    A New Method to Reconstruct the Energy and Determine the Composition of Cosmic Rays from the Measurement of Cherenkov Light and Particle Densities in Extended Air Showers

    A Monte-Carlo study is presented using ground based measurements of the electromagnetic part of showers initiated in the atmosphere by high energetic cosmic rays to reconstruct energy and mass of primary particles with energies above 300 TeV.     Coherent and random UHECR Spectroscopy of Lightest Nuclei along CenA: Shadows on GZK Tau Neutrinos spread in a near sky and time

    Earliest 2007 UHECR anisotropy findings and ICRC AUGER updated maps and clustering confirms our understanding of CenA as the main nearby UHECR source. Those events are mostly lightest nuclei, as He. The events are spread by galactic fields. We argue that the main UHECR event bending, along CenA, is spreading vertically (respect to horizontal spiral galactic fields) by random (and a final coherent) Lorentz force. The He-nuclei dominance is also well probed by detailed AUGER composition data. The Lightest nuclei are still compatible with most recent Hires composition results. Such lightest UHECR nuclei are fragile and opaque even to nearest Universe. Offering a very narrow local (ten Mpc) view. This opacity explain the otherwise puzzling Virgo persistent absence. The He photo-disruption in flight should lead to halves energy tail clustering (along the same CenA group), events made by deuterium, He3 and protons (or unstable neutrons). This tail anisotropy should be revaled. The consequent foreseen UHE neutrino by UHECR Lightest nuclei dissociation, at tens-a hundred PeV, may rise soon in AUGER and TA telescopes. Such neutrino signal are quite inclined upward fluorescent Tau air-showers at nearest (2 - 4 km) horizons, at middle-low telescope view zenith angles. Their air-showers will be opening and extending in widest azimuth angle and fastest angular velocity spread. Contrary to far EeV tau expected by popular GZK neutrinos. Even hard to observe these Tau Air-showers at tens and hundred PeVs may soon shine (in a peculiar way) at near telescope views and within a short (years) time, both in AUGER, HEAT and TA sky.Comment: 5 pages, 12 figures, (2 new figures from the original and modified AUGER HEP09 talk presentation

    The interplay between the electromagnetic and the muonic longitudinal profile at production

    The electromagnetic and the muonic longitudinal profile at production enclosure important information about the primary particle and the hadronic interactions that rule the shower development. In fact, these two profiles provide two different insights of the shower: the electromagnetic component gives a measurement of the energy and the strength of the neutral pion channel; while the muonic profile, being intimately related with the charged mesons decays, can be used as a direct probe for the high energy hadronic interactions. In this work we explore the interplay between the electromagnetic and muonic profiles, by analysing their phenomenologic behaviour for different primary masses and energies, zenith angles, and also different high energy hadronic interaction models. We have found that the muonic longitudinal profile at production displays universal features similar to what is known for the electromagnetic one. Moreover, we show that both profiles have new primary mass composition variables which are fairly independent of the high energy hadronic interaction model. Finally we discuss how the information in the electromagnetic and the muonic longitudinal profile can be combined to break the degeneracy between the primary mass composition and the high energy hadronic physics.Comment: 5 pages, to appear in conference proceedings of International Symposium on Very High Energy Cosmic Ray Interactions (ISVHECRI 2012), Berlin, German

    Maintaining physical activity in cardiac rehabilitation

    This chapter describes an intervention that has been used to encourage individuals to remain regularly physically active in exercise-based CR in phases III and IV.The principles of this intervention are also appropriate for allphases of CR.This intervention, called the exercise consultation (EC), is based on the Transtheoretical Model of behaviour change and Relapse Prevention Model (pp.197-205), and uses cognitive and behavioural strategies to increaseand maintain physical activity (Loughlan and Mutrie,1995,1997). The strategies used in this EC include: assessing stage of change, decisional balance, overcoming barriers to activity, social support, goal setting, self-monitoring and relapse prevention. It involves a client-centred, one-to-one counselling approach and encourages individuals to develop an activity plan, tailored to their needs, readiness to change and lifestyle. The EC aims to encourage accumulated physical activity accumulating at least 30 minutes ofmoderate intensity activity on five days per week (Pate, et al., 1995, stage one, as discussed in Chapter 4). In addition, this level of physical activity may be easier for cardiac patients to incorporate into their daily routine and to sustainin the long term. Thus, the exercise consultation encourages individuals to integrate moderate intensity activity into their daily lives. In addition, EC can help maintain involvement in structured exercise in phases III and IV (SIGN, 2002)

    Search for tau neutrinos at PeV energies and beyond with the MAGIC telescopes

    The MAGIC telescopes, located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (2200 a.s.l.) in the Canary Island of La Palma, are placed on the top of a mountain, from where a window of visibility of about 5 deg in zenith and 80 deg in azimuth is open in the direction of the surrounding ocean. This permits to search for a signature of particle showers induced by earth-skimming cosmic tau neutrinos in the PeV to EeV energy range arising from the ocean. We have studied the response of MAGIC to such events, employing Monte Carlo simulations of upward-going tau neutrino showers. The analysis of the shower images shows that air showers induced by tau neutrinos can be discriminated from the hadronic background coming from a similar direction. We have calculated the point source acceptance and the expected event rates, for a sample of generic neutrino fluxes from photo-hadronic interactions in AGNs. The analysis of about 30 hours of data taken toward the sea leads to a point source sensitivity for tau neutrinos at the level of the down-going point source analysis of the Pierre Auger Observatory, if the AUGER observation time is dedicated to a similar amount by MAGIC.Comment: Proceedings of EPS-HEP 2017, European Physical Society conference on High Energy Physics, 5-12 July 2017, Venice, Italy. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1708.0614

    Can general practitioners influence the nation's health through a population approach to the provision of lifestyle advice?

    BACKGROUND: Lifestyle advice from general practitioners (GPs) has been shown to have a positive effect on population health. In practice, GPs provide lifestyle advice to a minority of their patients only, those who are high risk or already have symptoms. AIM: To look in depth at GPs' attitudes towards adopting a population approach to lifestyle advice and to use these results to identify ways of maximising the potential of GPs to affect population health. METHOD: Thirty-six GPs, purposively sampled by identifying characteristics likely to affect their health promotion activity, participated in a focus group study. Data from the focus groups were transcribed verbatim and analysed using standard methods. RESULTS: The main themes that emerged suggested that GPs do not take a population approach to lifestyle advice because they prefer a high risk approach and doubt their ability to be effective in a population approach. GPs believed that social, cultural, and environmental factors were the most important determinants of population health. Furthermore, they were concerned about the detrimental effects on the doctor-patient relationship of providing lifestyle advice to all patients. GPs believed that a multi-agency, centrally co-ordinated approach was the preferred way to improve population health and that their role should be limited to secondary prevention. CONCLUSION: Large amounts of resources would be necessary to convince GPs to adopt a population approach to lifestyle advice. Measures to tackle the social and environmental determinants of health may be a more effective and efficient means of improving the nation's health
