Maximizing the Effectiveness of Peer Interaction in the English-Language Classroom

    Get PDF
The research question addressed in this capstone project is the following: How can teachers maximize the effectiveness of peer-to-peer interactions in an English Language classroom at the secondary or post-secondary level? The paper documents this practitioner’s exploration of the research literature on peer interaction to discover what makes for high quality peer interactions and how various teacher-controlled practices can affect interaction quality. This document also follows the creation of a professional development presentation intended for English-language teachers to help familiarize them with the field’s current understanding of peer interaction and possible best practices in their classrooms. The topics of focus include: sociocultural theory and the interactionist approach, patterns of pair interaction, language-related episodes, the effects of peer familiarity, proficiency level, and linguistic background on dyadic interaction, teacher scaffolding of peer interaction, and the effects of various task types. Included with the project are the literature review of research, professional development presentation, participant workbooks, and a teacher’s guide for the presentation

Inheritance and Financial Health: The Correlation Between Intergenerational Wealth Transfers and Income Levels of Personal Bankruptcies

    Get PDF
This paper describes the correlations between intergenerational wealth transfers, or IWTs, and income of households in bankruptcy as existing research does not address any linkage between the two events. The effect that inheritances, trust payments, and lump sum gifts have on personal finances will impact the millions of Americans who will receive such transfers during the “Great Wealth Transfer” of the coming decades. I use bankruptcy data from the Federal Judicial Center’s Integrated Database, or IDB, and income data from the University of Michigan’s Panel Survey of Income Dynamics, or PSID, to produce a dataset that contains average IWT values of bankrupt households by income level per state, per year, from 2008-2016. Through basic ordinary least squares analysis, I find that inheritance, trust payment, and lump sum receipt do not consistently correlate with income but that the age of the head of the household positively correlates with income. I conclude that further research should be conducted in order to create an empirical model that predicts one’s probability of declaring bankruptcy after receiving an IWT. This research could then be used to inform taxation policy based on the financial health outcomes of the recipient

This paper will explain the result of cetacean reconaissance survey including investigation of abundance and diversity of cetacean related to the designing of a co management Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Berau, East Kalimantan. Berau islands consist of 31 very small islands that have high marine biodiversity including mangrove, coral reefs, sea grass. It has been found by this survey that Berau waters is a corridor for cetacean migration route, beside as home for green turtles and manta ray aggregation sites in Indonesia. This reconaisance survey in the frame oj Rapid Ecological Assessment using visual and acoustic method, indicated that cetacean existence is closely related to the coral reef ecosystem and small islands. Berau islands is an integral part of 'Coral Triangle' within marine mega biodiversity area, and it is inhabited by at least 10 species ofcetacean.Conservation of marine cetacean in the frame work of MPA will ensuresustainable marine resource use, including tourism and fisheries, for the benefit of local communities. The strategies pursuant to this goal will be arrived upon through the linkage of partnerships that have been created, and the objective will be achieved by establishing a large, co-managed Marine Protected Area that will include extractive use zones, non-extractive use zones and fully protected (no-take) zones. Partnership amongstgauernment and NGOs has already been innitiated in Berau. Currently the MPA boundary covers an area of 1.2 million Hectars of Berau waters, including corridor of cetacean migration, that has been formalized through District Decree No.31/2005.Keywords: Marine Protected Area, Rapid Ecological Assessment, Marine Cetacean

Teaching History of Mathematics: A Dialogue

    Get PDF
Many colleges and universities offer a course in the history of mathematics. While the potential benefits for students taking such a course might be apparent, it is often less clear how teaching a history of mathematics course can be a transformational experience for faculty. We present a dialogue between the authors regarding their experiences teaching history of mathematics courses, including their motivation for doing so, the impact these experiences have had on their classroom practices and assessment methods, and the opportunities history of mathematics courses offer for incorporating social justice, equity, and inclusion into the study of mathematics. Our goal is to shine additional light on unexpected ways that teaching the history of mathematics can transform faculty perspectives and practices
