexor-Pronator Mass Training Exercises Selectively Activate Forearm Musculature

    # Purpose/Hypothesis The flexor-pronator mass of the forearm contributes dynamic stability to the medial elbow. Training this muscle group is essential for overhead athletes, however, there is lack of evidence supporting use of training exercises. The purpose of this study was to measure the extent of EMG activity of the flexor pronator musculature during two distinct forearm strengthening exercises using resistance bands. It was hypothesized that two exercises would elicit at least moderate level of muscle activity, but the activation would be different in the pronator versus the flexor muscles. # Materials/Methods 10 healthy subjects (all males, age 36±12 years) were included. Surface EMG activity was measured on three muscles of the dominant-side forearm: flexor carpi ulnaris (FCP), flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), and pronator teres (PT). After measurement of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) for each muscle, subjects performed wrist ulnar deviation and forearm pronation exercises using elastic band resistance. Resistance was set to elicit moderate exertion (5/10 on the Borg CR10 scale). Order of exercise was randomized and three repetitions of each exercise were performed. Mean peak EMG activity in each muscle across repetitions during the eccentric phase of each exercise was calculated and expressed as a percentage of MVC. Moderate level of activity was defined as 21% of MVC or higher. Peak normalized EMG activity in each muscle was compared using two-way (exercise x muscle) repeated-measures ANOVA with post-hoc pairwise comparisons if a significant interaction was found. # Results There was an exercise by muscle interaction effect (p\<0.001). The ulnar deviation exercise selectively activated FCU (40.3%) versus FDS (19.5%, p=0.009) and PT (21.5%, p=0.022). Conversely, the pronation exercise selectively activated FDS (63.8%, p=0.002) and PT (73.0%, p=0.001) versus FDS (27.4%). # Conclusion The ulnar deviation and pronation exercises using elastic band resistance studied targeted and activated the flexor-pronator mass musculature. The ulnar deviation and pronation exercises using elastic band resistance are practical and effective means of training the flexor-pronator mass. These exercises can be readily prescribed to athletes and patients as part of their arm care program

    Multi-segment spine range of motion in dancers with and without recent low back pain

    Background Altered spine kinematics are a common in people with LBP. This may be especially true for populations such as dancers, who are required to perform repetitive movements of the spine, although this remains unclear. Research question Do dancers with recent LBP display altered spine kinematics compared to their asymptomatic counterparts? Methods A cross-sectional study of multi-segment spine kinematics was performed. Forty-seven pre-professional and professional female dancers either with LBP in the past two months (n = 26) or no LBP in the past 12 months (n = 21) participated. Range of motion (ROM) during standing side bending, seated rotation, and walking gait were compared. Results Female dancers with LBP displayed reduced upper lumbar transverse plane ROM in seated rotation (Effect Size (ES)= −0.61, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): −1.20, 0.02, p = 0.04), as well as reduced lower lumbar transverse plane ROM (ES=−0.65, 95% CI: −1.24, −0.06, p = 0.03) in gait. However, there was increased lower thoracic transverse plane ROM (ES = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.04, 1.21, p = 0.04) during gait. No differences in the frontal plane were observed. Significance Altered transverse plane spine kinematics were evident in dancers with recent LBP for select segments and tasks. This may reflect a protective movement strategy. However, as the effect sizes of observed differences were moderate, and the total number of differences between groups was small, collectively, it seems only subtle differences in spine kinematics differentiate dancers with LBP to dancers without
