Because of this, its sensing is indispensable for the diagnosis of many diseases. Among the materials used for the detection and quantification of H2O2, Prussian Blue (PB) has been highlighted due to its performance. Therefore, the search for alternatives or the improvement of PB performance is a challenge. In this context, our motivation was to evaluate how the ligand N-methylpyrazinium affects the structure and reactivity of Prussian Blue films produced from [Fe(CN)(5)(mpz)](2-) (PB-mpz). Based on the results, it was possible to conclude that the ligand is coordinated to the complex inside the PB framework and consequently contributes to the generation of a noncrystalline structure. The ions contained in buffer solutions can react with Prussian Blue by binding to Fe3+ and breaking the structure. In addition, a PB-mpz film in HCl/KCl showed higher sensitivity towards H2O2 than a PB film.Hydrogen peroxide is one of the most important molecules in chemical signaling in living organisms. The objective of this work was to evaluate vegetative rescue methods for the production of cuttings (clearcutting, full annealing, and half‑annealing) of red cedar (Toona ciliata var. australis) mature trees. The number of produced shoots was evaluated at 60, 120 and 180 days, as well as the correlation between stem mean diameter at breast height (DBH) and the number of sprouts. From the resulting sprouts of each method, cuttings were produced and subjected to cutting and removal of leaflets, and then received the application of indolbutyric acid (IBA) (0 and 6,000 mg L‑1). Evaluations were made for the influence of the following factors on plant survival and rooting: rescue method, collection time, number of leaflets of cuttings, and matrix tree, in the presence and absence of IBA. There was no correlation between the DBH of trees and the number of produced shoots. Clearcutting at 120 days provided the highest increase of shoots (15.31). Cuttings obtained from half‑annealing had higher survival (57.8%) and rooting (55.5%) rates. Cuttings with two pairs of preserved leaflets and treated with 6,000 mg L‑1 IBA showed higher rates of survival (65.5%) and rooting (56.7%). There was wide variation in survival and rooting capacity among matrix trees. The vegetative rescue and propagation by cuttings have potential for clonal multiplication of Australian red cedar mature trees.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar métodos de resgate vegetativo para a produção de estacas (corte raso, anelamento total e semianelamento) de árvores adultas de cedro-australiano (Toona ciliata var. australis).

Methods: Data collection involved institutions throughout the whole country, comprising 17 centers in 4 regions: Southeast (8), Northeast (5), South (3), and Center-West (1). The study population consists of patients over 18 years of age, and the types of operations recorded were: coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), mitral valve, aortic valve (either conventional or transcatheter), surgical correction of atrial fibrillation, cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and congenital heart diseases in adults. Results: 83.1% of patients came from the public health system (SUS), 9.6% from the supplemental (private insurance) healthcare systemsand 7.3% from private (out-of-pocket) clinic. Male patients comprised 66%, 30% were diabetics, 46% had dyslipidemia, 28% previously sustained a myocardial infarction, and 9.4% underwent prior cardiovascular surgery. Patients underwent coronary artery bypass surgery were 54.1% and 31.5% to valve surgery, either isolated or combined. The overall postoperative mortality up to the 7th postoperative day was 4%for CABG was 2.6%, and for valve operations, 4.4%. Conclusion: This first report outlines the consecution of the Brazilian surgical cardiac database, intended to serve primarily as a tool for providing information for clinical improvement and patient safety and constitute a basis for production of research protocols.Univ Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP EPM, Hosp Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilHosp Caridade Sao Vicente Paulo, Jundiai, SP, BrazilInst Med Integral Prof Fernando Figueira IMIP, Recife, PE, BrazilHosp Base FUNFARME & FAMERP, Sao Jose Do Rio Preto, SP, BrazilIMC, Sao Jose Do Rio Preto, SP, BrazilIrmandade Santa Casa Sao Paulo INCT HPV, Fac Ciencias Med Santa Casa Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilFundacao Univ Cardiol, Inst Cardiol Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, RS, BrazilInst Coracao Natal, Natal, RN, BrazilInst Cardiol Dist Fed, Brasilia, DF, BrazilUniv Fed Maranhao HU UFMA, Univ Hosp, Sao Luis, MA, BrazilHosp Evangelico, Cachoeiro De Itapemirim, ES, BrazilHosp Coracao Sergipe, Aracaju, SE, BrazilHosp Nossa Senhora Salete, Inst Cirurgia Cardiovasc ICCV, Cascavel, PR, BrazilHosp Wilson Rosado, Mossoro, RN, BrazilHosp Bosque Saude, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilHosp Univ Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, BrazilHosp Coracao HCor, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilHosp Coracao IP HCor, Ins Pesquisa, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilInst Coracao InCor, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP EPM, Hosp Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc

Association of Peripheral Arterial and Cardiovascular Diseases in Familial Hypercholesterolemia

    No full text
Background: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease characterized by an elevation in the serum levels of total cholesterol and of low-density lipoproteins (LDL- c). Known to be closely related to the atherosclerotic process, FH can determine the development of early obstructive lesions in different arterial beds. In this context, FH has also been proposed to be a risk factor for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Objective: This observational cross-sectional study assessed the association of PAD with other manifestations of cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as coronary artery and cerebrovascular disease, in patients with heterozygous FH. Methods: The diagnosis of PAD was established by ankle-brachial index (ABI) values ≤ 0.90. This study assessed 202 patients (35% of men) with heterozygous FH (90.6% with LDL receptor mutations), mean age of 51 ± 14 years and total cholesterol levels of 342 ± 86 mg /dL. Results: The prevalences of PAD and previous CVD were 17% and 28.2 %, respectively. On multivariate analysis, an independent association between CVD and the diagnosis of PAD was observed (OR = 2.50; 95% CI: 1.004 - 6.230; p = 0.049). Conclusion: Systematic screening for PAD by use of ABI is feasible to assess patients with FH, and it might indicate an increased risk for CVD. However, further studies are required to determine the role of ABI as a tool to assess the cardiovascular risk of those patients

Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells from Humans and Mice Differ in Proliferative Capacity and Genome Stability in Long-Term Cultures

    No full text
Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) are among the more attractive adult stem cell options for potential therapeutic applications. Here, we studied and compared the basic biological characteristics of ASCs isolated from humans (hASCs) and mice (mASCs) and maintained in identical culture conditions, which must be examined prior to considering further potential clinical applications. hASCs and mASCs were compared for immunophenotype, differentiation potential, cell growth characteristics, senescence, nuclear morphology, and DNA content. Although both strains of ASCs displayed a similar immunophenotype, the percentage of CD73(+) cells was markedly lower and CD31(+) was higher in mASC than in hASC cultures. The mean population doubling time was 98.08 +/- 6.15 h for hASCs and 52.58 +/- 3.74 h for mASCs. The frequency of nuclear aberrations was noticeably lower in hASCs than in mASCs regardless of the passage number. Moreover, as the cells went through several in vitro passages, mASCs showed changes in DNA content and cell cycle kinetics (frequency of hypodiploid, G0/G1, G2/M, and hyperdiploid cells), whereas all of these parameters remained constant in hASCs. Collectively, these results suggest that mASCs display higher proliferative capacity and are more unstable than hASCs in long-term cultures. These results underscore the need to consider specificities among model systems that may influence outcomes when designing potential human applications.Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP)[01/0009-0]Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP)[05/54695-3]Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP)[05/57591-4]Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP)[04/06784-4]Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP)[06/57937-0]Ministerio da Ciencia e Tecnologia/Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico/Ministerio da Saude/Departamento Ciencia e Tecnologia (MCT/CNPq/MS/DE-CIT)[552324/20005-1]Ministerio da Ciencia e Tecnologia/Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico/Ministerio da Saude/Departamento Ciencia e Tecnologia (MCT/CNPq/MS/DE-CIT)[10120104096700
