    Creep-fatigue crack growth testing and analysis of pre-strained 316H stainless steel

    Material pre-straining is known to have significant effects of the mechanical response and crack growth behaviour of steels. In this paper, the influence of material pre-straining on the subsequent creep-fatigue crack growth behaviour of Type 316H stainless steel at 550 °C has been examined by performing tests on compact tension specimens that were extracted from blocks uniformly pre-compressed at room temperature. Creep-fatigue crack growth tests on pre-compressed material were performed at the frequency of 0.01 Hz and R-ratio of 0.1. The crack growth data obtained from these experiments have been correlated with the C* and K fracture mechanics parameters and the results are compared with the existing creep crack growth data on the pre-compressed and as-received material at 550 °C. The results obtained have also been compared with the creep-fatigue data from experiments on weldments where the crack tip was located in the heat affected zone (HAZ). The crack growth behaviour in creep-fatigue tests on pre-compressed material has been found similar to that of HAZ material and are higher than that of the as-received material. Moreover, depending on the loading condition and frequency the crack growth data obtained from creep-fatigue tests on pre-compressed material may be characterized using C* or ΔK fracture mechanics parameters

    Ecstasy is one of the most popular amusing drugs among young people. Documents indicate some effects of Ecstasy on hippocampus and close relations between dopaminergic functions with reward learning. Therefore, the aim of this study was evaluation of the chronic effects of Ecstasy on memory in male Wistar rats and determination of dopamine receptors' gene expression in hippocampus. Forty adult male Wistar rats randomly distributed in five groups: Control, sham (received 1 ml/kg 0.9 saline) and three experimental groups were: Exp. 1 (2.5 mg/kg), Exp. 2 (5 mg/kg), and Exp. 3 (10 mg/kg) received MDMA intraperitoneally once every 7 days (3 times a day, 3 hours apart) for 4 weeks. Before the first injection animals trained in Shuttle Box memory and tested after the last injection. 24 hours after the final testing, brains of rats were dissected and hippocampus was removed and homogenized. After total RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis, expression of dopamine receptor genes in the hippocampus determined with Real-Time PCR. Our results showed that 2.5 and 5 mg/kg MDMA-treated groups had memory impairment. Also we found that MDMA increased the mRNA expression of dopamine receptors in hippocampus and the highest increase found in dopamine D1 receptors in the 5 mg/kg experimental group. We concluded that low doses of Ecstasy could increase Dopamine takers gene expression in hippocampus and disorder avoidance memory. But in high doses the increase in Dopamine takers gene expression was not as much as that in low doses and avoidance memory disorder was not observed. © 2015, Universidad de la Frontera.     An investigation of irregular crack path effects on fracture mechanics parameters using a grain microstructure meshing technique

The results can be used when modelling intergranular and transgranular crack growth where creep and fatigue are the dominant failure mechanisms and their crack paths are irregular. A novel method for sub-grain scale finite element mesh consisting of multiple elements encased in ~50–150 μm-sized grains has been developed and implemented in a compact tension, C(T), mesh structure. The replicated shapes and dimensions were derived from an isotropic metallic grain structure using representative random sized grain shapes repeated in sequence ahead of the crack tip. In this way the effects of crack tip angle ahead of the main crack path can be considered in a more realistic manner. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis has been performed for elastic and elastic-plastic materials using ABAQUS and the stress distributions, the stress intensity factor and the J-integral have been evaluated for irregular crack paths and compared to those of obtained from analytical solutions. To examine the local and macroscopic graph path effects on fracture mechanics parameters, a few extreme cases with various crack-tip angles have been modelled by keeping the macroscopic crack path parallel to the axis of symmetry. The numerical solutions from these granular mesh structures have been found in relatively good agreement with analytical solutions

    Plastic pre-compression and creep damage effects on the fracture toughness behaviour of Type 316H stainless steel

    The influence of inelastic damage in the form of plastic pre-strain and creep damage, on fracture toughness of Type 316H stainless steel has been examined. Creep damage has been introduced into the 8% pre-compressed material by interrupting creep crack growth tests. Comparisons have been made between the fracture toughness test results from the as-received, pre-compressed and creep damaged materials. Furthermore, the effects of creep crack discontinuities on the crack tip strain fields have been examined by digital image correlation measurements. Inelastic damage was found to reduce the fracture toughness of the material, with creep damage having more severe effects than pre-strain

    Improving Recurrent Software Development: A Contextualist Inquiry Into Release Cycle Management

    Software development is increasingly conducted in a recurrent fashion, where the same product or service is continuously being developed for the marketplace. Still, we lack detailed studies about this particular context of software development. Against this backdrop, this dissertation presents an action research study into Software Inc., a large multi-national software provider. The research addressed the challenges the company faced in managing releases and organizing software process improvement (SPI) to help recurrently develop and deliver a specific product, Secure-on-Request, to its customers and the wider marketplace. The initial problem situation was characterized by recent acquisition of additional software, complexity of service delivery, new engineering and product management teams, and low software development process maturity. Asking how release management can be organized and improved in the context of recurrent development of software, we draw on Pettigrew’s contextualist inquiry to focus on the ongoing interaction between the contents, context and process to organize and improve release cycle practices and outcomes. As a result, the dissertation offers two contributions. Practically, it contributes to the resolution of the problem situation at Software Inc. Theoretically, it introduces a new software engineering discipline, release cycle management (RCM), focused on recurrent delivery of software, including SPI as an integral part, and grounded in the specific experiences at Software Inc
