Assessment of P-wave dispersion on 12-lead electrocardiography in students who exercise regularly

    No full text
Background: P-wave dispersion, an electrocardiographic marker, is an independent predictor of atrial fibrillation. P-wave dispersion is associated with inhomogeneous and discontinuous propagation of sinus impulses. The aim of this study was to investigate P-wave dispersion in students who apply for registration to School of Physical Education and Sports

The Effect of Leukospermia on Sperm Parameters in Couples With Unexplained Infertility

Objective: The association between seminal leukocytes and semen quality is still a matter of debate in the literature. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of leukospermia on semen parameters in unexplained infertile men. Materials and Methods: Semen analysis performed between June 2011 and December 2011 at infertility and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic of a tertiary research and education hospital in Ankara were studied retrospectively. Results of the male partners of the couples with unexplained infertility were selected. A total of 1637 semen analysis of intrauterine insemination and in-vitro fertilization cycles were included in the study. Results of oligospermic and azospermic males were excluded. Semen parameters of 348 men with leukospermia (Group I) and 1289 without leukospermia (Group II) were compared. Results: Leukospermia (0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that leukospermia occurs frequently in in male partners of couples with unexplained infertility. Although motility and morphology do not seem to be influenced by leukospermia, it de

The relationship between histological prostatitis and lower urinary tract symptoms and sexual function

ABSTRACT This prospective analysis assessed the effect of histological prostatitis on lower urinary tract functions and sexual function. The patients were separated into two groups as histologically observed prostatitis (Group A) and no prostatitis (Group B) according to the biopsy outcomes. International prostate symptom score, international index of erectile function-5 scores, maximal and average flow rate, and residual urine volumes were compared statistically between groups. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in baseline age (t=0.64), body mass index value (t=0.51), prostate volume (t=0.87), prostate-specific antigen levels (t=0.43), maximal (t=0.84) and average flow rate (t=0.59), and post-void residual urine volume (t=0.71). Mean international prostate symptom score in patients with prostatitis was numerically but not significantly higher than that in those without prostatitis (t=0.794, P=0.066). Mean international index of erectile function-5 score in the prostatitis group was significantly lower than that in those without prostatitis (t=1.854, P=0.013). Histological prostatitis notably affected sexual function of patients and may serve as a major risk factor for sexual dysfunction while having little effect on lower urinary tract symptoms

Background: The 12-lead electrocardiogram shows a broad range of abnormal patterns in trained athletes. The primary end point of this study was to investigate P wave dispersion, and P wave durations and related factors in different genders applying for registration to the School of Physical Education and Sports. Methods and Results: From 2006 to 2009, a total of 2093 students - 1674 boys with a mean age of 19.8 plus or minus 1.9 years and 419 girls with a mean age of 19.1 plus or minus 1.8 years - were included in the study. All 12 leads of the resting electrocardiogram were evaluated for P wave dispersion and electrocardiogram abnormalities. Baseline parameters such as age, body weight, body height, and body mass index, as well as electrocardiogram findings such as P wave maximal duration and P wave dispersion, were significantly higher in boys than in girls. Of all the parameters tested with correlation analysis, only gender (p = 0.03) (r = 0.04), body weight (p < 0.001) (r = 0.07), body height (p = 0.004) (r = 0.06), and body mass index (p = 0.01) (p = 0.05) were correlated with P wave dispersion. Conclusion: The frequencies of all electrocardiogram abnormalities, P wave dispersion, and P wave maximal duration were higher in boys as compared with girls in an unselected student population applying for registration to the School of Physical Education and Sports; in addition, P wave dispersion was correlated with gender, body weight, body height, and body mass index
