Uganda presently has over 4 million mobile phone subscribers with three service providers and two additional ones laying infrastructure, about to commence operations. The telecom sector has been one of the high growth sectors in the economy quickly becoming the largest contributor of tax to government in the last 4 years.

Effective models of two-flavor QCD: finite μ\mu and mqm_q-dependence

    Get PDF
We study effective models of chiral fields and Polyakov loop expected to describe the dynamics responsible for the phase structure of two-flavor QCD at finite temperature and density. We consider chiral sector described either using linear sigma model or Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and study the phase diagram and determine the location of the critical point as a function of the explicit chiral symmetry breaking (i.e. the bare quark mass mqm_q). We also discuss the possible emergence of the quarkyonic phase in this model.Peer reviewe

Water symbolism in the fiction of Margaret Laurence

    Get PDF
Margaret Laurence makes frequent reference to the element, water, and also uses water-related words in her fiction; often these convey symbolic meanings. This thesis is based on a study of Laurence's five novels: This Side Jordan, The Stone Angel, A Jest of God, The Fire-Dwellers and The Diviners. In these novels fifty water-related words are used a total of over five hundred times. Frequently the symbolism involved in the use of many of these words is directed towards one of several specific functions. The purpose of this thesis is to present an analysis of these functions. Out of the more than twenty possible symbolic functions of water itself and water-related words in the five novels, three functions have been chosen for analysis because of their obvious predominance. Laurence's use of water symbols or water-related symbols to depict the four major periods in man's life is discussed in Chapter I. Chapter II emphasizes her use of this symbolism with regard to the survival and regenerative forces in man's life. In Chapter III Laurence's use of similar symbolism to assist in the creation of characterization is emphasized. All these functions Laurence has incorporated successfully into the weaving of her fiction, making the symbolism intrinsic in the sense that it does not intrude upon the reader; however, the presence of the water symbolism and all the other symbolism in the novels stimulates the reader who either consciously, unconsciously or subconsciously interprets the symbols and so gains a new depth of understanding and appreciation for the writing

An Analysis of the Effect of Employee Recruitment Strategies on Employee Retention at Equity Bank, Kenya

The main goal of strategic recruitment and selection is about finding the best recruitment sources, hiring the best talents and keeping the organisation competitive on the job market and retain its best employees. This process helps to set and achieve the right limits. This study sought to analyze the effect of employee recruitment strategies on employee retention at Equity bank in Kenya. The general objective of this study is to analyse the effect of employee recruitment strategies on employee retention at Equity Bank, Kenya. The study adopted descriptive survey design and the target population consisted of all managers at the head office, and managers at branches (branch manager, operations manager, credit manager, customer service manager, agent manager, and relationship manager) recruited or promoted over 2 years ago, categorized according to the recruitment strategy applied, as tabulated in the sampling frame below. The questionnaire was pre-tested on a pilot respondent who are not part of the study respondents but knowledgeable in the study aspects in order to ensure their validity and relevance.  Secondary data was extracted from annual reports, publications and documentary analysis was used to gather background information by reviewing literatures relevant to the study.   Reviews of the measures used to measure the study variables were also be used to construct the questionnaire to ensure face and construct validity. The data collected was then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to measure the reliability of the scale, which will be used to assess the interval consistency among the research instrument items. Employee recruitment strategies were found by this study to have a positive and significant effect on the employee retention at Equity bank in Kenya. This study was designed to establish the effect of organizational factors on the relationship between workforce diversity management on the performance of public universities in Kenya. The study utilized descriptive correlational survey research design with emphasis on descriptive and analytical designs to put into perspective the effect of organizational factors on the relationship between workforce diversity management and performance of public universities in Kenya. The population of the study constituted all the public universities in Kenya. This being a census study, the data was collected from all registrars in charge of human resource management and administration in all public universities, by use of questionnaires. This study employed the test-retest technique to ascertain the reliability of the data collection instruments. The findings obtained from this study are useful to the following people: Scholars and academicians; can use the findings of this research as a contribution towards the existing knowledge on workforce diversity management related studies. Students and academicians wishing to carry out research in the field of workforce diversity management can use this study and its findings as a source of literature. This study provides policy makers in public Universities and other institutions of higher learning with alternative and appropriate interventions that can be employed for attaining successful workforce diversity management. On overall significance, organizational factors did not have significant moderating effect on the relationship between workforce diversity and university performance in that they had an overall significance value greater than the set p-value ? (Overall significance = 0.057). However, on individual significance, the degree of moderation varies from one organizational factor to another with University act/statutes, University culture and location of the university all had significantly moderate positive effect (rxy.z = 0.269 p-value = 0.024, rxy.z = 0.285 P-value = 0.019 and rxy.z = 0.270 P-value = 0.014) respectively. This implies that the presence of University act/statutes, University culture and location in the correlation model improves the relationship between workforce diversity and universities performance. The study was based on the premise that workforce diversity influence performance but this influence is moderated by a number of organizational factors. The study results supported this premise in that workforce diversity was found to significantly and positively affect performance with forty eight point six percent of the performance being explained by workforce diversity. Key words: Organizational Factors, Diversity Management Strategy and Performanc

Phase diagram and critical properties within an effective model of QCD: the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model coupled to the Polyakov loop

We investigate the phase diagram of the so-called Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and non-zero chemical potential with three quark flavors. Chiral and deconfinement phase transitions are discussed and the relevant order-like parameters are analyzed. The results are compared with simple thermodynamic expectations and lattice data. We present the phase diagram in the (T,μB)T,\,\mu_B) plane, paying special attention to the critical end point: as the strength of the flavor-mixing interaction becomes weaker, the critical end point moves to low temperatures and can even disappear.Comment: 46 pages, 11 figures, 3 table
