Trajectories of depressive symptoms after a major cardiac event

Depression is a common comorbidity in cardiac patients. This study sought to document fluctuations of depressive symptoms in the 12 months after a first major cardiac event. In all, 310 patients completed a battery of psychosocial measures including the depression subscale of the Symptom Check List-90-Revised. A total of 252 of them also completed follow-up measures at 3 and 12 months. Trajectories of depressive symptoms were classified as none, worsening symptoms, sustained remission, and persistent symptoms. Although the prevalence of depressive symptoms was consistent at each assessment, there was considerable fluctuation between symptom classes. Collaborative care for the treatment of comorbid depression and coronary heart disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol

BACKGROUND: Depression and coronary heart disease (CHD) are frequently comorbid and portend higher morbidity, mortality and poorer quality of life. Prior systematic reviews of depression treatment randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the population with CHD have not assessed the efficacy of collaborative care. This systematic review aims to bring together the contemporary research on the effectiveness of collaborative care interventions for depression in comorbid CHD populations. METHODS/DESIGN: Electronic databases (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO and CINAHL) will be searched using a sensitive search strategy exploding the topics CHD, depression and RCT. Full text inspection and bibliography searching will be conducted, and authors of included studies will be contacted to identify unpublished studies. Eligibility criteria are: population, depression comorbid with CHD; intervention, RCT of collaborative care defined as a coordinated model of care involving multidisciplinary health care providers, including: (a) primary physician and at least one other health professional (e.g. nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist), (b) a structured patient management plan that delivers either pharmacological or non-pharmacological intervention, (c) scheduled patient follow-up and (d) enhanced inter-professional communication between the multiprofessional team; comparison, either usual care, enhanced usual care, wait-list control group or no further treatment; and outcome, major adverse cardiac events (MACE), standardized measure of depression, anxiety, quality of life, cost-effectiveness. Screening, data extraction and risk of bias assessment will be undertaken by two reviewers with disagreements resolved through discussion. Meta-analytic methods will be used to synthesize the data collected relating to the outcomes. DISCUSSION: This review will evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of collaborative care for depression in populations primarily with CHD. Does loneliness lie within? Personality functioning shapes loneliness and mental distress in a representative population sample

Background: Loneliness is a major public health issue and the identification of risk factors is crucial for prevention and intervention. While previous research has often investigated sociodemographic and external factors (e.g., living situation), personality variables received less attention. This study aimed to harness recent advances in the dimensional assessment of personality pathology to expand knowledge about psychological determinants of loneliness in the population. Methods: We surveyed a sample representative of the German population concerning age, gender, and level of education (N = 2412) using measures of loneliness (UCLA 3-item loneliness scale), personality functioning (12-item version of the OPD-Structure Questionnaire OPD-SQS), and mental distress (PHQ-4). We explored the relevance of personality functioning for loneliness in a multivariate linear regression analysis and in a theoretically-based path model in which we tested loneliness as the mediator between personality functioning and mental distress. Results: In the regression analysis, personality functioning showed strong associations with loneliness (β = 0.48, p < .001) (within a model that included gender, age, living situation, income, education, and partnership). The mediation model fit the data well and loneliness mediated 39.9% of the total effect of personality functioning on distress. Limitations: The present findings are based on cross-sectional survey data. Conclusions: This study gives insight into previously understudied individual differences shaping feelings of loneliness and mental health outcomes. It suggests that deficits in personality functioning independently aggravate the risk of experiencing loneliness, hence the conception of risk factors for loneliness should be expanded to include personality variables

Epidémiologie et prophylaxie des strongyloses digestives, de la fasciolose, et de la paramphistomose chez les bovins (suivi dans un élevage allaitant en plein air intégral de Haute-Vienne)

Les strongyloses digestives, la fasciolose et la paramphistomose sont des parasitoses importantes en France chez les bovins, par leur fréquence et les pertes économiques qu'elles engendrent. Une première partie bibliographique décrit leur étiologie, leur épidémiologie, leur pathologie et les diverses possibilités de diagnostic et de contrôle. La seconde partie traite de leur épidémiologie et de leur prophylaxie dans un élevage allaitant en plein air intégral de Haute-Vienne. Angular distributions of NO in laser-induced desorption from Pt(111)

The angular distributions of NO photodesorbed from a Pt(111) surface by UV-laser irradiation at 193 nm are investigated as a function of velocity using a quantum state specific detection method, which combines resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) and a two-dimensional-imaging technique. The angular distributions of NO in individual rovibrational states are observed to be strongly peaked in the surface normal direction and are consistently reproduced by gaussian functions in the desorption angle θ. The angular width of these distributions is found to decrease substantially with the velocity of the desorbing molecules. The identical velocity dependence of the angular distributions is observed independent of the rotational quantum states of the photodesorbed NO molecules. This is indicative of a de-coupling of the rotational motion of the molecular axis and the hindered parallel translation of the molecules in the adsorption ground state as well as in the excited states probed by the desorption process. The implications of a simple impulsive model, which relates the amplitude of the frustrated translational motion to the velocity dependence of the observed angular distributions, are discussed
