    PSO based Neural Networks vs. Traditional Statistical Models for Seasonal Time Series Forecasting

    Seasonality is a distinctive characteristic which is often observed in many practical time series. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are a class of promising models for efficiently recognizing and forecasting seasonal patterns. In this paper, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) approach is used to enhance the forecasting strengths of feedforward ANN (FANN) as well as Elman ANN (EANN) models for seasonal data. Three widely popular versions of the basic PSO algorithm, viz. Trelea-I, Trelea-II and Clerc-Type1 are considered here. The empirical analysis is conducted on three real-world seasonal time series. Results clearly show that each version of the PSO algorithm achieves notably better forecasting accuracies than the standard Backpropagation (BP) training method for both FANN and EANN models. The neural network forecasting results are also compared with those from the three traditional statistical models, viz. Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA), Holt-Winters (HW) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The comparison demonstrates that both PSO and BP based neural networks outperform SARIMA, HW and SVM models for all three time series datasets. The forecasting performances of ANNs are further improved through combining the outputs from the three PSO based models.Comment: 4 figures, 4 tables, 31 references, conference proceeding

    Independence and property in Kant's Rechtslehre

    I argue that the freedom which is to coexist with the freedom of choice of others in accordance with a universal law mentioned in Kant's Rechtslehre is not itself freedom of choice. Rather, it is the independence which is a condition of being able to exercise genuine free choice by not having to act in accordance with the choices of others. Kant's distinction between active and passive citizenship appears, however, to undermine this idea of independence, because the possession of a certain type of property right on the part of some citizens makes it possible for them to dominate others. Kant's account of property in this way turns out to be central to the question as to whether his Rechtslehre represents an internally consistent account of how freedom can be guaranteed within a legal and political community. I go on to argue that Kant's attempt to justify a pre-political right of property cannot be viewed as a successful justification of private property, and that he should have abandoned the notion of such a right together with any presumption in favour of private property

    Transient dynamics of laminated beams: an evaluation with a higher-order refined theory

    A higher-order refined model with seven degrees of freedom per node and cubic axial, quadratic transverse shear and linear transverse normal strain components is presented for the transient dynamic analysis of composite and sandwich beams. This shear correction coefficient free theory considers each layer of the beam to be in a state of plane stress. A special lumping scheme is employed for the evaluation of the diagonal mass matrix and a central difference predictor scheme is used to solve the dynamic equilibrium equation. The excellent performance of the higher-order model in comparison with the first-order theory is clearly brought out through numerical experiments

    Free vibration of higher-order sandwich and composite arches, Part I: formulation

    A higher-order refined model with seven degrees of freedom per node is presented in this paper for the free vibration analysis of composite and sandwich arches. The strain field is modeled through cubic axial, cubic transverse shear and linear transverse normal strain components. As the cross-sectional warping is accurately modeled by this theory, it does not require any shear correction factor. The stress-strain relationship is derived from an orthotropic lamina in a three-dimensional state of stress. The proposed higher-order formulation is validated, in this first part, through arches with various curvatures, aspect ratios, boundary conditions and materials
