    Cholesterol granuloma is an inflammatory reaction to cholesterol crystals deposition. It may develop in a variety of sites including the middle ear, mastoid process or even paranasal sinuses. Very few cases of cholesterol granuloma occurring in the jaws were reported. This report presents a rare case of cholesterol granuloma that developed in the wall of a large mandibular dentigerous cyst. The condition was treated with hemimandibulectomy followed by reconstruction with a free fibular flap

    Singapore's health-care system:key features, challenges, and shifts

    Since Singapore became an independent nation in 1965, the development of its health-care system has been underpinned by an emphasis on personal responsibility for health, and active government intervention to ensure access and affordability through targeted subsidies and to reduce unnecessary costs. Singapore is achieving good health outcomes, with a total health expenditure of 4·47% of gross domestic product in 2016. However, the health-care system is contending with increased stress, as reflected in so-called pain points that have led to public concern, including shortages in acute hospital beds and intermediate and long-term care (ILTC) services, and high out-of-pocket payments. The main drivers of these challenges are the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases and rapid population ageing, limitations in the delivery and organisation of primary care and ILTC, and financial incentives that might inadvertently impede care integration. To address these challenges, Singapore's Ministry of Health implemented a comprehensive set of reforms in 2012 under its Healthcare 2020 Masterplan. These reforms substantially increased the capacity of public hospital beds and ILTC services in the community, expanded subsidies for primary care and long-term care, and introduced a series of financing health-care reforms to strengthen financial protection and coverage. However, it became clear that these measures alone would not address the underlying drivers of system stress in the long term. Instead, the system requires, and is making, much more fundamental changes to its approach.     It is shown that the large angle MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem with a bi-maximal neutrino mixing matrix implies an energy-independent suppression of the solar nu_e flux.     LHC Signature of Mirage Mediation

    We study LHC phenomenology of mirage mediation scenario in which anomaly and modulus contributions to soft SUSY breaking terms are comparable to each other. A Monte Carlo study of mirage mediation, with model parameters α=1\alpha=1,M0=500 M_0=500 GeV, nM=1/2n_M=1/2, nH=1n_H=1 and tanβ=10\rm{tan}\beta=10, is presented. It is shown that masses of supersymmetric particles can be measured in a model independent way, providing information on SUSY breaking sector. In particular, the mass ratio of gluino to the lightest neutralino for the benchmark scenario is determined to be 1.9 \lesssim m_{\tildeg}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \lesssim 3.1, well reproducing theoretical input value of mg~/mχ~102.5m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \simeq 2.5 which is quite distinctive from the predictions mg~/mχ~106m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \gtrsim 6 of other SUSY scenarios in which gaugino masses are unified at the GUT scale.     Multiscale modeling and simulation of nanotube-based torsional oscillators

    In this paper, we propose the first numerical study of nanotube-based torsional oscillators via developing a new multiscale model. The edge-to-edge technique was employed in this multiscale method to couple the molecular model, i.e., nanotubes, and the continuum model, i.e., the metal paddle. Without losing accuracy, the metal paddle was treated as the rigid body in the continuum model. Torsional oscillators containing (10,0) nanotubes were mainly studied. We considered various initial angles of twist to depict linear/nonlinear characteristics of torsional oscillators. Furthermore, effects of vacancy defects and temperature on mechanisms of nanotube-based torsional oscillators were discussed

    Possible Flavor Mixing Structures of Lepton Mass Matrices

    To search for possible textures of lepton mass matrices, we systematically examine flavor mixing structures which can lead to large lepton mixing angles. We find out 37 mixing patterns are consistent with experimental data, taking into account phase factors in the mixing matrices. Only six of the patterns can explain the observed data without any tuning of parameters, while the others need particular choices for the phase values. It is found that these six mixing patterns are those predicted by the models which have been proposed to account for fermion mass hierarchies. On the other hand, the others may give new flavor mixing structures of lepton mass matrices and therefore new possibilities of model construction.Comment: 21 page

    Reaction Diffusion Models in One Dimension with Disorder

    We study a large class of 1D reaction diffusion models with quenched disorder using a real space renormalization group method (RSRG) which yields exact results at large time. Particles (e.g. of several species) undergo diffusion with random local bias (Sinai model) and react upon meeting. We obtain the large time decay of the density of each specie, their associated universal amplitudes, and the spatial distribution of particles. We also derive the spectrum of exponents which characterize the convergence towards the asymptotic states. For reactions with several asymptotic states, we analyze the dynamical phase diagram and obtain the critical exponents at the transitions. We also study persistence properties for single particles and for patterns. We compute the decay exponents for the probability of no crossing of a given point by, respectively, the single particle trajectories (θ\theta) or the thermally averaged packets (θˉ\bar{\theta}). The generalized persistence exponents associated to n crossings are also obtained. Specifying to the process A+AA+A \to \emptyset or A with probabilities (r,1r)(r,1-r), we compute exactly the exponents δ(r)\delta(r) and ψ(r)\psi(r) characterizing the survival up to time t of a domain without any merging or with mergings respectively, and δA(r)\delta_A(r) and ψA(r)\psi_A(r) characterizing the survival up to time t of a particle A without any coalescence or with coalescences respectively. θˉ,ψ,δ\bar{\theta}, \psi, \delta obey hypergeometric equations and are numerically surprisingly close to pure system exponents (though associated to a completely different diffusion length).     Mapping of periodically poled crystals via spontaneous parametric down-conversion

    A new method for characterization of periodically poled crystals is developed based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The method is demonstrated on crystals of Y:LiNbO3, Mg:Y:LiNbO3 with non-uniform periodically poled structures, obtained directly under Czochralski growth procedure and designed for application of OPO in the mid infrared range. Infrared dispersion of refractive index, effective working periods and wavelengths of OPO were determined by special treatment of frequency-angular spectra of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the visible range. Two-dimensional mapping via spontaneous parametric down-conversion is proposed for characterizing spatial distribution of bulk quasi-phase matching efficiency across the input window of a periodically poled sample.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure

    Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell state in quasi-one-dimensional superconductors

    The properties of a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) superconductor with {\it an open Fermi surface} are expected to be unusual in a magnetic field. On the one hand, the quasi-1D structure of the Fermi surface strongly favors the formation of a non-uniform state (Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) state) in the presence of a magnetic field acting on the electron spins. On the other hand, a magnetic field acting on an open Fermi surface induces a dimensional crossover by confining the electronic wave-functions wave-functions along the chains of highest conductivity, which results in a divergence of the orbital critical field and in a stabilization at low temperature of a cascade of superconducting phases separated by first order transistions. In this paper, we study the phase diagram as a function of the anisotropy. We discuss in details the experimental situation in the quasi-1D organic conductors of the Bechgaard salts family and argue that they appear as good candidates for the observation of the LOFF state, provided that their anisotropy is large enough. Recent experiments on the organic quasi-1D superconductor (TMTSF)2_2ClO4_4 are in agreement with the results obtained in this paper and could be interpreted as a signature of a high-field superconducting phase.     Electric charge quantization and the muon anomalous magnetic moment

    We investigate some proposals to solve the electric charge quantization puzzle, which simultaneously explain the recent measured deviation on the muon anomalous magnetic moment. For this we assess extensions of the Electro-Weak Standard Model spanning modifications on the scalar sector only.
