Universal saturation of electron dephasing in three-dimensional disordered metals
We have systematically investigated the low-temperature electron dephasing
times in more than 40 three-dimensional polycrystalline impure
metals with distinct material characteristics. In all cases, a saturation of
the dephasing time is observed below about a (few) degree(s) Kelvin, depending
on samples. The value of the saturated dephasing time [] falls basically in the range 0.005 to 0.5 ns for
all samples. Particularly, we find that scales with the electron
diffusion constant as , with close to or
slightly larger than 1, for over two decades of from about 0.1 to 10
cm/s. Our observation suggests that the saturation behavior of
is universal and intrinsic in three-dimensional polycrystalline impure metals.
A complete theoretical explanation is not yet available.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figure
Knowledge-based monitoring of the pointing control system on the Hubble space telescope
A knowledge-based system for the real time monitoring of telemetry data from the Pointing and Control System (PCS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) that enables the retention of design expertise throughout the three decade project lifespan by means other than personnel and documentation is described. The system will monitor performance, vehicle status, success or failure of various maneuvers, and in some cases diagnose problems and recommend corrective actions using a knowledge base built using mission scenarios and the more than 4,500 telemetry monitors from the HST
Accountability and Relationship-Definition Among Food Banks Partnerships
Food pantries typically operate in a partnership structure where they are primarily supported by a larger food bank. However, the ability to execute that mission through cooperative arrangements greatly depends upon accountability, a key dynamic that ensures partners are fulfilling expectations and key roles. This exploratory study utilizes qualitative interview data (n = 61) from a large food bank network to understand the extent to which a lead agency (i.e., a large food bank) meets expectations of accountability among partners. The interview results demonstrate that the extent to which expectations are met relate to different types of relationships between the lead agency and partner members. Furthermore, the ways in which partners assess the strengths or weaknesses of the food bank’s accountability reveal different types of relationships within the network, namely that of supplier–customer, supporter–customer, and supporter–collaborator
Mass Spectra of N=2 Supersymmetric SU(n) Chern-Simons-Higgs Theories
An algebraic method is used to work out the mass spectra and symmetry
breaking patterns of general vacuum states in N=2 supersymmetric SU(n)
Chern-Simons-Higgs systems with the matter fields being in the adjoint
representation. The approach provides with us a natural basis for fields, which
will be useful for further studies in the self-dual solutions and quantum
corrections. As the vacuum states satisfy the SU(2) algebra, it is not
surprising to find that their spectra are closely related to that of angular
momentum addition in quantum mechanics. The analysis can be easily generalized
to other classical Lie groups.Comment: 17 pages, use revte
Nonmagnetic impurity perturbation to the quasi-two-dimensional quantum helimagnet LiCu2O2
A complete phase diagram of Zn substituted quantum quasi-two-dimensional
helimagnet LiCu2O2 has been presented. Helical ordering transition temperature
(T_h) of the original LiCu2O2 follows finite size scaling for less than ~ 5.5%
Zn substitution, which implies the existence of finite helimagnetic domains
with domain boundaries formed with nearly isolated spins. Higher Zn
substitution > 5.5% quenches the long-range helical ordering and introduces an
intriguing Zn level dependent magnetic phase transition with slight thermal
hysteresis and a universal quadratic field dependence for T_c (Zn > 0.055,H).
The magnetic coupling constants of nearest-neighbor (nn) J1 and
next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) J2 (alpha=J2/J1) are extracted from high
temperature series expansion (HTSE) fitting and N=16 finite chain exact
diagonalization simulation. We have also provided evidence of direct
correlation between long-range helical spin ordering and the magnitude of
electric polarization in this spin driven multiferroic material
The Chern-Simons Coefficient in Supersymmetric Non-abelian Chern-Simons Higgs Theories
By taking into account the effect of the would be Chern-Simons term, we
calculate the quantum correction to the Chern-Simons coefficient in
supersymmetric Chern-Simons Higgs theories with matter fields in the
fundamental representation of SU(n). Because of supersymmetry, the corrections
in the symmetric and Higgs phases are identical. In particular, the correction
is vanishing for N=3 supersymmetric Chern-Simons Higgs theories. The result
should be quite general, and have important implication for the more
interesting case when the Higgs is in the adjoint representation.Comment: more references and explanation about rgularization dpendence are

Influence of Specific Contributing Area algorithms on slope failure prediction in landslide modeling
International audienceThis study anatomized algorithm effects of specific contributing area (SCA) on soil wetness estimation, consequently landslide prediction, in SHALSTAB. A subtropical mountainous catchment during three typhoon invasions is targeted. The peak 2-day rainfall intensity of the three typhoons: Haitang, Mindulle and Herb are 144, 248 and 327 mm/day, respectively. We use modified success rate (MSR) to retrieve the most satisfying mean condition for model parameters in SHALSTAB at three rainfall intensities and respective pre-typhoon NDVI themes. Simulation indicates that algorithm affects the prediction of landslide susceptibility (i.e. FS, Factor of Safety) significantly. Based on fixed NDVI and the mean condition, we simulate by using full scale rainfall intensity from 0 to 1200 mm/day. Simulations show that predicted unstable area coverage increases non-linearly as rainfall intensity increases for all algorithms yet with different increasing trends. Compared to Dinf, D8 always gives lower coverage of predicted unstable area during three typhoons. By contrast, FD8 gives higher coverage areas. The absolute difference (compared to Dinf) in predicted unstable area ranges from ~?3% to +4% (percent watershed area). The relative difference (compared to Dinf) ranges from ?15% to as high as +40%. The maximum absolute and relative differences in unstable area prediction occur around the condition of 100?300 mm/day, which is common in subtropical mountainous region. Theoretical relationship among slope, rainfall intensity, SCA and FS value was derived in which FS values are very sensitive to algorithms in the field of slope from 37 to 52degree. Results imply any comparison among SCA-related landslide models or engineering application of rainfall return period analysis must base on the same algorithm to obtain comparable results. This study clarifies the SCA algorithm effect on FS prediction and deepens our understanding on landslide modeling
The ideal gas as an urn model: derivation of the entropy formula
The approach of an ideal gas to equilibrium is simulated through a
generalization of the Ehrenfest ball-and-box model. In the present model, the
interior of each box is discretized, {\it i.e.}, balls/particles live in cells
whose occupation can be either multiple or single. Moreover, particles
occasionally undergo random, but elastic, collisions between each other and
against the container walls. I show, both analitically and numerically, that
the number and energy of particles in a given box eventually evolve to an
equilibrium distribution which, depending on cell occupations, is binomial
or hypergeometric in the particle number and beta-like in the energy.
Furthermore, the long-run probability density of particle velocities is
Maxwellian, whereas the Boltzmann entropy exactly reproduces the
ideal-gas entropy. Besides its own interest, this exercise is also relevant for
pedagogical purposes since it provides, although in a simple case, an explicit
probabilistic foundation for the ergodic hypothesis and for the maximum-entropy
principle of thermodynamics. For this reason, its discussion can profitably be
included in a graduate course on statistical mechanics.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
