    The Structure of Information Networks

    We develop a model of information acquisition in a network where agents pay for all the information they acquire including those through indirect links. The cost of information depends on the value of information itself and the distance it traverses in the network. We find that when the costs of information increase with distance, the complete network is the only Nash network. When costs of information decrease with distance capturing delay, all equilibrium information networks are minimally connected, though not all trees are Nash. We analyze the popular star and chain networks and identify strict Nash networks. We show that there is almost no divergence between efficient and equilibrium information networks. We explore the implications of a spatial model and information decay and discuss the relationship with experimental evidence.Nash networks, information networks, efficient networks

    Multiplicative Depth Independent & Efficient MPC in the Presence of Mixed Adversary

    An extensive research of MPC protocols in different adversarial settings over the past few years has led to various improvements. Goyal et al.\cite{goyal2019communication} in their paper addressed the issue of an efficient MPC protocol in active adversarial setting by removing the dependency on multiplication depth DmD_m in the arithmetic circuit. This development was followed by Hirt et al. in ITC 2020, which proposed an efficient MPC protocol tolerating mixed adversary with communication complexity of O((ci+cm+co)nκ+ciBA(κ)+Dm(n3κ+nBA(κ)))O((c_i + c_m + c_o)n\kappa + c_iBA(\kappa) + D_m(n^3\kappa + nBA(\kappa))) bits, where DmD_m is the multiplicative depth of the circuit and κ\kappa is the size of an element in the field. Additionally, Hirt et al.\cite{hirt2020efficient}, proposed an open problem to construct a protocol for the mixed adversarial setting, independent of the multiplicative depth DmD_m, with linear communication complexity. In this paper, we resolve this problem in the affirmative by providing an efficient MPC protocol in the mixed adversarial setting independent of the multiplicative depth of the circuit

    Analysis of Barthel index and care giver strain index in stroke patients in tertiary care hospital in South India

    Background: Stroke patients have high rate of mortality and morbidity and survivors suffer from physical, cognitive and emotional issues. Quality of life of stroke survivors depends on severity of disability. These disability or morbidities not only affect stroke survivors but also has impact on physical and psychological wellbeing of caregivers providing support for daily routine. Aim of this study is to analyse the dependency using Barthel Index in stroke patients and care giver strain (CSI) among caregivers. Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study in a tertiary care hospital in South India. Study duration of 5 months. 150 Patients admitted for stroke meeting the inclusion criteria were included for the study. Caregiver was interviewed after Informed consent and briefing of purpose of study. Berthel index and modified care giver strain index questionnaire was filled by interviewer with caregiver. Findings were described in simple descriptive manner. Statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 24 was used for statistical analysis. Results: Of 150 patients male 64% female 36%. Care giver strain score of <7 (40%), 8-14 (42%), >14 (18%). Sleep deprivation 68%, physical strain 85%, family adjustment problems 32%, work adjustment problems 67%, financial strain 76%, emotional adjustment problems 33%, personal plans problems 44%, upsetting behavior problems 44%. Only 17% termed it as inconvenient, 24% completely overwhelmed, 29% confining. Barthel index of >80 able to live independently (13%), 61-80 minimally dependent (32%), 41-60 partially dependent (26%), 21-40 very dependent (13%), <20 total dependency (16%). Conclusions: In stroke care caregiver strain is high when patient is dependent for routine activities. This includes physical as well as psychological strain. There is need to develop strategic home based or community based programs to reduce caregiver stress and improve their quality of life

    LDL levels and ejection fraction in ischemic stroke patients: a hospital based cross-sectional study

    Background: Ischemic stroke is a top contributor to mortality amongst non-infectious diseases. Atherosclerosis is a major risk factor. This study aims to assess LDL levels and ejection fraction in ischemic stroke patients. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Government Thoothukudi Medical College from November, 2022 to April, 2023. 35 patients admitted in the neuromedicine ward and diagnosed as acute ischemic stroke were included in the study after informed consent and ethical clearance. Patients with acute neurological deficit and evidence of infarct on diffusion-weighted MRI were included. Patients with no evidence of infarct on DWI, those already on lipid lowering therapy, patients with a history of cerebrovascular disease or transient ischemic attacks were excluded. Blood for lipid profile taken after 8 hours of overnight fasting. Echocardiography done for all patients. Results: Of the 35 patients, 26 (74.28%) were men, mean age was 62.4. 57.14%  ischemic stroke patients had their LDL levels elevated, 28.57% had decreased HDL, 28.57% had total cholesterol levels elevated, and in 14.28% triglycerides was elevated. This study also observed the cardiac status of the patients which showed 29% patients had decreased ejection fraction. Conclusions: This study concluded that most patients had elevated LDL levels which is an independent risk factor of ischemic cerebrovascular disease. LDL levels were also associated with decreased ejection fraction in a significant number of patients. Thereby it can be concluded that elevated LDL cholesterol levels can add to the cardiac risk, potentially contributing to stroke morbidity and mortality

    Determination of small-field output factors for beam-matched linear accelerators using various detectors and comparison of detector-specific output correction factors using IAEA Technical Report Series 483 protocol

    Background: Beam matching is widely used to ensure that linear accelerators used in radiotherapy have equal dosimetry characteristics. Small-field output factors (OF) were measured using different detectors infour beam-matched linear accelerators and the measured OFs were compared with existing treatment planning system (TPS) Monte Carlo algorithm calculated OFs. Materials and methods: Three Elekta Versa HDTM and one Elekta InfinityTMlinear accelerators with photon energies of 6 MV Flattening Filter (FF), 10 MVFF, 6 MV Flattening Filter Free (FFF) and 10 MVFFF were used in this study. All the Linac’swere beam-matched, Dosimetry beam data were ±1% compare with Reference Linac. Ten different type of detectors (four ionization chambers and six diode detectors) were used for small-field OF measurements.The OFs were measured for field sizes of 1 × 1 to 10 × 10 cm2, and normalized to 10 × 10 cm2 field size. The uncorrected and corrected OFs were calculated from these measurements. The corrected OF was compare with existing treatment planning system (TPS) Monte Carlo algorithm calculated OFs. Results: The small-field corrected and Uncorrected OF variations among the linear accelerators was within 1% for all energies and detectors. An increase in field size led to a reduction in the difference between OFs among the detectors, which was the case for all energies. The RSD values decreased with increasing field size. The TRS 483 provided Detector-specificoutputcorrection factor (OCF) reduced uncertainty in small-field measurements. Conclusion: It is necessary to implement the OF-correction of small fields in a TPS. Special care must be taken to incorporate the corrected small-field OF in a TPS.

    Effect of compatibilizer and nanosilica on the mechanical, thermal, and degradation kinetic properties of polypropylene/polylactic acid blends

    In this study, polypropylene (PP) was blended with polylactic acid (PLA) to enhance PP's mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and modulus, and to encourage the adoption of eco-friendly, renewable resource based material in polymer production. Even though PLA's biodegradability cannot be fully utilized in PP/PLA blends, but PLA can still improve PP's mechanical properties and provide an alternative resource for biobased raw materials. To meet the requirement, PP and PLA were blended in a 70:30 ratios with a compatibilizer and nanosilica at different loading levels by melt-blending. Blends of PP and PLA materials were processed without any problems, since both materials have melting points in the range of 170°C. Despite this, the properties of polymer blends are limited by the immiscibility between these neat polymers. To solve this problem, compatibilizers like polypropylene-grafted-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) were added to blends to improve their compatibility. Nanosilica was also added to this compatibilizer to study the system's compatibility and modify the hydrophobicity of PLA. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), tensile strength, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to analyze the polymer blend. Results indicate that compatibilizers play a significant role in improving tensile properties, thermal stability, and blend dispersion in the system, mainly in 5 parts compatibilizer-based systems. Composition with 5 parts compatibilizer increases tensile strength of 70/30 blend from 19.7 to 27 MPa, while elongation increases from 2.2 to 3.6 %. Additionally, a composition with 0.7 parts of nanosilica increases the modulus from 1488 to 1732 MPa when compared to the 70/30 blend

    In the title complex, [Co(CO3)(C12H12N2)2]Br·3H2O, the CoIII cation has a distorted octa­hedral coordination environment. It is chelated by four N atoms of two different 5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridyl (dmbpy) ligands in axial and equatorial positions, and by two O atoms of a carbonate anion completing the equatorial positions. Although the water mol­ecules are disordered and their H atoms were not located, there are typical O⋯O distances between 2.8 and 3.0 Å, indicating O—H⋯O hydrogen bonding. The crystal packing is consolidated by C—H⋯O and C—H⋯Br hydrogen bonds, as well as π–π stacking inter­actions between adjacent pyridine rings of the dmbpy ligands, with centroid–centroid distances of 3.694 (3) and 3.7053 (3) Å
