Optical spectroscopy of complex open 4-shell ions Sn-Sn
We analyze the complex level structure of ions with many-valence-electron
open [Kr] 4 sub-shells (=7-4) with ab initio
calculations based on configuration-interaction many-body perturbation theory
(CI+MBPT). Charge-state-resolved optical and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra
of Sn-Sn ions were obtained using an electron beam ion trap.
Semi-empirical spectral fits carried out with the orthogonal parameters
technique and Cowan code calculations lead to 90 identifications of
magnetic-dipole transitions and the determination of 79 energy
ground-configuration levels, questioning some earlier EUV-line assignments. Our
results, the most complete data set available to date for these ground
configurations, confirm the ab initio predictive power of CI+MBPT calculations
for the these complex electronic systems.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Effects of Climate Change on Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases in Europe
Zoonotic tick-borne diseases are an increasing health burden in Europe and there is speculation that this is partly due to climate change affecting vector biology and disease transmission. Data on the vector tick Ixodes ricinus suggest that an extension of its northern and altitude range has been accompanied by an increased prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis. Climate change may also be partly responsible for the change in distribution of Dermacentor reticulatus. Increased winter activity of I. ricinus is probably due to warmer winters and a retrospective study suggests that hotter summers will change the dynamics and pattern of seasonal activity, resulting in the bulk of the tick population becoming active in the latter part of the year. Climate suitability models predict that eight important tick species are likely to establish more northern permanent populations in a climate-warming scenario. However, the complex ecology and epidemiology of such tick-borne diseases as Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis make it difficult to implicate climate change as the main cause of their increasing prevalence. Climate change models are required that take account of the dynamic biological processes involved in vector abundance and pathogen transmission in order to predict future tick-borne disease scenarios
Waveguide integrated superconducting single-photon detectors with high internal quantum efficiency at telecom wavelengths
Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) provide high efficiency for detecting individual photons while keeping dark counts and timing jitter minimal. Besides superior detection performance over a broad optical bandwidth, compatibility with an integrated optical platform is a crucial requirement for applications in emerging quantum photonic technologies. Here we present SNSPDs embedded in nanophotonic integrated circuits which achieve internal quantum efficiencies close to unity at 1550 nm wavelength. This allows for the SNSPDs to be operated at bias currents far below the critical current where unwanted dark count events reach milli-Hz levels while on-chip detection efficiencies above 70% are maintained. The measured dark count rates correspond to noise-equivalent powers in the 10-19 W/Hz-1/2 range and the timing jitter is as low as 35 ps. Our detectors are fully scalable and interface directly with waveguide-based optical platforms
Optimized random phase approximations for arbitrary reference systems: extremum conditions and thermodynamic consistence
The optimized random phase approximation (ORPA) for classical liquids is
re-examined in the framework of the generating functional approach to the
integral equations. We show that the two main variants of the approximation
correspond to the addition of the same correction to two different first order
approximations of the homogeneous liquid free energy. Furthermore, we show that
it is possible to consistently use the ORPA with arbitrary reference systems
described by continuous potentials and that the same approximation is
equivalent to a particular extremum condition for the corresponding generating
functional. Finally, it is possible to enforce the thermodynamic consistence
between the thermal and the virial route to the equation of state by requiring
the global extremum condition on the generating functional.Comment: 8 pages, RevTe
The environmental security debate and its significance for climate change
Policymakers, military strategists and academics all increasingly hail climate change as a security issue. This article revisits the (comparatively) long-standing âenvironmental security debateâ and asks what lessons that earlier debate holds for the push towards making climate change a security issue. Two important claims are made. First, the emerging climate security debate is in many ways a re-run of the earlier dispute. It features many of the same proponents and many of the same disagreements. These disagreements concern, amongst other things, the nature of the threat, the referent object of security and the appropriate policy responses. Second, given its many different interpretations, from an environmentalist perspective, securitisation of the climate is not necessarily a positive development
Structure Factor and Electronic Structure of Compressed Liquid Rubidium
We have applied the quantal hypernetted-chain equations in combination with
the Rosenfeld bridge-functional to calculate the atomic and the electronic
structure of compressed liquid-rubidium under high pressure (0.2, 2.5, 3.9, and
6.1 GPa); the calculated structure factors are in good agreement with
experimental results measured by Tsuji et al. along the melting curve. We found
that the Rb-pseudoatom remains under these high pressures almost unchanged with
respect to the pseudoatom at room pressure; thus, the effective ion-ion
interaction is practically the same for all pressure-values. We observe that
all structure factors calculated for this pressure-variation coincide almost
into a single curve if wavenumbers are scaled in units of the Wigner-Seitz
radius although no corresponding scaling feature is observed in the
effective ion-ion interaction. This scaling property of the structure factors
signifies that the compression in liquid-rubidium is uniform with increasing
pressure; in absolute Q-values this means that the first peak-position ()
of the structure factor increases proportionally to ( being the
specific volume per ion), as was experimentally observed by Tsuji et al.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figure
Investigator and independent review committee exploratory assessment and verification of tumor response in a non-Hodgkin lymphoma study
Interpretation of endpoints (e.g. overall response rate) in clinical trials depends on the accurate and reliable measurement and identification of tumors. Regulatory agencies recommend blinded reviews of imaging data by independent review committees (IRCs). Differences in response outcomes that arise between IRCs and site investigators raise regulatory/sponsor concerns. Here, we evaluate discrepant tumor response assessments by the IRC and unblinded investigators (complete versus partial response, respectively) occurring in 52 (13% of 393 IRC-assessed responders) of 447 enrolled patients with treatment-naĂŻve non-Hodgkin lymphoma from a randomized study. The IRC and investigators were \u27likely correct\u27 in 73% and 25% of cases, respectively (pâ\u3câ.001). Investigators were more likely to make errors by misinterpreting lymph node data and not utilizing PET results. This post hoc finding suggests a possible role for post-training site evaluation/audit, with retraining as needed, and a specialized consensus committee for concurrent blinded review of site/central data
Mid-crustal storage and crystallization of Eyjafjallajokull ankaramites, South Iceland
Our understanding of the long-term intrusive and eruptive behaviour of volcanic systems is hampered by a relatively short period of direct observation. To probe the conditions of crustal magma storage below South Iceland, we have analysed compositions of minerals, mineral zoning patterns, and melt inclusions from two Eyjafjallajokull ankaramites located at Brattaskjol and Hvammsmuli. These two units are rich in compositionally diverse macrocrysts, including the most magnesian olivine (Fo(88)(-)(90)) and clinopyroxene (Mg#(cpx)( )89.8) known from Eyjafjallajokull. Olivine-hosted spinel inclusions have high Cr# (spl )(52-80) and TiO2 (1-3 wt%) and low Al2O3 (8-22 wt%) compared to typical Icelandic chromian spinel. The spinel-olivine oxybarometer implies a moderate oxygen fugacity of Delta logFMQ 0-0.5 at the time of crystallization, and clinopyroxene-liquid thermobarometry crystallization at mid-crustal pressures (1.7-4.2 kbar, 3.0+1.4 kbar on average) at 1120-1195 degrees C. Liquid-only thermometry for melt inclusions with Mg#(melt) 56.1-68.5 and olivine-liquid thermometry for olivine macrocrysts with Fo(80.7-88.9) yield crystallization temperatures of 1155-1222 degrees C and 1136-1213 degrees C, respectively. Diffusion modelling of compositional zonations in the Brattaskjol olivine grains imply that the Brattaskjol macrocusts were mobilized and transported to the surface from their mid-crustal storage within a few weeks (at most in 9-37 days). Trends in clinopyroxene macrocryst compositions and the scarcity of plagioclase indicate that the mid-crustal cotectic assemblage was olivine and clinopyroxene, with plagioclase joining the fractionating mineral assemblage later. In all, the crystal cargoes in the Brattaskjol and Hvammsmtili ankaramites are composed of agitated wehrlitic or plagioclase wehrlitic crystal mushes that crystallized over a large temperature interval at mid-crustal depths.Peer reviewe
Explosive destruction of 26Al
The Îł-ray emission associated with the radioactive decay of 26Al is one of the key pieces of observational evidence indicating stellar nucleosynthesis is an ongoing process in our Galaxy, and it was the ïŹrst such radioactivity to be detected. Despite numerous eïŹorts in stellar modeling, observation, nuclear theory, and nuclear experiment over the past four decades, the precise sites and origin of Galactic 26Al remain elusive. We explore the present experimental knowledge concerning the destruction of 26Al in massive stars. The precise stellar rates of neutron-induced reactions on 26Al, such as (n,p) and (n,α), have among the largest impacts on the total 26Al yield. Meanwhile, reactions involving the short-lived isomeric state of 26Al such as radiative proton capture are highly-uncertain at present. Although we presented on-going experimental work from n TOF at CERN with an 26Al target, the present proceeding focuses only on the 26Al isomeric radioactive beam production aspect and the ïŹrst experimental results at CRIB
