Georgia Public School Board Members Beliefs Concerning the Inclusion of Creationism in the Science Curriculum
Data analysis indicated that School Board Members’ beliefs regarding school board members in YEC had a positive correlation and beliefs in OEC had a negative correlation with the permitted inclusion of creationism in the district science curriculum. However, no correlation was found between school board member beliefs in YEC/OEC and the required inclusion of creationism. The results of this study provide insight into connections between beliefs of board members and the science/creationism issue which may translate into enlightened voting decisions
The Relationship between the Beliefs of School Board Members Concerning Young Earth Creationism and Old Earth Creationism and the Inclusion of Creationism in the Science Curriculum of Georgia Public Schools
This study investigated district location and the beliefs of school board members regarding Young Earth Creationism (YEC) and Old Earth Creationism (OEC) associated with the inclusion or exclusion of creationism in the district science curriculum of Georgia public schools. A random sampling of 144 mailed of a total population of 1,034 local school board members was selected as subjects. Data analysis indicated that beliefs of school board members in Young Earth Creationism had a weak, positive association with the permitted inclusion of creationism in the district science curriculum while board member beliefs in OEC had a moderate, negative relationship. No association was found between board member beliefs in either Young Earth Creationism or Old Earth Creationism and the required inclusion of creationism in district creationism in Georgia public schools. Concerning district location (rural, urban, or suburban) and the permitted or mandatory inclusion of creationism, no relationship was found. The results of this study provide insight into connections between beliefs of board members and the inclusion of creationism, which may translate into enlightened voting decisions

reputation and other information on trust from a range of theories and we devise an experiment that allows for testing these hypotheses simultaneously. We focus on the following mechanisms: learning, imitation, social comparison, and control. The results show that actors learn particularly from their own past experiences. Epithelial cell-directed efferocytosis in the post-partum mammary gland is necessary for tissue homeostasis and future lactation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mammary glands harbor a profound burden of apoptotic cells (ACs) during post-lactational involution, but little is known regarding mechanisms by which ACs are cleared from the mammary gland, or consequences if this process is interrupted. We investigated AC clearance, also termed efferocytosis, during post-lactational remodeling, using mice deficient for MerTK, Axl, and Tyro3, three related receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) regulating macrophage-mediated efferocytosis in monocytes. MerTK expression, apoptosis and the accumulation of apoptotic debris were examined in histological sections of MerTK-deficient, Axl/Tyro3-deficient, and wild-type mammary glands harvested at specific time points during lactation and synchronized involution. The ability of primary mammary epithelial cells (MECs) to engulf ACs was assessed in culture. Transplant of MerTK-deficient mammary epithelium into cleared WT mammary fat pads was used to assess the contribution of WT mammary macrophages to post-lactational efferocytosis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>ACs induced MerTK expression in MECs, resulting in elevated MerTK levels at the earliest stages of involution. Loss of MerTK resulted in AC accumulation in post-lactational MerTK-deficient mammary glands, but not in Axl and Tyro3-deficient mammary glands. Increased vascularization, fibrosis, and epithelial hyperproliferation were observed in MerTK-deficient mammary glands through at least 60 days post-weaning, due to failed efferocytosis after lactation, but did not manifest in nulliparous mice. WT host-derived macrophages failed to rescue efferocytosis in transplanted MerTK-deficient mammary epithelium.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Efferocytosis by MECs through MerTK is crucial for mammary gland homeostasis and function during the post-lactational period. Efferocytosis by MECs thus limits pathologic consequences associated with the apoptotic load following lactation.</p
Levetiracetam-loaded biodegradable polymer implants in the tetanus toxin model of temporal lobe epilepsy in rats
Approximately one-third of people with epilepsy receive insufficient benefit from currently available anticonvulsant medication, and some evidence suggests that this may be due to a lack of effective penetration into brain parenchyma. The current study investigated the ability of biodegradable polymer implants loaded with levetiracetam to ameliorate seizures following implantation above the motor cortex in the tetanus toxin model of temporal lobe epilepsy in rats. The implants led to significantly shorter seizures and a trend towards fewer seizures for up to 1 week. The results of this study indicate that drug-eluting polymer implants represent a promising evolving treatment option for intractable epilepsy. Future research is warranted to investigate issues of device longevity and implantation site
Three Dimensional Distorted Black Holes
We present three-dimensional, {\it non-axisymmetric} distorted black hole
initial data which generalizes the axisymmetric, distorted, non-rotating
[Bernstein93a] and rotating [Brandt94a] single black hole data developed by
Bernstein, Brandt, and Seidel. These initial data should be useful for studying
the dynamics of fully 3D, distorted black holes, such as those created by the
spiraling coalescence of two black holes. We describe the mathematical
construction of several families of such data sets, and show how to construct
numerical solutions. We survey quantities associated with the numerically
constructed solutions, such as ADM masses, apparent horizons, measurements of

ErbB4/HER4: Role in Mammary Gland Development, Differentiation and Growth Inhibition
The ErbB receptor tyrosine kinase family has often been associated with increased growth of breast epithelial cells, as well as malignant transformation and progression. In contrast, ErbB4/HER4 exhibits unique attributes from a two step proteolytic cleavage which releases an 80 kilodalton, nuclear localizing, tyrosine kinase to a signal transduction mechanism that slows growth and stimulates differentiation of breast cells. This review provides an overview of ErbB4/HER4 in growth and differentiation of the mammary epithelium, including its physiologic role in development, the contrasting growth inhibition/tumor suppression and growth acceleration of distinct ErbB4/HER4 isoforms and a description of the unique cell cycle regulated pattern of nuclear HER4 ubiquitination and destruction
Finding Apparent Horizons in Dynamic 3D Numerical Spacetimes
We have developed a general method for finding apparent horizons in 3D
numerical relativity. Instead of solving for the partial differential equation
describing the location of the apparent horizons, we expand the closed 2D
surfaces in terms of symmetric trace--free tensors and solve for the expansion
coefficients using a minimization procedure. Our method is applied to a number
of different spacetimes, including numerically constructed spacetimes
containing highly distorted axisymmetric black holes in spherical coordinates,
