Effects of disorder in location and size of fence barriers on molecular motion in cell membranes
The effect of disorder in the energetic heights and in the physical locations
of fence barriers encountered by transmembrane molecules such as proteins and
lipids in their motion in cell membranes is studied theoretically. The
investigation takes as its starting point a recent analysis of a periodic
system with constant distances between barriers and constant values of barrier
heights, and employs effective medium theory to treat the disorder. The
calculations make possible, in principle, the extraction of confinement
parameters such as mean compartment sizes and mean intercompartmental
transition rates from experimentally reported published observations. The
analysis should be helpful both as an unusual application of effective medium
theory and as an investigation of observed molecular movements in cell
membranes.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Symmetric Teleparallel Gravity: Some exact solutions and spinor couplings
In this paper we elaborate on the symmetric teleparallel gravity (STPG)
written in a non-Riemannian spacetime with nonzero nonmetricity, but zero
torsion and zero curvature. Firstly we give a prescription for obtaining the
nonmetricity from the metric in a peculiar gauge. Then we state that under a
novel prescription of parallel transportation of a tangent vector in this
non-Riemannian geometry the autoparallel curves coincides with those of the
Riemannian spacetimes. Subsequently we represent the symmetric teleparallel
theory of gravity by the most general quadratic and parity conserving
lagrangian with lagrange multipliers for vanishing torsion and curvature. We
show that our lagrangian is equivalent to the Einstein-Hilbert lagrangian for
certain values of coupling coefficients. Thus we arrive at calculating the
field equations via independent variations. Then we obtain in turn conformal,
spherically symmetric static, cosmological and pp-wave solutions exactly.
Finally we discuss a minimal coupling of a spin-1/2 field to STPG.Comment: Accepted for publication in the International Journal of Modern

Mercury Contamination in Soil, Tailing and Plants on Agricultural Fields Near Closed Gold Mine in Buru Island, Maluku
Agricultural productivity in Buru Island, Maluku is threatened by tailings which are generated from formerly gold mine in Botak Mountain in Wamsait Village. Gold that extracted by using mercury was carried out in mining area as well agricultural field. High content of mercury in tailings and agricultural field pose a serious problem of food production and quality; and further endangers human health. The purpose of this research was to determine the contaminant level of mercury in tailing, soil and its accumulation in edible part of some food crops. Soil, tailing and plant samples for Hg testing were taken by purposive method based on mining activities in Waelata, Waeapo and Namlea sub district. Six soil samples had been analyzed for their chemical properties. Total mercury levels in tailings and plants were measured by Atomic Adsorption Spectrophotometer. This study showed that agricultural field where tailings were deposited contained Hg above the threshold but agricultural area which is far from hot spot did not. Most edible parts of food crops accumulated mercury more than Indonesian threshold for mercury content in food. This evidence explained that tailings deposited on the surface of agricultural field had an impact on soil quality and crop quality. Tailing accumulated on soil will decreased soil quality since naturally soil fertility in agricultural field in Buru is low
Molecular motion in cell membranes: analytic study of fence-hindered random walks
A theoretical calculation is presented to describe the confined motion of
transmembrane molecules in cell membranes. The study is analytic, based on
Master equations for the probability of the molecules moving as random walkers,
and leads to explicit usable solutions including expressions for the molecular
mean square displacement and effective diffusion constants. One outcome is a
detailed understanding of the dependence of the time variation of the mean
square displacement on the initial placement of the molecule within the
confined region. How to use the calculations is illustrated by extracting
(confinement) compartment sizes from experimentally reported published
observations from single particle tracking experiments on the diffusion of
gold-tagged G-protein coupled mu-opioid receptors in the normal rat kidney cell
membrane, and by further comparing the analytical results to observations on
the diffusion of phospholipids, also in normal rat kidney cells.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Synthesis and characterization of ionic block copolymer templated calcium phosphate nanocomposites
Self-assembling thermo-reversibly gelling anionic and zwitterionic pentablock copolymers were used as templates for precipitation of calcium phosphate nanostructures, controlling their size and ordered structural arrangement. Calcium and phosphate ions were dissolved in a block-copolymer micellar dispersion at low temperatures. Aging at ambient temperature produced inorganic nanoparticles, presumably nucleated by ionic interactions. The self-assembled nanocomposites were characterized by small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). 1H-31P NMR with 1H spin diffusion from polymer to phosphate proved the formation of nanocomposites, with inorganic particle sizes from ∼2 nm, characterized by 1H-31P dipolar couplings, to \u3e 100 nm. TEM analysis showed polymer micelles surrounded by calcium phosphate. SAXS attested that a significant fraction of the calcium phosphate was templated by the polymer micelles. SANS data indicated that the order of the polymer was enhanced by the inorganic phase. The nanocomposite gels exhibited higher moduli than the neat polymer gels. The calcium phosphate was characterized by TGA, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution TEM, and various NMR techniques. An unusual crystalline phase with \u3e2 chemically and \u3e3 magnetically inequivalent HPO4 2- ions was observed with the zwitterionic copolymer, highlighting the influence of the polymer on the calcium phosphate crystallization. The inorganic fraction of the nanocomposite was around 30 wt % of the dried hydrogel. Thus, a significant fraction of calcium phosphate has been templated by the tailored self-assembling ionic block copolymers, providing a bottom-up approach to nanocomposite synthesis
Structural development of HDPE in injection molding
This study investigated some relevant structure/properties relationships in shear-controlled orientation in injection molding (SCORIM) of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). SCORIM was used to deliberately induce a strong anisotropic character in the HDPE microstructure. Three grades with different molecular weight characteristics were molded into tensile test bars, which were subsequently characterized in terms of the mechanical behavior by tensile tests and microhardness measurements. The structure developed upon processing was also characterized by polarized light microscopy (PLM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). SCORIM allows the production of very stiff molded parts, exhibiting a very well-defined laminated morphology. This morphology is associated with both an M-shaped microhardness profile and a pronounced mechanical anisotropy. These characteristics are supported by an analogous variation in the crystallinity and a high level of molecular orientation, as indicated, respectively, by calorimetric measurements and X-ray diffraction resultsSubprograma Ciência e Tecnologia do 2° Quadro Comunitário de Apoio, Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia (Portugal)
The nonlinear time-dependent response of isotactic polypropylene
Tensile creep tests, tensile relaxation tests and a tensile test with a
constant rate of strain are performed on injection-molded isotactic
polypropylene at room temperature in the vicinity of the yield point. A
constitutive model is derived for the time-dependent behavior of
semi-crystalline polymers. A polymer is treated as an equivalent network of
chains bridged by permanent junctions. The network is modelled as an ensemble
of passive meso-regions (with affine nodes) and active meso-domains (where
junctions slip with respect to their positions in the bulk medium with various
rates). The distribution of activation energies for sliding in active
meso-regions is described by a random energy model. Adjustable parameters in
the stress--strain relations are found by fitting experimental data. It is
demonstrated that the concentration of active meso-domains monotonically grows
with strain, whereas the average potential energy for sliding of junctions and
the standard deviation of activation energies suffer substantial drops at the
yield point. With reference to the concept of dual population of crystalline
lamellae, these changes in material parameters are attributed to transition
from breakage of subsidiary (thin) lamellae in the sub-yield region to
fragmentation of primary (thick) lamellae in the post-yield region of
deformation.Comment: 29 pages, 12 figure
Embrittlement in CN3MN Grade Superaustenitic Stainless Steels
Superaustenitic stainless steels (SSS) are widely used in extreme environments such as off-shore oil wells, chemical and food processing equipment, and seawater systems due to their excellent corrosion resistance and superior toughness. The design of the corresponding heat treatment process is crucial to create better mechanical properties. In this respect, the short-term annealing behavior of CN3MN grade SSS was investigated by a combined study of Charpy impact tests, hardness measurements, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Specimens were heat treated at 1200 K (927 A degrees C) for up to 16 minutes annealing time and their impact strengths and hardnesses were tested. The impact toughness was found to decrease to less than the half of the initial values while hardness stayed the same. Detailed fracture surface analyses revealed a ductile to brittle failure transition for relatively short annealing times. Brittle fracture occurred in both intergranular and transgranular modes. SEM and TEM indicated precipitation of nano-sized intermetallics, accounting for the intergranular embrittlement, along the grain boundaries with respect to annealing time. The transgranular fracture originated from linear defects seen to exist within the grains. Close observation of such defects revealed stacking-fault type imperfections, which lead to step-like cracking observed in microlength scales
