    The EXAFS spectroscopy equipment constructed from an asymmetrical cut flat monochromator and PSPC is applied to the structural determination of pure α-iron which has small difference (0.038nm) in the first and second nearest neighbour distance. The efficiency of the curve fitting method for the two shell model of known structure material (α-iron) is discussed, in addition to describing the details of the experimental procedure of our new type of spectrometer and of the EXAFS data analysis

    Improved Enamel Acid Resistance Using Biocompatible Nano-Hydroxyapatite Coating Method

    In this study, we attempted to develop a dental caries prevention method using a bioapatite (BioHap), an eggshell-derived apatite with nanoparticle size and biocompatibility, with a high-concentration fluoride tooth surface application method. The enamel acid resistance after the application of the proposed method was compared with that of a conventional topical application of fluoride using bovine tooth enamel as an example. The tooth samples were divided into three groups based on the preventive treatment applied, and an acid challenge was performed. The samples were evaluated for acid resistance using qualitative and quantitative analytical methods. The BioHap group demonstrated reduced enamel loss and improved micro-Vickers hardness, along with a thick coating layer, decreased reaction area depth, and decreased mineral loss value and lesion depth. The combination of BioHap with high-concentration fluoride led to the formation of a thick coating layer on the enamel surface and better suppression of demineralization than the conventional method, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The proposed biocompatible nano-hydroxyapatite coating method is expected to become a new standard for providing professional care to prevent dental caries

    Expression of cysLT1 and cysLT2 Receptor in Chronic Hyperplastic Eosinophilic Sinusitis

    Elevated production of cysteinyl leukotrienes (cysLTs) from sinus tissues and abundant sinus eosinophils are characteristic features of chronic hyperplastic eosinophilic sinusitis (CHS). CysLTs exert their action through G-protein-coupled receptors named cysLTs receptor type I (cysLT1R) and type II (cysLT2R). These expressions of cysLT receptors in the sinus mucosa have yet to be clarified and the relationship between eosinophilia and the expression of these receptors remains obscure. We compared the expressions of cysLT1R and cysLT2R in the sinus mucosa in patients with CHS, non-eosinophilic chronic sinusitis (NECS), and control sinus tissues; and analyzed the correlation between the expression of CysLTRs and the presence of sinus eosinophils by immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR. A significantly higher percentage of eosinophils expressing cysLT2R protein was observed in patients with CHS compared with NECS and controls. In addition, cysLT2R mRNA expression in CHS was significantly higher than in NECS and controls. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between cysLT2R mRNA expression and the number of infiltrated eosinophils. In contrast, the cysLT1R mRNA expression did not differ significantly among these groups. The effect of cysLTs on sinus eosinophils may be mediated through the cysLT2R in patients with CHS. These results may suggest the therapeutic benefit of cysLT2R antagonists in CHS

    COVID-19-Related Factors Delaying Dental Visits of Workers in Japan

    BACKGROUND: The aim of this research was to investigate the factors associated with postponing dental attendance amongst Japanese workers during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: We conducted an internet-based survey in Japan from November 24 to 29, 2021. The participants were selected from people registered with an online research company. The inclusion criteria for this study were full-time or part-time workers aged 20 to 69 years. Participants filled out a questionnaire about their oral health, behaviour, and working conditions. RESULTS: A total of 1840 participants were included in the analysis. Three hundred ninety-eight participants (21.5%) answered that they postponed dental attendance due to COVID-19. Multiple logistic regression showed that women were more likely to postpone dental attendance (odds ratio [OR], 1.74; 95% confidence interval, 1.33–2.26). Moreover, employment status, household income, changes in income, working at home, interdental cleaning device use, regular dental attendance, awareness of untreated teeth, and dental pain were also associated with postponing dental attendance. The results of decision tree analysis showed that regular dental attenders with dental pain were the most likely to postpone dental attendance. CONCLUSIONS: The characteristics of postponed dental visits for Japanese workers differ depending on whether one is a regular dental attender or not. Amongst regular dental attenders, worsening oral health due to interruptions in dental attendance is concerning. Meanwhile, untreated teeth might be neglected amongst nonregular dental attenders. Preventing patients from refraining from dental attendance, regardless of whether or not they are regular dental attenders, is important during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Compensation of hologram distortion by controlling defocus component in reference beam wavefront for angle multiplexed holograms

    Holographic memory has the potential to function as a recording system with a large capacity and high data-transfer-rate. Photopolymer materials are typically used as a write-once recording medium. When holograms are recorded on this medium, they can distort due to shrinkage or expansion of the materials, which degrades the reconstructed image and causes a higher bit error rate (bER) of the reproduced data. We propose optically compensating for hologram distortion by controlling aberration components in the reference beam wavefront while reproducing data, thereby improving the reproduced data quality. First, we investigated the relation between each aberration component of the reference beam and the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the reproduced data using numerical simulation and found that horizontal tilt and the defocus component affect the SNR. Next, we experimentally evaluated the reproduced data by controlling the defocus component in the reference beam and found that the bER of the reproduced data could be decreased by controlling the defocus center with respect to the hologram position and phase modulation depth of the defocus component. Then, we investigated a practical control method of the defocus component using an evaluation value similar to the definition of the SNR for actual data reproduction from holograms. Using a defocus controlled wavefront enabled us to decrease the bER from 3.54 x 10^-3 with a plane wave to 3.14 x 10^-4. We also investigated how to reduce the bERs of reproduced data in angle multiplexed holograms. By using a defocus controlled wavefront to compensate for hologram distortion on the 40th data page in 80-page angle multiplexed holograms, the bERs of all pages could be decreased to less than 1x10^-3. We showed that controlling the defocus component is an effective way to compensate for hologram distortion and to decrease the bER of reproduced data in holographic memory

    Improved Enamel Acid Resistance by Highly Concentrated Acidulated Phosphate Sodium Monofluorophosphate Solution

    Sodium monofluorophosphate (MFP) is a component of fluoride-containing dentifrices and is more biosafe than the conventional sodium fluoride (NaF). MFP can respond not only on the tooth surface layer but also deep into the enamel. We aim to confirm that high concentrations of acid phosphate MFP (AP-MFP, 9000 ppmF), used in professional care, could lead to a highly biosafe fluoride application method that acts through the deep enamel layers. Sample groups were respectively treated in vitro with NaF, acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF), MFP, and AP-MFP, and the samples were compared against an untreated group. Characterizations after fluoride application confirmed that MFP and AP-MFP treatments improved the acid resistance of enamel compared to that of conventional methods. Furthermore, the acid resistance of highly concentrated MFPs improved by using phosphoric acid. Although the acid resistance from the AP-MFP method is not as good as that using APF, AP-MFP can act both on the surface layer and deep into the enamel. Moreover, AP-MFP retains fluoride ions as much as APF does on the tooth surface. The proposed fluoride application method using AP-MFP introduces a dental treatment for acid resistance that is highly biosafe and penetrates deep layers of the enamel
