Alternative versus conventional attitudes in higher agricultural education
From radical positions it is argued that it will take paradigmatic transformations to develop a sustainable agriculture and that values and attitudes have to be changed. To find out if teachers and students in higher agricultural education are motivated for radical changes a survey based on the Alternative-Conventional Agriculture Paradigm Scale (ACAP-scale) was conducted. The ACAP-scale shows how people relate to the alternative and conventional agricultural paradigm and it shows their overall understanding of how agriculture works and relates to the physical and social environment. This study showed that the ACAP-scale is a suitable method for quantitative assessment of attitudes to agriculture in a broader context. Among students and faculty members at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Denmark there exists significant differences in paradigmatic positions. Studentsâ course choices are, to some extent, influenced by their paradigmatic position, some courses enrol followers of either the alternative or the conventional agricultural paradigm, and females and older students hold more alternative views than males and younger students. It is concluded that the wide range of values and attitudes among students and teachers calls for new teaching methods, where values and attitudes are integrated. It cannot be taken for granted that teachers and students share the radical visions of sustainability as sometimes presupposed of bodies working for sustainable development

Holdninger og vÌrdier mü nødvendigvis spille en rolle i Landbohøjskolens uddannelser, da uddannelserne retter sig mod professioner, som udøves i et vÌrdipluralistisk samfund. Vi kan derfor ikke lade som om, vÌrdier og holdninger enten ikke eksisterer eller er ens for alle. Dette udfordrer den grundholdning, som prÌger Landbohøjskolen, hvor sükaldt objektiv faglighed er i højsÌdet

Social identities and risk: expert and lay imaginations on pesticide use
Expert-based environmental and health risk regulation is widely believed to suffer from a lack of public understanding and legitimacy. On controversial issues such as genetically modified organisms and food-related chemicals, a âlayâexpert discrepancyâ in the assessment of risks is clearly visible. In this article, we analyze the relationship between scientific experts and ordinary lay citizens in the context of risks from pesticide usage in Denmark. Drawing on concepts from the âsociology of scientific knowledgeâ (SSK), we contend that differences in risk perception must be understood at the level of social identities. On the basis of qualitative interviews with citizens and experts, respectively, we focus on the multiple ways in which identities come to be employed in actors' risk accounts. Empirically, we identify salient characteristics of âtypicalâ imagined experts and lay-people, while arguing that these conceptions vary identifiably in-between four groups of citizens and experts. On the basis of our findings, some implications for bridging the layâexpert discrepancy on risk issues are sketched out
DrivkrÌfter bag landmÌnds til- og fravalg af økologisk drift
I en lang ĂĽrrĂŚkke var økologisk jordbrug i Danmark i vĂŚkst, og det var nĂŚrmest utĂŚnkeligt at en større tilbagelĂŚgning kunne finde sted â der var end ikke et ord for et sĂĽdant fĂŚnomen. Imidlertid tyder analyser af avlerlisterne pĂĽ, at den tilgang der var i antallet af økologer i 1990âerne dĂŚkkede over et større antal omlĂŚggere kombineret med et antal bedrifter, der ophørte med økologisk drift. PĂĽ baggrund af den nuvĂŚrende situation med nogenlunde ligeligt fordelt tilgang, udvidelse og ophør med økologisk drift â i et arealmĂŚssigt perspektiv â kan der kun gisnes om, hvor det økologiske jordbrug bevĂŚger sig hen i de kommende ĂĽr. Dette indlĂŚg beskriver drivkrĂŚfter bag omlĂŚgning til økologisk jordbrug og tilbagelĂŚgning til konventionel drift pĂĽ baggrund af to forskellige undersøgelser, der begge er dele af forskningsprojektet âNaturkvalitet i økologisk jordbrugâ, delprojektet âLokalisering af økologisk jordbrugâ finansieret af FĂJO II. Begge studier er kvalitative. Intentionen har sĂĽledes ikke vĂŚret at vise hvor mange landmĂŚnds valg af om- eller tilbagelĂŚgning der kan tilskrives den ene eller den anden ĂĽrsag, men at opnĂĽ en dybere og bredere beskrivelse af disse ĂĽrsager, og herigennem at bidrage til videreudviklingen af det økologiske jordbrug
