    Dropout and completion in higher education in Europe: main report

    Improving completion and reducing dropout in higher education are key concerns for higher education in Europe. This study on dropout and completion in higher education in Europe demonstrates that national governments and higher education institutions use three different study success objectives: completion, time-to-degree and retention. To address these objectives policy makers at national and institutional level apply various policy instruments. These can be categorized under three main policy headings: financial incentives; information and support for students; and organizational issues. The evidence indicates that countries that have more explicit study success objectives, targets and policies are likely to be more successful. Particularly if the policy approach is comprehensive and consistent. As such, it is important that study success is an issue in the information provision to (prospective) students, in financial incentives for students and institutions, in quality assurance, and in the education pathways offered to students. Furthermore, increasing the responsibility of higher education institutions for study success, for example in the area of selecting, matching, tracking, counselling, mentoring and integrating students in academic life is clearly effective. Finally, to support the policy debate and monitoring of study success evidence, there is a need for more systematic international comparative data and thorough analysis of the effectiveness of study success policie

    Nonequilibrium evolution in scalar O(N) models with spontaneous symmetry breaking

    We consider the out-of-equilibrium evolution of a classical condensate field and its quantum fluctuations for a scalar O(N) model with spontaneously broken symmetry. In contrast to previous studies we do not consider the large N limit, but the case of finite N, including N=1, i.e., plain λϕ4\lambda \phi^ 4 theory. The instabilities encountered in the one-loop approximation are prevented, as in the large-N limit, by back reaction of the fluctuations on themselves, or, equivalently, by including a resummation of bubble diagrams. For this resummation and its renormalization we use formulations developed recently based on the effective action formalism of Cornwall, Jackiw and Tomboulis. The formulation of renormalized equations for finite N derived here represents a useful tool for simulations with realistic models. Here we concentrate on the phase structure of such models. We observe the transition between the spontaneously broken and the symmetric phase at low and high energy densities, respectively.     Multicentre reference values for cardiac magnetic resonance imaging derived ventricular size and function for children aged 0-18 years

    AIMS: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is an important tool in the assessment of paediatric cardiac disease. Reported reference values of ventricular volumes and masses in the paediatric population are based on small cohorts and several methodologic differences between studies exist. We sought to create steady-state free precession (SSFP) CMR reference values for biventricular volumes and mass by combining data of previously published studies and re-analysing these data in a standardized manner. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 141 healthy children (68 boys) from three European centres underwent cine-SSFP CMR imaging. Cardiac structures were manually contoured for end-diastolic and end-systolic phases in the short-axis orientation according to current standardized CMR post-processing guidelines. Volumes and masses were derived from these contours. Age-related reference curves were constructed using the lambda mu sigma method. Median age was 12.7 years (range 0.6-18.5). We report biventricular volumes and masses, unindexed and indexed for body surface area, stratified by age groups. In general, boys had approximately 15% higher biventricular volumes and masses compared with girls. Only in children aged <6 years old no gender differences could be observed. Left ventricle ejection fraction was slightly higher in boys in this study population (median 67% vs. 65%, P = 0.016). Age-related reference curves showed non-linear relations between age and cardiac parameters. CONCLUSION: We report volumetric SSFP CMR imaging reference values for children aged 0-18 years old in a relatively large multi-centre cohort. These references can be used in the follow-up of paedi

    An assessment of Evans' unified field theory I

    Evans developed a classical unified field theory of gravitation and electromagnetism on the background of a spacetime obeying a Riemann-Cartan geometry. This geometry can be characterized by an orthonormal coframe theta and a (metric compatible) Lorentz connection Gamma. These two potentials yield the field strengths torsion T and curvature R. Evans tried to infuse electromagnetic properties into this geometrical framework by putting the coframe theta to be proportional to four extended electromagnetic potentials A; these are assumed to encompass the conventional Maxwellian potential in a suitable limit. The viable Einstein-Cartan(-Sciama-Kibble) theory of gravity was adopted by Evans to describe the gravitational sector of his theory. Including also the results of an accompanying paper by Obukhov and the author, we show that Evans' ansatz for electromagnetism is untenable beyond repair both from a geometrical as well as from a physical point of view.     Chaos assisted tunnelling with cold atoms

    In the context of quantum chaos, both theory and numerical analysis predict large fluctuations of the tunnelling transition probabilities when irregular dynamics is present at the classical level. We consider here the non-dissipative quantum evolution of cold atoms trapped in a time-dependent modulated periodic potential generated by two laser beams. We give some precise guidelines for the observation of chaos assisted tunnelling between invariant phase space structures paired by time-reversal symmetry.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.     Physics, Topology, Logic and Computation: A Rosetta Stone

    In physics, Feynman diagrams are used to reason about quantum processes. In the 1980s, it became clear that underlying these diagrams is a powerful analogy between quantum physics and topology: namely, a linear operator behaves very much like a "cobordism". Similar diagrams can be used to reason about logic, where they represent proofs, and computation, where they represent programs. With the rise of interest in quantum cryptography and quantum computation, it became clear that there is extensive network of analogies between physics, topology, logic and computation. In this expository paper, we make some of these analogies precise using the concept of "closed symmetric monoidal category".
