    Orbital Ordering in ferromagnetic Lu2V2O7

We have observed the orbital ordering in the ferromagnetic Mott-insulator Lu2V2O7 by the polarized neutron diffraction technique. The orbital ordering pattern determined from the observed magnetic form factors can be explained in terms of a linear combination of wave functions |yz>, |zx> and |xy>; |0> = (1/3)^(1/2) |xy> + (1/3)^(1/2)|yz> + (1/3)^(1/2) |zx> which is proportional to |(x + y + z)^2 - r^2>; where each orbital is extended toward the center-of-mass of the V tetrahedron. We discuss the stability of the ferromagnetic Lu2V2O7, using a Hubbard Hamiltonian with these three orbitals.Comment: 17pages. to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 74 (2005

High Accuracy and Automatic Measurement of the Pattern Linewidth on Very Large Scale Integrated Circuits

    Get PDF
High accuracy measurement of pattern linewidth is particularly important in Very Large Scale Integrated Circuits (VLSI) manufacturing. The measurement of pattern linewidth has been done by optical methods. However, the optical methods have several problems: as the measured value depends on slope angle at pattern edge, thickness and optical property of film and also substrate, there exists a large difference in size (0.3 ÎŒm) between the defined edge and the true edge in case of photoresist linewidth measurements. Especially, the optical methods have severe problems to measure bottom of pattern edge and are unsuitable to measure pattern linewidth in VLSI\u27s manufacturing. The secondary electron signal obtained by electron beam irradiation can be used to measure pattern linewidth with high accuracy. In order to avoid radiation damage and contamination during in-process measurement, low primary electron energy (1 keV) and low dosage of primary electrons (1X1020electrons/cm2) are used. As secondary electron signal includes much random noise, signal averaging and smoothing methods for random noise reduction are utilized. The automatic detection of bottom edge from secondary electron profile is achieved by detecting the increasing point of line profile which corresponds to the cross point of the average line and the slope line. The linewidths obtained by this method agree with the linewidths calculated from the pattern pitch of cross section image obtained by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) within the error of 0.04ÎŒm

Analysis of Technical Efficiency of Small-Scale Rice Farmers in Indonesia

In this study, we analyzed the performance of small-scale rice farmers who used hand tractors in Jember Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected from 144 small-scale rice farmers in six districts through the use of a questionnaire in September 2015. The Data Envelopment AnalysisSlack-Based Model (DEA-SBM) was used to calculate the technical efficiency of small-scale rice farmers based on seven inputs and one output by determining Overall Technical Efficiency (OTE), Pure Technical Efficiency (PTE), and Scale Efficiency (SE). The results showed that out of 144 small-scale rice farmers, only nine farmers and 14 farmers were evaluated as strongly efficient and weakly efficient, respectively, while the rest were categorized as inefficient. The average values for OTE, PTE, and SE were 0.41, 0.63, and 0.61, respectively. The observed inefficiency was because of both poor input utilization (managerial inefficiency) and failure to operate at an optimal scale (scale inefficiency). Such analysis of technical efficiency can encourage small-scale rice farmers to enhance their performance and profitability

Strichartz estimates for the water-wave problem with surface tension

    Get PDF
Strichartz-type estimates for one-dimensional surface water-waves under surface tension are studied, based on the formulation of the problem as a nonlinear dispersive equation. We establish a family of dispersion estimates on time scales depending on the size of the frequencies. We infer that a solution uu of the dispersive equation we introduce satisfies local-in-time Strichartz estimates with loss in derivative: ∄u∄Lp([0,T])Ws−1/p,q(R)≀C,2p+1q=1/2, \| u \|_{L^p([0,T]) W^{s-1/p,q}(\mathbb{R})} \leq C, \qquad \frac{2}{p} + \frac{1}{q} = {1/2}, where CC depends on TT and on the norms of the initial data in Hs×Hs−3/2H^s \times H^{s-3/2}. The proof uses the frequency analysis and semiclassical Strichartz estimates for the linealized water-wave operator.Comment: Fixed typos and mistakes. Merged with arXiv:0809.451

Citation: Wakizaka, M., Eshima, H., Tanaka, Y., Shirakawa, H., Poole, D. C., & Kano, Y. (2017). In vivo Ca2+ dynamics induced by Ca2+ injection in individual rat skeletal muscle fibers. Physiological Reports, 5(5), 10. doi:10.14814/phy2.13180In contrast to cardiomyocytes, store overload-induced calcium ion (Ca2+) release (SOICR) is not considered to constitute a primary Ca2+ releasing system from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in skeletal muscle myocytes. In the latter, voltage-induced Ca2+ release (VICR) is regarded as the dominant mechanism facilitating contractions. Any role of the SOICR in the regulation of cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+](i)) and its dynamics in skeletal muscle in vivo remains poorly understood. By means of in vivo single fiber Ca2+ microinjections combined with bioimaging techniques, we tested the hypothesis that the [Ca2+](i) dynamics following Ca2+ injection would be amplified and fiber contraction facilitated by SOICR. The circulation-intact spinotrapezius muscle of adult male Wistar rats (n = 34) was exteriorized and loaded with Fura-2 AM to monitor [Ca2+](i) dynamics. Groups of rats underwent the following treatments: (1) 0.02, 0.2, and 2.0 mmol/L Ca2+ injections, (2) 2.0 mmol/L Ca2+ with inhibition of ryanodine receptors (RyR) by dantrolene sodium (DAN), and (3) 2.0 mmol/L Ca2+ with inhibition of SR Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA) by cyclopiazonic acid (CPA). A quantity of 0.02 mmol/L Ca2+ injection yielded no detectable response, whereas peak evoked [Ca2+](i) increased 9.9 +/- 1.8% above baseline for 0.2 mmol/L and 23.8 c 4.3% (P < 0.05) for 2.0 mmol/L Ca2+ injections. The peak [Ca2+](i) in response to 2.0 mmol/L Ca2+ injection was largely abolished by DAN and CPA (-85.8%, -71.0%, respectively, both P < 0.05 vs. unblocked) supporting dependence of the [Ca2+](i) dynamics on Ca2+ released by SOICR rather than injected Ca2+ itself. Thus, this investigation demonstrates the presence of a robust SR-evoked SOICR operant in skeletal muscle in vivo

Damage spreading in two dimensional geometrically frustrated lattices: the triangular and kagome anistropic Heisenberg model

The technique of damage spreading is used to study the phase diagram of the easy axis anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on two geometrically frustrated lattices. The triangular and kagome systems are built up from triangular units that either share edges or corners respectively. The triangular lattice undergoes two sequential Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions while the kagome lattice undergoes a glassy transition. In both cases, the phase boundaries obtained using damage spreading are in good agreement with those obtained from equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Temperature and Emission-Measure Profiles Along Long-Lived Solar Coronal Loops Observed with TRACE

    Get PDF
We report an initial study of temperature and emission measure distributions along four steady loops observed with the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) at the limb of the Sun. The temperature diagnostic is the filter ratio of the extreme-ultraviolet 171-angstrom and 195-angstrom passbands. The emission measure diagnostic is the count rate in the 171-angstrom passband. We find essentially no temperature variation along the loops. We compare the observed loop structure with theoretical isothermal and nonisothermal static loop structure.Comment: 10 pages, 3 postscript figures (LaTeX, uses aaspp4.sty). Accepted by ApJ Letter
