Convergence estimates for multigrid algorithms
AbstractTo estimate convergence of the multigrid algorithms, we need some assumptions on smoothers. The assumptions for typical smoothers are well analyzed in the multigrid literature [1,2]. However, numerical evidence shows that Kaczmarz smoother does not satisfy above assumptions. Thus, we introduce a weaker condition which is satisfied by Kaczmarz smoother as well as Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel smoother. Under these weaker assumptions, we show that the convergence factor of V-cycle multigrid algorithm is δ = 1 − 1(C(j − 1)). assumptions for Kaczmarz smoother are verified by numerical experiment
Single-filament Composite MgB2/SUS Ribbons by Powder-In-Tube Process
We report the successful fabrication of single-filament composite MgB2/SUS
ribbons, as an ultra-robust conductor type, employing the powder-in-tube (PIT)
process, by swaging and cold rolling only. The remarkable transport critical
current (Ic) of the non-sintered MgB2/SUS ribbon has observed, as an unexpected
result. Transport critical currents Ic ~ 316 A at T = 4.2 K and Ic ~ 82 A at T
= 20 K were observed at self-field, for the non-sintered composite MgB2/SUS
ribbon. In addition, the persistent current density Jp values, that were
estimated by Bean formula, were more than ~ 7  105 A/cm2 at T = 5 K,
and ~ 1.2  105 A/cm2 at T = 30 K, for the sintered composite MgB2/SUS
ribbon, at H = 0 G.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Higgs Boson Bounds in Three and Four Generation Scenarios
In light of recent experimental results, we present updated bounds on the
lightest Higgs boson mass in the Standard Model (SM) and in the Minimal
Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). The vacuum stability
lower bound on the pure SM Higgs boson mass when the SM is taken to be valid up
to the Planck scale lies above the MSSM lightest Higgs boson mass upper bound
for a large amount of SUSY parameter space. If the lightest Higgs boson is
detected with a mass M_{H} < 134 GeV (150 GeV) for a top quark mass M_{top} =
172 GeV (179 GeV), it may indicate the existence of a fourth generation of
fermions. The region of inconsistency is removed and the MSSM is salvagable for
such values of M_{H} if one postulates the existence of a fourth generation of
leptons and quarks with isodoublet degenerate masses M_{L} and M_{Q} such that

Beyond the random phase approximation in the Singwi-Sj\"olander theory of the half-filled Landau level
We study the Chern-Simons system and consider a self-consistent
field theory of the Singwi-Sj\"olander type which goes beyond the random phase
approximation (RPA). By considering the Heisenberg equation of motion for the
longitudinal momentum operator, we are able to show that the zero-frequency
density-density response function vanishes linearly in long wavelength limit
independent of any approximation. From this analysis, we derive a consistency
condition for a decoupling of the equal time density-density and
density-momentum correlation functions. By using the Heisenberg equation of
motion of the Wigner distribution function with a decoupling of the correlation
functions which respects this consistency condition, we calculate the response
functions of the system. In our scheme, we get a density-density
response function which vanishes linearly in the Coulomb case for
zero-frequency in the long wavelength limit. Furthermore, we derive the
compressibility, and the Landau energy as well as the Coulomb energy. These
energies are in better agreement to numerical and exact results, respectively,
than the energies calculated in the RPA.Comment: 9 Revtex pages, 4 eps figures, typos correcte
The genetic basis of host preference and resting behavior in the major African malaria vector, Anopheles arabiensis
Malaria transmission is dependent on the propensity of Anopheles mosquitoes to bite
humans (anthropophily) instead of other dead end hosts. Recent increases in the usage of
Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) in Africa have been associated with reductions in highly anthropophilic and endophilic vectors such as Anopheles gambiae s.s., leaving species with a broader host range, such as Anopheles arabiensis, as the most
prominent remaining source of transmission in many settings. An. arabiensis appears to be
more of a generalist in terms of its host choice and resting behavior, which may be due to
phenotypic plasticity and/or segregating allelic variation. To investigate the genetic basis of host choice and resting behavior in An. arabiensis we sequenced the genomes of 23
human-fed and 25 cattle-fed mosquitoes collected both in-doors and out-doors in the Kilombero Valley, Tanzania. We identified a total of 4,820,851 SNPs, which were used to conduct the first genome-wide estimates of “SNP heritability”for host choice and resting
behavior in this species. A genetic component was detected for host choice (human vs cow
fed; permuted P = 0.002), but there was no evidence of a genetic component for resting
behavior (indoors versus outside; permuted P = 0.465). A principal component analysis
(PCA) segregated individuals based on genomic variation into three groups which were
characterized by differences at the 2Rb and/or 3Ra paracentromeric chromosome inversions. There was a non-random distribution of cattle-fed mosquitoes between the PCA clusters, suggesting that alleles linked to the 2Rb and/or 3Ra inversions may influence host
choice. Using a novel inversion genotyping assay, we detected a significant enrichment of
the standard arrangement (non-inverted) of 3Ra among cattle-fed mosquitoes (N = 129)
versus all non-cattle-fed individuals. Thus, tracking the frequency of the 3Ra in An. arabiensis populations may be of use to infer selection on host choice behavior within these vector populations; possibly in response to vector control. Controlled
host-choice assays are needed to discern whether the observed genetic component has a
direct relationship with innate host preference. A better understanding of the genetic basis
for host feeding behavior in An. arabiensis may also open avenues for novel vector control
strategies based on driving genes for zoophily into wild mosquito populations
Macroscopic Strings and "Quirks" at Colliders
We consider extensions of the standard model containing additional heavy
particles ("quirks") charged under a new unbroken non-abelian gauge group as
well as the standard model. We assume that the quirk mass m is in the
phenomenologically interesting range 100 GeV--TeV, and that the new gauge group
gets strong at a scale Lambda < m. In this case breaking of strings is
exponentially suppressed, and quirk production results in strings that are long
compared to 1/Lambda. The existence of these long stable strings leads to
highly exotic events at colliders. For 100 eV < Lambda < keV the strings are
macroscopic, giving rise to events with two separated quirk tracks with
measurable curvature toward each other due to the string interaction. For keV <
Lambda < MeV the typical strings are mesoscopic: too small to resolve in the
detector, but large compared to atomic scales. In this case, the bound state
appears as a single particle, but its mass is the invariant mass of a quirk
pair, which has an event-by-event distribution. For MeV < Lambda < m the
strings are microscopic, and the quirks annihilate promptly within the
detector. For colored quirks, this can lead to hadronic fireball events with
10^3 hadrons with energy of order GeV emitted in conjunction with hard decay
products from the final annihilation.Comment: Added discussion of photon-jet decay, fixed minor typo
Tunneling conductance in strained graphene-based superconductor: Effect of asymmetric Weyl-Dirac fermions
Based on the BTK theory, we investigate the tunneling conductance in a
uniaxially strained graphene-based normal metal (NG)/ barrier
(I)/superconductor (SG) junctions. In the present model, we assume that
depositing the conventional superconductor on the top of the uniaxially
strained graphene, normal graphene may turn to superconducting graphene with
the Cooper pairs formed by the asymmetric Weyl-Dirac electrons, the massless
fermions with direction-dependent velocity. The highly asymmetrical velocity,
vy/vx>>1, may be created by strain in the zigzag direction near the transition
point between gapless and gapped graphene. In the case of the highly
asymmetrical velocity, we find that the Andreev reflection strongly depends on
the direction and the current perpendicular to the direction of strain can flow
in the junction as if there was no barrier. Also, the current parallel to the
direction of strain anomalously oscillates as a function of the gate voltage
with very high frequency. Our predicted result is found as quite different from
the feature of the quasiparticle tunneling in the unstrained graphene-based
NG/I/SG conventional junction. This is because of the presence of the
direction-dependent-velocity quasiparticles in the highly strained graphene
system.Comment: 18 pages, 7 Figures; Eq.13 and 14 are correcte
Geodesic motions in extraordinary string geometry
The geodesic properties of the extraordinary vacuum string solution in (4+1)
dimensions are analyzed by using Hamilton-Jacobi method. The geodesic motions
show distinct properties from those of the static one. Especially, any freely
falling particle can not arrive at the horizon or singularity. There exist
stable null circular orbits and bouncing timelike and null geodesics. To get
into the horizon {or singularity}, a particle need to follow a non-geodesic
trajectory. We also analyze the orbit precession to show that the precession
angle has distinct features for each geometry such as naked singularity, black
string, and wormhole.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure
String compactification, QCD axion and axion-photon-photon coupling
It is pointed out that there exist a few problems to be overcome toward an
observable sub-eV QCD axion in superstring compactification. We give a general
expression for the axion decay constant. For a large domain wall number
, the axion decay constant can be substantially lowered from a generic
value of a scalar singlet VEV. The Yukawa coupling structure in the recent
model is studied completely, including the needed nonrenormalizable
terms toward realistic quark and lepton masses. In this model we find an
approximate global symmetry and vacuum so that a QCD axion results but its
decay constant is at the GUT scale. The axion-photon-photon coupling is
calculated for a realistic vacuum satisfying the quark and lepton mass matrix
conditions. It is the first time calculation of in
realistic string compactifications: .Comment: 33 pages, 2 figures, JHEP format, some errors in the superpotential
