These robbers are able to steal the Christmas gifts while the Deaf residents are asleep. The conflict occurs when they confront with a deaf young boy who was determined to secretly videotape Santa Claus in the act of delivering Christmas presents.     Farmers\u27 Screening of Indigenous Fodder Trees and Shrubs in Kenya

    The lack of fodder quantity and quality is a constraint for small scale livestock production systems in central Kenya which are intensive or are rapidly becoming so. This study examined farmers’ knowledge about indigenous fodder trees and shrubs (IFTS) which are fed to livestock. The study consisted of a formal survey in three agroecological zones with mean annual rainfall varying from 750 to 1400 mm. Farmers rated IFTS for different qualities, which were analysed by Chi square. Differences of ratings among species for these qualities were significant (p\u3c0.05). The most promising species for the sub-humid zone, in terms of what farmers want to plant and in terms of preliminary nutritive analysis, were: Tithonia diversifolia, Commiphora zimmermanii, Ficus spp. and Trema orientalis. The species that show promise for the same reasons, in the semi-arid zones, are: Crotalaria goodiiformis, Aspilia mossambicensis, Indigofera lupatana, T. diversifolia, Grewia tembensis and Acacia ataxacantha

    Understanding students’ motivation towards proactive career behaviours through goal-setting theory and the job demands–resources model

    The graduate labour market is highly competitive but little is known about why students vary in their development of employability. This study contributes to the literature by applying goal-setting theory and the job demands–resources model to investigate how motivational processes influence students’ proactive career behaviours. We tested four hypotheses using structural equation modelling and moderation/mediation analysis using a nested model approach; 432 undergraduates from 21 UK universities participated in this cross-sectional study. The results showed that students higher in mastery approach had greater perceived employability mediated by two proactive career behaviours (skill development and network building). Students’ career goal commitment was associated with all four proactive career behaviours (career planning, skill development, career consultation and network building). Students’ academic and employment workloads did not negatively impact their proactive career behaviours. University tutors and career services should therefore encourage students to set challenging career goals that reflect mastery approach

    Changes in transmission of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) in England inferred from seroprevalence data.

    The factors leading to the global emergence of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) in 2014 as a cause of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in children are unknown. To investigate potential changes in virus transmissibility or population susceptibility, we measured the seroprevalence of EV-D68-specific neutralising antibodies in serum samples collected in England in 2006, 2011, and 2017. Using catalytic mathematical models, we estimate an approximately 50% increase in the annual probability of infection over the 10-year study period, coinciding with the emergence of clade B around 2009. Despite such increase in transmission, seroprevalence data suggest that the virus was already widely circulating before the AFM outbreaks and the increase of infections by age cannot explain the observed number of AFM cases. Therefore, the acquisition of or an increase in neuropathogenicity would be additionally required to explain the emergence of outbreaks of AFM. Our results provide evidence that changes in enterovirus phenotypes cause major changes in disease epidemiology

    Estrogenic and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of a Steroidal Indoxyl

    The estrogenic and anti-inflammatory activities of 3-methoxy-16, 17-seco-16-norestra-1,3,5-trien-15-(2'-indoxyliden)-17-oic acid is reported. After intraperitoneal administration, the dose of this compound required to reduce swelling of the rat paw by 50% (ED50) was 14.1 mg/kg using the carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema anti-inflammatory assay method. Indomethacin had an ED50 of 3.2 mg/kg in this assay while dexamethasone had an ED50 of 1.7 mg/kg. The estrogenic activity of the compound after intramuscular administration in rats was 0.72 relative to diethylstilbestrol, when the two compounds were assayed at three dose levels of 1.0, 0.3 and 0.1 mg/kg.     Learning agrobiodiversity: options for universities in Sub-Saharan Africa: Proceedings of a regional workshop, 21-23 January 2009, Nairobi, Kenya

    Agrobiodiversity needs to enter university curricula in a broader fashion, to prepare graduates for both conserving and using agrobiodiversity sustainably. To tackle this issue, the first regional consultation on agrobiodiversity education in Sub-Saharan Africa was held in January 2009 in Nairobi, Kenya. The workshop featured expert presentations on key aspects of agrobiodiversity, pointing at the knowledge and skills required in graduates. Workshop participants from 16 African and two European countries identified key issues for teaching and learning agrobiodiversity and outlined a framework for integrating the subject in university curricula. An action plan was developed and a task force was assigned to follow up the workshop recommendations
