Evaluation of the Short Grit Scale (GRIT-S) with Latinx College Students

    Get PDF
In the current study, the psychometric properties of a measure of psychological grit among 344 Latinx college students was investigated. Researchers used confirmatory factor analysis to validate a previously identified two-factor model of the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S). Internal consistency was acceptable as measured by coefficient alpha. A two-factor model of Grit-S had a good model fit with the data. A discussion regarding the importance of these findings is provided and implications for counselors and researchers are offered

In the current study, we investigated the psychometric properties of two meaningful measures of support from teachers and school counselors among Latina/o students. Examining factorial stability with diverse populations is important to make sure that measures provide valid information about constructs of teacher or counselor support. While researchers have provided evidence of reliability (i.e., consistency), no study has examined validity (e.g., accuracy) of Teacher Support Scale Revised (TSSR) with Latina/o students. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses (CFA and EFA) methods were used to evaluate structural validity of the TSSR and School Counselor Support Scale (SCSS). Two different models of the TSSR were analyzed. Findings from multiple CFAs showed that five-factor 22-item of the TSSR had an acceptable model fit. A parallel analysis and EFA were run to determine the factorial structure of the SCSS. Findings indicated that the SCSS had three factors explaining 68% of the variance in the model. The results and implications for research and practice in Latina/o students were discussed

In the current study, we investigated the psychometric properties of a meaningful measure of career development among Latina/o students. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to evaluate structural validity of the Vocational Outcome Expectations scale. The results supported a modest one-factor structure for the VOE scale. Internal consistency was good as measured by coefficient alpha. Findings provide support for the reliability and validity of the VOE with Latina/o students. A discussion regarding the usefulness of this measure of career development is provided

A preliminary development and validation of the Translingual Disposition Questionnaire with Latinx students

Current scholarship on translingual pedagogies focus on writer’s translingual strategies and practices. While scholarship explores translingual assessment practices, there is limited quantitative research on how we can measure students’ translingual dispositions. This article examines factor structure of a Translingual Disposition Questionnaire to measure students’ metalinguistic awareness as it relates to translingual dispositions (N = 281). Using Parallel Analysis and Exploratory Factor Analysis, three factors that measure translingual dispositions were retained. With the increase of linguistically diverse students in higher education, a translingual dispositions instrument can assist educators in designing linguistically inclusive assignments and assessments that respond to students’ translingual identities, realities, and practices. Additionally, the instrument can also be used to explore how translingual dispositions are linked to students’ sense of belonging in higher education, academic success, self-efficacy, acculturation, and rhetorical writing abilities. Implications for translingual practices and for future research on translingual dispositions are discussed

Includes bibliographical references. As a part of facilities management (FM), building maintenance activities occupy a significant role in reaching the goal of delivering an acceptable level of performance while minimizing costs and failures. For institutional organizations, an effective FM approach is required to ensure their buildings function properly. Historical work order data may potentially include a substantial value for assessing the condition of building systems by helping to identify common maintenance activities. This study conducts a preliminary analysis of historical work order data collected from six educational institutions in the State of Colorado and Connecticut in the United States between 2008 and 2018

Exploring the Mediating Role of Depression and Positive Orientation in the Relationship between Positive Psychological Factors and Aggression among Turkish College Students

    No full text
The current study was designed based on the life balance areas of positive orientation and depression. General mattering and life satisfaction are important positive psychological factors for individuals. The purpose of the study was to investigate both theoretical and empirical gaps in our knowledge of whether general mattering and life satisfaction, which are positive psychology elements, predict aggression among college students. Turkish college students (n = 1467) participated in the study. The results revealed life satisfaction and general mattering had direct effects on positive orientation and indirect effects on depression and aggression. Positive orientation and depression were significant mediators between positive psychology factors and aggression. In this sense, the current study serves the science-practitioner model with the implications for research and practice

Effect of apple fibre on textural and relaxation properties of wheat chips dough

    No full text
In this study, the effect of apple fibre with different levels of fibres (5, 10, 15 and 20%) was investigated on viscoelastic nature and the textural properties of wheat chips dough using stress relaxation test and texture profile analysis. Apple fibre addition changed the stress relaxation properties of wheat dough, depending on fibre concentration. Increase in the fibre concentration increased resistance of the dough samples to the deformation by increasing their elasticity. Hardness and gumminess values increased while springiness, cohesiveness and resilience values decreased as apple fibre level increased. Significant correlations were found between stress relaxation and texture profile analysis parameters. In order to describe the effect of apple fibre on the viscoelastic properties of wheat dough, generalised Maxwell, Nussinovitch and Peleg models were fitted to experimental stress relaxation data. All three models were found to be efficient in describing the stress-relaxation behaviour of wheat dough; but, the Maxwell model was the most effective. In addition, power-law and exponential functions were successfully used to describe the effect of apple fibre concentration on the constants related with stress relaxation data and textural parameters. In this study, the effect of apple fibre with different levels of fibres (5, 10, 15 and 20%) was investigated on viscoelastic nature and the textural properties of wheat chips dough using stress relaxation test and texture profile analysis. Our objective was to identify the distribution of cytogenetic abnormalities of 175 Turkish women with primary amenorrhea (PA) or premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). A retrospective study was performed using medical records of 94 patients with PA and 81 patients with POI at the Genetics Department, Zeynep Kamil Women's and Children's Research and Training Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey. G-banded metaphase kaiyotype analysis were prepared and analyzed. Chromosomal abnormalities were present in 44 of 175 cases (25%). 15 were full blown or mosaic numerical X chromosome abnormalities (8.5%), 10 were full blown or mosaic X-chromosome structural anomalies (5.7%), one was X-autosome translocation (0.5%), 3 were autosomal anomalies (1.7%), 12 were XY kaiyotype (6.8%), one was 45,X/46,XY mosaic and 2 were full blown or mosaic structural anomalies of Y chromosome (1.7%). The prevalence of chromosomal abnormalities was 25% in this large series of Turkish women with primary amenorrhea or premature ovarian insufficiency, most cases involving X-aneuploidy or X-structural abnormalities or 46,XY karyotype. High prevalence of chromosomal abnormalities is associated with POI starting at an early age (average age: 26 years). (C) 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved
