The Post-Fukushima Protest Cycle and Its Historical Context

Die ersten fünf Kapitel des 2018 von Chiavacci und Obinger veröffentlichten Sammelbandes untersuchen die Geschichte japanischer Proteste. Kapitel sechs bis neun begutachten den post-2011 Protest-Zyklus nach der japanischen Dreifachkatastrophe von Erdbeben, Tsunami und Nuklearunfall. Neben zwei anthropologischen Beiträgen verlässt sich die Veröffentlichung auf Konzepte der politischen Soziologie, z.B. Social Movement Theory. Laut Buch hat sich post-2011 eine neue Protest-Welle gebildet, welche ältere zivilgesellschaftliche und aktivistische Netzwerke stützten.The first five chapters of Chiavacci and Obinger’s 2018 edited volume study the historical context of the post-Fukushima protest wave. Chapters six to nine examine the 2011-5 protest cycle. Other than two anthropological outliers, the publication relies on historical political sociology and its established branches of social movement theory, civil society studies, and the concept of citizenship. Overall, the book indicates that a new cycle of protest has emerged since 2011, which has tapped into abeyant, older activist networks and an invisible but active civil society

The Graduate Assistant in Technical Services: Reflecting on a Real-World Work Experience

This session will feature two perspectives reflecting on a Graduate Assistant Technical Services position at The University of Southern Mississippi. In 2021 the Technical Services department began a new initiative to hire a LIS graduate student to work part-time in the department. This was not a practicum but regular employment. The department envisioned that the GA\u27s experience would serve as an introduction to technical services work as close to a real-world work experience as possible while exposing them to different areas of technical services such as acquisitions and cataloging. The presenters, a Graduate Assistant and supervising Catalog Librarian, will each reflect on the past year and share what worked well, challenges faced, and recommendations for best practices

Manufacturing of tubular dead-end membranes by continuous thermoplastic extrusion

Dense and gastight dead-end tubular Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF) membranes were fabricated by thermoplastic extrusion. Optimal feedstocks for the extrusion of dead-end tubular structures were obtained for a feedstock consisting of 89.83 wt% BSCF powder, 5.63 wt% ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), 3.56 wt% paraffin wax (PW), and 0.98 wt% stearic acid (SA). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to determine the thermal characteristics of the feedstock and to characterize the amount of binder removed during the wicking step. Straight and round dead-end tubular membranes with wall thickness of 0.5 mm could be achieved after sintering. The gastightness test showed that the membranes were leak-tight up to a pressure of 35 bar

Very Low Dose Fetal Exposure to Chernobyl Contamination Resulted in Increases in Infant Leukemia in Europe and Raises Questions about Current Radiation Risk Models

Following contamination from the Chernobyl accident in April 1986 excess infant leukemia (0–1 y) was reported from five different countries, Scotland, Greece, Germany, Belarus and Wales and Scotland combined. The cumulative absorbed doses to the fetus, as conventionally assessed, varied from 0.02 mSv in the UK through 0.06 mSv in Germany, 0.2 mSv in Greece and 2 mSv in Belarus, where it was highest. Nevertheless, the effect was real and given the specificity of the cohort raised questions about the safety of applying the current radiation risk model of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) to these internal exposures, a matter which was discussed in 2000 by Busby and Cato [7,8] and also in the reports of the UK Committee examining Radiation Risk from Internal Emitters. Data on infant leukemia in the United Kingdom, chosen on the basis of the cohorts defined by the study of Greece were supplied by the UK Childhood Cancer Research Group. This has enabled a study of leukemia in the combined infant population of 15,466,845 born in the UK, Greece, and Germany between 1980 and 1990. Results show a statistically significant excess risk RR = 1.43 (95% CI 1.13 < RR < 1.80 (2-tailed); p = 0.0025) in those born during the defined peak exposure period of 01/07/86 to 31/12/87 compared with those born between 01/01/80 and 31/12/85 and 01/01/88 and 31/12/90. The excess risks in individual countries do not increase monotonically with the conventionally calculated doses, the relation being biphasic, increasing sharply at low doses and falling at high doses. This result is discussed in relation to fetal/cell death at higher doses and also to induction of DNA repair. Since the cohort is chosen specifically on the basis of exposure to internal radionuclides, the result can be expressed as evidence for a significant error in the conventional modeling for such internal fetal exposures

Borderline personality disorder is associated with lower confidence in perception of emotional body movements

Much recent research has shown that personality disorders are associated with an altered emotion perception. Whereas most of this research was conducted with stimuli such as faces, the present study examined possible differences in the perception of emotions expressed via body language and body movements. 30 patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and 30 non-patients observed video scenes of emotional human interactions conveyed by point–light displays, rated the depicted valence, and judged their confidence in this rating. Patients with BPD showed no altered emotion perception (i.e., no biased perception in either a negative or a positive direction). They did not perceive and evaluate depicted emotions as being more extreme than healthy controls. However, patients with BPD showed less confidence in their perception of depicted emotions, especially when these were difficult to identify. The findings extend insights on altered emotion perception in persons with BPD to include the field of body movements
