The location of farmsteads and petty gentry villages in the poviat of Gniezno at the turn of the 15th century (Summary) The farmsteads and petty gentry villages of the poviat of Gniezno situated in Kalisz voivodeship are concentrated in three main areas. The first and, at the same time, the largest such concentration was found in the territory located south of Gniezno – on a strip between Gniezno, Witkowo and Czerniejewo. The second was situated in the west of the poviat (Popowo, Łubowo parishes), whereas the last, small, complex comprised several villages in the parish of Trląg. The chronological scope of the study covered the years from the turn of the 15th century, while the source base was constituted by court records regarding the lands of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska), as well as the “Liber beneficiorum of the archidiosece of Gniezno” by Jan Łaski and – for comparative purposes – the 16th-century tax registers. The villages were divided into parts, each provided with a binomial name – the first component being the proper name of the village, whereas the second was derived from a nickname or a name of its owner – heir. The farmstead villages inhabited by yeomen included: Grzybowo (initially an independent parish, later belonging to the parish in Gozdowo) consisting in the 15th century of 13 divisions, Małachowo – sources inform of 6 existing divisions of this village; Jelitowo – with 2 divisions; Żółcz with 2 divisions; Cielmowo 5 divisions; Mikołajewice – 3 divisions; Drachowo – 5 divisions; and Bojenice, Skiereszewo and Gurowo. Nearby the above enlisted farmstead villages one could also encounter petty gentry villages managed by single peasants (e.g. Gulczewo). Local heirs often were owners of divisions in the neighbouring villages. The petty gentry and farmstead villages in the poviat of Gniezno were inhabited by noblemen of various coats of arms, with the only exception of Strzyżewo, where the landowners were the noblemen of the Poraj coat of arms. In the vicinity of Gniezno it is possible to come across numerous names of no longer existing settlements. It is a direct result of partition of those villages – quite commonly the source name of a village was constituted by the name of a division absorbed in time by its mother village. The 15th and 16th centuries constituted the period of the most intense division of petty gentry and farmstead villages in the poviat of Gniezno

The article discusses the issue of noble towns in the area of Nakielski poviat in the Middle Ages. The elaboration presents urbanization of this area and the related issues concerning the process of embedment of towns within private goods, difining the variants of town rights and formulating and functioning of the local self -government .Attention was also paid to town as one of the components of a noble property and the subject of transactions and family divisions.

Phage display-selected peptides for binding and synthesis of nanoparticles: ZnO as an example

    Get PDF
Nanoparticles of metal oxides are widely used in bionanotechnology, particularly in bio-medical applications; e.g., construction of biosensors, separation of biological materials, molecular imaging, and anticancer and antimicrobial therapies. However, synthesis of these nanoparticles using physico-chemical methods is problematic, because such procedures require high-temperature processes and harsh chemical treatments. The use of peptides specifically binding particular nanoparticles or nanostructures and facilitating their synthesis appears to be an encouraging alternative. Specific peptides capable of such reactions may be identified with the use of the phage display method. In this mini-review, zinc oxide is discussed as an exemple material whose nanoparticles can be bound and synthesized by such peptides exposed on the surface of bacteriophage capsids. An analysis of reports on studies into methods of peptide-aided synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles has indicated that, despite the encouraging results obtained so far, further studies are necessary to optimize such procedures. This may also be true for nanoparticles of other materials, particularly metal oxides

Four lytic phages, vB_KpnP_BIS33, vB_KpnP_IL33, and vB_KpnP_PRA33 of the Podoviridae family and vB_KpnM_BIS47 of the Myoviridae family, which act against animal-pathogenic Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, were isolated from sewage plants in Poland. They possess double-stranded DNA genomes of 41,697 bp, 41,335 bp, 40,605 bp, and 147,443 bp, respectively

Here, we present the 5.168-Mbp draft genome sequence of Shewanella baltica M1, the first Shewanella strain from the Gulf of Gdańsk to have its genome sequenced and annotated. The availability of the genome sequence of strain M1 will promote further global analyses of bacterial stress responses in the unique Gulf of Gdan´ sk ecosystem

Expression pattern of ISL-1, TTF-1 and PAX5 in olfactory neuroblastoma

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare neoplasm of the sinonasal area with neuroendocrine differentiation. ISL-1, TTF-1 and PAX5 are transcription factors that are frequently upregulated in tumors showing neuroendocrine differentiation. The aim of our study was to evaluate these markers in a group of ONBs. We included 11 ONBs from 4 large university hospitals. Immunohistochemical expression of TTF-1, PAX5 and ISL-1 was evaluated. TTF-1, ISL-1 and PAX5 were expressed in 3/11 cases (27.27%, h-score: 3-45), 7/11 cases (63.64%, h-score: 23-200), and in 3/11 cases (27.77%, h-score 3-85), respectively. The patient with the strongest PAX5 reactivity exhibited an aggressive clinical course with rapid dissemination to the spine and death shortly after the diagnosis. No significant correlation in the expression of PAX5 and TTF-1 (ρ = 0.43; p = 0.18) was observed. ISL-1 is widely expressed in tumors with neuroendocrine differentiation and therefore of limited value in their differential diagnosis. TTF-1 positivity does not exclude the diagnosis of primary ONB, although usually only a small percentage of cells are positive. PAX5 expression is infrequent (27.27%) in ONB; however, if present it can be associated with a very aggressive clinical course
