Constructing Dirac linear fermions in terms of non-linear Heisenberg spinors

We show that the massive (or massless) neutrinos can be described as special states of Heisenberg nonlinear spinors. As a by-product of this decomposition a particularly attractive consequence appears: the possibility of relating the existence of only three species of mass-less neutrinos to such internal non-linear structure. At the same time it allows the possibility that neutrino oscillation can occurs even for massless neutrinos

A role for the cleaved cytoplasmic domain of E-cadherin in the nucleus

Cell-cell contacts play a vital role in intracellular signaling, although the molecular mechanisms of these signaling pathways are not fully understood. E-cadherin, an important mediator of cell-cell adhesions, has been shown to be cleaved by γ-secretase. This cleavage releases a fragment of E-cadherin, E-cadherin C-terminal fragment 2 (E-cad/CTF2), into the cytosol. Here, we study the fate and function of this fragment. First, we show that coexpression of the cadherin-binding protein, p120 catenin (p120), enhances the nuclear translocation of E-cad/CTF2. By knocking down p120 with short interfering RNA, we also demonstrate that p120 is necessary for the nuclear localization of E-cad/CTF2. Furthermore, p120 enhances and is required for the specific binding of E-cad/CTF2 to DNA. Finally, we show that E-cad/CTF2 can regulate the p120-Kaiso-mediated signaling pathway in the nucleus. These data indicate a novel role for cleaved E-cadherin in the nucleus

Passive Sole Constraining Method to Stabilize 3D Passive Dynamic Walking

Inspired by the function of a toe and a lateral arch of a human foot, we propose a method to stabilize the biped walk by attaching unactuated toes and lateral arches. The toes and lateral arches work as adaptive braking of sagittal and lateral directions. They touch on the ground at the angle where the biped exceedingly inclines. After touching on the floor, the center of rotation changes at the landing positions. This change causes the reduction of the exceeding angular velocities toward sagittal and lateral directions. By setting appropriate heights of the toe and lateral arch during the swing phase, the walking robot is expected to be stabilized. To analyze the effects of the toe, we derived equations of motions and the state transition functions for a simplified 3D passive dynamic walker with toes. We clarified the potential stabilizing effect of the method from numerical simulations and preliminary experiments by a real-world biped with toes. Note that the proper setting of heights and the verification of the effect of lateral arches are on the way

Calculation of atmospheric neutrino flux using the interaction model calibrated with atmospheric muon data

    Get PDF
Using the ``modified DPMJET-III'' model explained in the previous paper, we calculate the atmospheric neutrino flux. The calculation scheme is almost the same as HKKM04 \cite{HKKM2004}, but the usage of the ``virtual detector'' is improved to reduce the error due to it. Then we study the uncertainty of the calculated atmospheric neutrino flux summarizing the uncertainties of individual components of the simulation. The uncertainty of KK-production in the interaction model is estimated by modifying FLUKA'97 and Fritiof 7.02 so that they also reproduce the atmospheric muon flux data correctly, and the calculation of the atmospheric neutrino flux with those modified interaction models. The uncertainties of the flux ratio and zenith angle dependence of the atmospheric neutrino flux are also studied

An ion ring in a linear multipole trap for optical frequency metrology

A ring crystal of ions trapped in a linear multipole trap is studied as a basis for an optical frequency standard. The equilibrium conditions and cooling possibilities are discussed through an analytical model and molecular dynamics simulations. A configuration which reduces the frequency sensitivity to the fluctuations of the number of trapped ions is proposed. The systematic shifts for the electric quadrupole transition of calcium ions are evaluated for this ring configuration. This study shows that a ring of 10 or 20 ions allows to reach a short term stability better than for a single ion without introducing limiting long term fluctuations

    Astrophysical Neutrino Telescopes

This review describes telescopes designed to study neutrinos from astrophysical sources. These sources include the Sun and Supernovae emitting neutrino energies up to tens of MeV, atmospheric neutrino sources caused by cosmic ray interactions and other sources generating neutrino energies ranging up to 1×10201\times 10^{20} eV. Measurements with these telescopes also provide information on neutrino properties including clear evidence for neutrino flavor change. Telescopes in operation in the past and present are described, along with plans for future instruments to expand this rapidly growing field of particle astrophysics.Comment: 28 pages, 31 figures, Invited review article submitted to Review of Scientific Instruments May 19, 200

Transition in velocity and grouping of arc spot on different nanostructured tungsten electrodes

AbstractBehavior of arc spots was investigated in detail using a nanostructured tungsten specimen with different thicknesses of the nanostructured layer. From the observation using a fast framing camera, it was found that the velocity of the arc spots significantly altered as passing the boundary of the two layers. The changes in spot velocity and spot width were discussed theoretically using the ecton model. The fractal dimension of the arc trail evaluated by using a box-counting method was significantly changed. Also, the width of arc trail was increased with the nanostructured layer thickness. From the SEM analysis of the specimen, the amount of tungsten eroded by arcing for two different thickness cases was estimated, and the erosion rates were discussed
