    Get PDF
A Salmonella ovarian abscess is a rare entity, and is similarly uncommon in cases with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. To the best of our knowledge, thirty four cases of Salmonella ovarian abscess have been published in the literature, and only four of them were related to Systemic Lupus Eritematosus. Our aim is to review this clinical entity using information from our own experience as well as that from published cases. © 2020, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. All rights reserved

Aim: To evaluate the effect of local anesthesia types on erectile function during transrectal ultrasound guided biopsy (TRUS-Bx).Material and Methods: Between February 2014 and February 2015, 50 men who underwent TRUS-Bx at our institution were included in this prospective study. The 50 patients were randomized and divided into two groups according to the type of anesthesia used. All patients were asked to indicate the level of pain experienced on a visual analogue scale (VAS) 10 min after the TRUS biopsy. All patients had to fill in the IIEF standardized questionnaire. Groups were evaluated in terms of pre-biopsy IEFF score (IIEF-1), post-biopsy 1st month IIEF score (IIEF-2) and post-biopsy 2nd month IIEF score (IIEF -3). Patient characteristics, mean VAS score and IIEF score were compared between the two groups. Results: The mean age,IIEF-1,tPSA level, prostate volume and VAS score were 60.86±0.95 years,18.68,6.81±0.54 ng/ml,51.10±3.82 cc and 3.5±0.26 in all patients, respectively. The difference in VAS scores between the groups was statistically significant (p<0.05). In Group 1 the IIEF-1, IIEF-2, and IIEF-3 were different from each other statistically. There was no statistically significant difference between IIEF-1 and IIEF-3 scores in group 2(p=0,136 z=-1,492).So it was observed that the initial IIEF scores were reached at the end of the second month in group 2 administered 12.5 g 2% lidocaine HCl jel. Conclusion: Our study indicates that although local periprostatic anesthesia by injecting 6 ml of 2% lidocaine provides more effective anesthesia for pain relief, intrarectal 12.5g 2% lidocaine HCl jel maintains less impact on erectile dysfunction for TRUS-Bx

Inclusive Search for Anomalous Production of High-pT Like-Sign Lepton Pairs in Proton-Antiproton Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV

We report on a search for anomalous production of events with at least two charged, isolated, like-sign leptons with pT > 11 GeV/c using a 107 pb^-1 sample of 1.8 TeV ppbar collisions collected by the CDF detector. We define a signal region containing low background from Standard Model processes. To avoid bias, we fix the final cuts before examining the event yield in the signal region using control regions to test the Monte Carlo predictions. We observe no events in the signal region, consistent with an expectation of 0.63^(+0.84)_(-0.07) events. We present 95% confidence level limits on new physics processes in both a signature-based context as well as within a representative minimal supergravity (tanbeta = 3) model.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Numerical prediction of short-cut flows in gas-solid reverse flow cyclone separators

The effect of operational and geometrical parameters on the short-cut flow in cyclone separators has been investigated computationally using the Reynolds stress model (RSM). The motion of solid particles in the flow field was simulated using the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with one way discrete phase method (DPM). Eleven cyclones with different cone tip diameters, vortex finder lengths and diameters were studied and the simulation results were analyzed in terms of velocity fields, pressure drops, cut-off diameters and short-cut flows. The numerical simulation was verified with the published experimental results. The results obtained demonstrate that all three parameters, particularly, vortex finder diameter, have significant effects on the cut-off diameter (collection efficiency), the short-cut flow and the pressure drop

THE IMPACT OF EXTERNAL SHOCKS ON TOURISM SECTOR: THE CASE OF TURKEY

The objective of this study is to assess the temporal impacts on Turkey\u27s tourist arrivals. An econometric strategy is selected to determine the existence of unit roots in data series containing the quarterly number of tourist arrivals between 1993:1 and 2005:3. The present study finds that the data series contain deterministic trend and seasonal components together with detected structural changes. Hence any form of exogenous shocks, will not have permanent impact on Turkey\u27s tourist arrivals

Antibacterial activity of some lichen extracts

The aqueous and ethanol extracts prepared from some lichens species were evaluated for antibacterial activity against six standard strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis) and two environmental strains (Aeromonas) that were isolated from different lakes. The aqueous and ethanol extracts showed a variable range of antibacterial activity to both standard strains and environmental strains. Ethanol extracts showed better antibacterial activity than aqueus extracts. It was found that the inhibition zone of tested bacteria against extracts have changed between 07 - 15 mm (diameter of inhibition zone). Some lichen extracts have moderate antibacterial effect. Both ethanol and aqueous extracts have inhibited the growth of three bacteria. Neither aqueous extracts nor ethanol extracts were inhibited the growth of five bacteria. The aqueous extract of Peltigera polydactyla and the ethanol extract of the Ramalina farinacea exhibited potent antibacterial activities

Modafinil-induced ventricular arrhythmia: A case report

    No full text
Modafinil is a central nervous system stimulant that promotes wakefulness and is approved for the treatment of narcolepsy and several other conditions. However, there is a big concern about drug abuse, especially among students to enhance cognitive performance and to reduce the need for sleep. In this case report, we present a 23-year-old female admitted to the cardiology outpatient clinic owing to recurrent palpitations. She stated that she started modafinil 100 mg twice a day one month earlier to increase performance while studying for her exams. Her electrocardiogram (ECG) demonstrated sinus rhythm and a right bundle branch block (RBBB). No structural heart disease or metabolic pathology was detected. A 24-hour ambulatory ECG record showed 11 attacks of non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT), the longest of which was eight beats. The drug was discontinued and two weeks later, the patient was symptom-free, and her control ECG showed normal sinus rhythm with no RBBB. A control ambulatory ECG was performed, and no ventricular tachycardia was observed. Modafinil, which is considered safer than amphetamine derivatives in terms of cardiovascular side effects, rarely causes serious arrhythmic events, even in healthy subjects. Thus, we suggest evaluating patients for cardiac symptoms after starting on modafinil, and they should be also interrogated regarding the abuse of this drug

Intra-Industry Trade between Turkey and OECD Countries: A Panel Data Analysis

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present paper is to measure the extent of Turkey’s bilateral intra-industry trade (IIT) with OECD countries, and to test empirically various country-specific hypotheses concerning the determinants of IIT between Turkey and its 28 trade partners in OECD group. The findings reveal that Turkey generally posseses an upward trend and relatively high degree of IIT with these countries. Using panel data the empirical results show that IIT between Turkey and OECD countries are positively related to the country-specific variables, such as per capita income level and economic size, and negatively related to the geographical distance. In contrast to the findings of the much of the IIT studies, the variable of economic integration appears to have decreasing effect on IIT between two sides
