    Evaluating social inclusion: An adaptable measure for use on college campuses

    Gender and sexual identity discrimination are commonly reported among persons of non-heterosexual or non-cisgender identities. Sexual and gender minority (SGM) students are more likely to experience discrimination, hate crimes, poverty, sexually transmitted infections, anxiety, and depression compared to heterosexual and cisgender individuals. These marginalized experiences create a unique need for education, resources, support, and community. Greater awareness of sexual and gender minorities encourages college students to feel comfortable sharing their experiences, and openly identifying as a sexual and/or gender minority. Consequently, to retain the full breadth of diversity within university communities, centers on campus that provide programming, education, and advocacy for minority students are essential for an inclusive campus climate that nurtures diverse student populations. Given the dearth in empirical instruments to support social inclusion among Sexual and Gender Minorities on college campuses, the purpose of this research was to, 1.) Develop a meaningful measure for use in the evaluation of gender identity and sexuality among college students and their perceived social inclusion through the lens of a social inclusion center; and 2.) Include questions addressing efficacy of relevant social inclusion centers for SGM students, staff, faculty, and their allies. This research focuses on self-report data collected through the Gender and Sexual Inclusion, Knowledge, and Attitude Survey from staff, faculty, and undergraduate students from a small liberal arts college in the Pacific Northwest (N = 218)

    Period doubling and spatiotemporal chaos in periodically forced CO oxidation on Pt(110)

    Periodic forcing of chemical turbulence in the catalytic CO oxidation on Pt(110) can induce a period doubling cascade to chaos. Using a forcing frequency near the second harmonic of the system's natural frequency, and carefully increasing the forcing amplitude, the system successively exhibits spiral wave turbulence, resonant pattern formation, and chaotic oscillations. In the latter case, global coupling induces strong spatial correlation. Experimental results are presented as well as numerical simulations using a realistic model. Good agreement is found between experiment and theory. The results give further insight into the complex nature of reaction-diffusion systems and are of high importance regarding control strategies on such systems. The presented setup enhances the range of achievable dynamical states and allows for new experimental investigations on the dynamics of extended oscillatory systems

    Pattern formation in 4:1 resonance of the periodically forced CO oxidation on Pt(110)

    Periodically forced oscillatory reaction-diffusion systems may show complex spatiotemporal patterns. At high-frequency resonant forcing, multiple-phase patterns can be found. In the present work, the dynamics of turbulent CO oxidation on Pt(110), forced with the fourth harmonic of the system's natural frequency, is investigated. Experiments result in subharmonic entrainment, where the system locks to a quarter of the forcing frequency. Cluster patterns are observed, where different parts of the pattern show a defined phase difference. The experimental results are compared with numerical simulations using the realistic Krischer-Eiswirth-Ertl model for catalytic CO oxidation. Using the fourth harmonic of an uncoupled surface element's natural frequency, we find 3:1 entrainment with three-phase cluster patterns in a wide parameter range of forcing amplitudes and frequency detuning. Numerical analysis of the spatially extended, turbulent system reveals a remarkable upshift of the mean oscillation frequency compared to homogeneous oscillations. Using the fourth harmonic of the most prominent frequency found in the turbulent system results in four-phase patterns with partial or full 4:1 entrainment, depending on the forcing parameters chosen

    Resonant periodic forcing is applied to catalytic CO oxidation on platinum (110) in the oscillatory regime. The external parameters are chosen such that the unperturbed system spontaneously develops chemical turbulence. By periodically modulating the CO partial pressure, changes in the spatiotemporal behaviour of the system can be induced: the turbulent behaviour is suppressed and frequency locked patterns with sub-harmonic entrainment develop.     A sobrevida do bebê humano é possibilitada pelo sistema de apego, na medida em que ele busca proximidade, emitindo comportamentos mediadores em direção a uma figura que lhe proporciona segurança. Reflexões provindas da existência de uma intersubjetividade inata e evidências de habilidades mais refinadas do que se conhecia à época da formulação da teoria de Bowlby levaram à hipótese de que o comportamento de apego pode ser observado antes do proposto por esse autor. Empreendeu-se um estudo de caso, em que se analisaram videogravações do primeiro semestre de vida de Marina. Selecionaram-se e analisaram-se microgeneticamente episódios de comportamento diferencial do bebê com seus cuidadores antes dos seis meses de idade; e mapearam-se os comportamentos mediadores com cada cuidador. O comportamento diferencial com uma figura discriminada foi visualizado já aos três meses de vida. Discutiram-se os processos dialógicos e culturais que repercutiram na seleção da mãe como figura de apego

    CD98 Increases Renal Epithelial Cell Proliferation by Activating MAPKs

    CD98 heavy chain (CD98hc) is a multifunctional transmembrane spanning scaffolding protein whose extracellular domain binds with light chain amino acid transporters (Lats) to form the heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HATs). It also interacts with β1 and β3 integrins by its transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains. This interaction is proposed to be the mechanism whereby CD98 mediates cell survival and growth via currently undefined signaling pathways. In this study, we determined whether the critical function of CD98-dependent amino acid transport also plays a role in cell proliferation and defined the signaling pathways that mediate CD98-dependent proliferation of murine renal inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD) cells. We demonstrate that downregulating CD98hc expression resulted in IMCD cell death. Utilizing overexpression studies of CD98hc mutants that either lacked a cytoplasmic tail or were unable to bind to Lats we showed that CD98 increases serum-dependent cell proliferation by a mechanism that requires the CD98hc cytoplasmic tail. We further demonstrated that CD98-dependent amino acid transport increased renal tubular epithelial cell proliferation by a mechanism that does not require the CD98hc cytoplasmic tail. Both these mechanisms of increased renal tubular epithelial cell proliferation are mediated by Erk and p38 MAPK signaling. Although increased amino transport markedly activated mTor signaling, this pathway did not alter cell proliferation. Thus, these studies demonstrate that in IMCD cells, the cytoplasmic and extracellular domains of CD98hc regulate cell proliferation by distinct mechanisms that are mediated by common MAPK signaling pathways

    Prognostic significance of L-type amino acid transporter 1 expression in resectable stage I–III nonsmall cell lung cancer

    The clinical significance of L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) expression remains unclear, whereas many experimental studies have demonstrated that LAT1 is associated with the proliferation of cancer cells. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of LAT1 in patients with nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A total of 321 consecutive patients with completely resected pathologic stage I–III NSCLC were retrospectively reviewed. Expression of LAT1 and proliferative activity, as determined by the Ki-67 labelling index, was also evaluated immunohistochemically and correlated with the prognosis of patients who underwent complete resection of the tumour. Expression of LAT1 was positive in 163 patients (51%) (29% of adenocaricnoma (58 of 200 patients), 91% of squamous cell carcinoma (91 of 100 patients), and 67% of large cell carcinoma (14 of 21 patients)). The 5-year survival rate of LAT1-positive patients (51.8%) was significantly worse than that of LAT1-negative patients (87.8%; P<0.001). L-type amino acid transporter 1 expression was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis and disease stage. Multivariate analysis confirmed that positive expression of LAT1 was an independent factor for predicting a poor prognosis. There was a significant correlation between LAT1 expression and Ki-67 labelling index. LAT1 expression is a promising pathological factor to predict the prognosis in patients with resectable stage I–III NSCLC

    The multifunctional solute carrier 3A2 (SLC3A2) confers a poor prognosis in the highly proliferative breast cancer subtypes

    Background: Breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease characterised by variant biology, metabolic activity and patient outcome. This study aimed to evaluate the biological and prognostic value of the membrane solute carrier, SLC3A2 in BC with emphasis on the intrinsic molecular subtypes. Methods: SLC3A2 was assessed at the genomic level, using METABRIC data (n=1,980), and proteomic level, using immunohistochemistry on TMA sections constructed from a large well-characterised primary BC cohort (n=2,500). SLC3A2 expression was correlated with clinicopathological parameters, molecular subtypes, and patient outcome. Results: SLC3A2 mRNA and protein expression were strongly correlated with higher tumour grade and poor Nottingham prognostic index (NPI). High expression of SLC3A2 was observed in triple negative (TN), HER2+, and ER+ high proliferation subtypes. SLC3A2 mRNA and protein expression were significantly associated with the expression of c-MYC in all BC subtypes (p<0.001). High expression of SLC3A2 protein was associated with poor patient outcome (p<0.001)), but only in the ER+ high proliferation (p=0.01) and triple negative (p=0.04) subtypes. In multivariate analysis SLC3A2 protein was an independent risk factor for shorter breast cancer specific survival (p<0.001). Conclusions: SLC3A2 appears to play a role in the aggressive BC subtypes driven by MYC and could act as a potential prognostic marker. Functional assessment is necessary to reveal its potential therapeutic value in the different BC subtypes
